I keep reading this same tired old line from many of you that . . . Capers was fired because he lost the respect of the players.

Um . . excuse me but nothing could be further from the truth. He had the utmost respect of the players every season he's been here. And they admired him this season for staying calm and level-headed despite the circumstances, and that's why they continued to play hard for him.

He got fired because they didn't win. Period.

I agree Marcus, lack of respect was the only thing I didn't hear from the players. If anything, they gained more respect for him for his toughness through this season (see David Carr's quote in this morning Chronicle).

Totally agree. I am pretty amazed how this team remained committed to Capers even after it became apparent he would be gone after the season was over. That certainly says alot about Caper's character and also how mature most members of the team are.

They have never lost respect for him as a person, but as a coach he lost them last season when it started to become apparant that his system (playing not to lose, keeping the score close) would not produce results. Go back and read the quotes from Sharper and Walker last year when the slide started.

I don't think that Capers ever lost the team respect-wise, but it's clear to me that the players lost confidence in his system.

(what's scary is I hit reply after reading the first post and didn't see Wonger's post until after I posted mine)

I have no clue though how McNair expects people to respect any decision Charlie will make. I think McNair even has some confidence issues after this decision.

I guess some of you wouldn't know respect, or how to be respectful, if it was fed to you through a straw. But you got the being pathetic bit down cold.:thumbdown :loser

So Marcus, if Sharper and Walker's statements were not directed at the coaching staff, who were they intended for?

Everyone thinks Capers was a first-class guy and has a lot of respect for him as a person... he just wasn't a good coach for this team. Let's not forget that he played a big part in turning this team into the NFL's worst.

Do you know how easy it is to say that you respect a guy after he just got fired for the 5th time (i don't know how many, but its been a lot). Around week 10, Carr said he'd like Capers to stay and liked playing for him. He wasn't telling the truth, he was being sportsmanlike and a good politician. A player can't go out and say that they never respected their coach, etc, or they get labeled a T.O. headcase. The team DID NOT respect Capers this season. He was like their pushover father, who they could have choose to listen to or not. We need someone who is going to make the players ACCOUNTABLE. That is the only way to gain their respect. Capers has always been a LOSER. He will be forever cursed with a losing record. We need someone with a WINNING mindset

    -----------------------

This coming from the guy who in another thread said I needed to have my *** kicked. :challenge

You need anger management classes, bro.

Capers doesn't need you to defend him, OK?

You and SheTexan running around this board berating everyone for being "disrespectful" as if you are the message board parents is getting very sad and very t-i-r-e-d. And I wouldn't have to do this publicly if the board mods would respond to my "alert" on Marcus' call for violence against me. I guess the board rules are open to interpretation.

The sappy, fake tears for a HC who should have had the DIGNITY to dismiss himself about four games into the season is so frustrating.

Now, back to the TOPIC of this thread:

Capers was coddled by the players. They had respect enough to not throw him overboard, and THAT'S what should be celebrated. But if you think they respected him out of his achievements, you're wrong.

And last time I checked, the SB is won by winning and not by having a good 'ole grandfatherly HC who hands out lollipops after the game.

Nice guy. But a bad HC for this team and its personnel.

And for some of you who are mourning Capers and berating anybody who dares to critique him during this time of national mourning and reflection....

    Think about this:

Where are your tears for the players Casserly drafted and/or acquired who got plugged into Capers' poor 3-4 and even worse offensive style?

That's FOUR years of wasted time for NFL players who already have a small window to begin with.

So boo-hoo-hoo. Cry me a river for poor 'ole Dom The Valiant.

It was his ship, and we went down with it. Quit using it as a way to exalt yourself as some all-feeling and all-respectful person while you try to humiliate us for being glad that a new HC is on his way into the organization.

Again, it's apparent that you don't know what 'respect' means. You can fault Capers philosophy and his schemes all you want in other threads.

Players, including Sharper, may have grumbled about the staff's gameplans, schemes, or whatever. How could they not if the team is losing, and they want to win? Sure they are going to ***** and complain.

But up until the last minute of the last game of the season, they continued to play hard, and tried to win the game. None of the players mailed it in. And that was in response to how Capers kept his cool, and didn't fly off the handle, and go into some knee-jerk tirade like some fans did. Yeah, he didn't win, and that's why he was fired. That's the way it works in the NFL.

But this idea that they didn't win because Capers lost the respect of the players is total ignorant BS.

Dude... you just don't get it. No one has said that they don't respect Capers as a person. He's a fine, upstanding person and everyone recognizes this. What we (and the current player's are starting to say now that he's gone) are saying is that they lost respect for him as a coach/game planner/strategist.
