I cant believe what happend today, this is horrible, just horrible for a player to die like that in a sport. I cant believe this. Rest In Peace Al Lucas. This is the worst day ever in afl history. God Bless Al Lucas and his family.

Wow! thats horrible news. Im not an afl fan but i am a football fan and really feel bad for him and his family. Hopefully some day some form of protection can be made to prevent spinal cord injuries.

How did it happen? Did he spear some one or did he fall the wrong way?

He was going for a tackle on a kickoff return and the ball carrier ran straight into the top of Lucas' head...They showed it on Sportscenter earlier, which was in bad taste IMO...

How sad. I didn't see it and don't really want to but you just know they'll be showing it on ESPN as somebody else said.

Well he died doing what he loved to do...but what a sad story.

I believe this is the first death of a player during a game. The details of what happened are very sad.

I believe so in Arena football yes. But there was a player years ago in Detroit that died on the field...we discussed it on a long ago thread. I believe he had a heart attack. Somebody knew his name and posted it; I think he was a wide receiver.

Yeah, ESPN showed what happened on the same day. Showed the hit, then him on the stretcher. Then when the guy said "He was 26", I realized he died. I couldn't believe it. Condolences to the family of Lucas.

Best wishes and prayers to the Lucas family. At a time like this it shows just how fragile we all our and where our priorities should be. Lucas was known both as a good football player and a great person, the latter shall be forever remembered. Rest in peace Mr. Lucas
