Good for a mid-week laugh (from PFT):

Though that whole “reduced visibility” thing has given Emmitt Smith fewer opportunities to make high-profile verbal blunders, Emmitt will from time to time remind us of the moments of pure unintended gold came from his first year at ESPN.

On Monday night, Emmitt coined his latest new term — “rites of patches” — when discussing Pats quarterback Matt Cassel.

Complicating matters is that Emmitt wasn’t really using the term properly, even if he’d said “rites of passage.”

In fact, we seem to recall a misuse of that term by Emmitt last year. But the specific are lost in the background of more memorable miscues, including “blowed out” and “debacled.”

I have to say, I really, really miss Emmitt. What is that - like only two or three blunders from this season? This time last year, we were up over 25.

"Rites of Patches" is good. I love that one.

i think secretly emmit smith has a doctorate in linguistics, and he spends hours every night devising these 'blunders' in order to get laughs.

    the joke's on us.

EMMITT’S NEW WORD OF THE WEEK

Posted by Mike Florio on December 9, 2008, 12:49 a.m.

After Monday night’s victory by the Panthers over the Buccaneers, ESPN’s Emmitt Smith attempted to explain the subpar performance of the Tampa defense.

    Emmitt called it an “amorition.”

We think he meant to say, “aberration.”

Either way, his verbal flub wasn’t an amorition.

After the Texans game last week he said a couple of things that were Master of the Obvious good and perfect for Emmitt. Something like Stanton is going to be a good back because of his legs and Andre being a top receiver because he can run while catching...I forgot the quoted but I laughed when seeing them live.

it's always a letdown when he talks for 10 seconds and nothing unusual comes out of his mouth

I disagree. The chance that he "debacles" a sentence on national TV is the one reason I tune in.
