There has been a ton of post today with a ton of ideas about what we need to do with our #1 pick and our current quarterback, David Carr. I for one would like some basic information cleared up so we can all have an informed decisions. Some of this information is scattered out throughout this message board, but frankly, there is too much clutter to extract the good information. Please do not speculate! The answers may not be as clear cut as you may think. If you do not KNOW the answers, please don’t post on this thread. Links to supporting data would be nice.

For simplicity sake, I am going to use the Jets as an opposing team in a trade.

Scenario: We exercise the option and pay DC $8 million bonus. Then trade him to Jets for a draft pick and $8 million. What effect does that have on our cap? Are there compensatory picks in our future? What happens to the Jets cap?

Scenario: Same as before except the Texans only get $4 million instead of $8. Same questions.

Scenario: We just don't exercise the option. Let DC become a FA and negotiate for him to stay on 1 more year with a $2 million signing bonus and a $2 million salary. What does this do to the Texans cap?

Scenario: Before the option expires, the Texans trade DC to the Jets for a draft pick. The Jets exercise the option and pay DC $8 million. Again, same questions.

the bonus would accelerate to the traded yr...............meaning this yr...........it make more sense to trade him right now and letting the new team deal with him but there is significant monies still left from his original SB that will also have to amortized..................trading him right now is doable but not likely.............a straight cut makes more sense and truthfully the rest of the NFL knows ot and they would wait until he is cut than give up compensation for an unproven QB.....................

also in scenario one the monies paid back to the Texans from the Jets can not go back into the texans cap number for that yr..............once money is paid it is accounted for............the money thrown into the deal would benefit the owner but not the teams cap number..............there is no cap relief that way.......that is true for scenario one and two regardless of the amounts...................as for letting him walk it makes the most sense if the FO really thinks he is not the "guy"......................the NFL has a hard cap unlike the NBA there is no financial wiggle room...................and that is even true in death or disabilty.............anything paid to a player will be accounted for.....................that is why teams carry dead cap.................like my Titans..............we had 33 million in dead cap dollars this yr........................
