1-10-IND 27 (10:07) D.Rhodes up the middle to IND 30 for 3 yards (S.Considine). PENALTY on PHI-M.Patterson, Defensive Holding, 5 yards, enforced at IND 30.

How can you have a holdlng penalty on a running play on the defense?

The Texans had two or three of those last year - on Payne I think. The calls got the conspiracy theorists' attention - for such a rare call we sure saw it a lot.

I may be mistaken, but Payne was called for those against the Colts too.

The Saints last year lost a game on a defensive holding call ... on a FIELD GOAL. The Falcons got to move up 10 yards and kick it again (they missed it originally) and they made it, won the game.

One of the most ridiculous calls I've ever seen

He probably held one of the blockers so they couldn't go off and get another guy blocked.

    Yup.

Defensive holding is when a defender (usually a DT) grabs an OL and holds him to open up a gap for a LB.

It is a rare call but as defenses get better we will see more of these flags in the NFL. They hate defensive games & will pretty much make any rule that helps offenses get more points on the board.
