In 2011, Wade's first season as Defensive coordinator, we had the #2 defense in the league (4th in points allowed). Jj Watt, Brooks Reed, Kareem Jackson, Danieal Manning, Johnathan Joseph, & Brian Cushing were all starters on that defense.

They're all returning as starters. Leaving 5 holes to deal with.

Considering the offenses we'll be facing average 18th in the league, Philly (2) & Cincinnati (10) are the only offenses that were in the top 10 from 2013, do you think it's possible we could have a top 10 defense in 2014?

Keep in mind, Wade took over the 30th ranked Ole' defense (29th in points allowed). Romeo Crennel is taking over the 7th overall defense (24th in points allowed).

I think it's entirely possible, especially if we go more defense than offense in the draft.

For the sake of argument, plug in Clowney, another 'above average' pass rush specialist/rotational guy and the rest of the holes with average players. So long as the line gets to the QB consistently, I don't think you need to have the best secondary.

Actually, some may say I'm cautiously optimistic about the defense. I'm convinced this team threw in the towel after Kubes had his stroke.

If you were to draft Clowney/add a NT like Ellis and a competent nickel CB then I could see a top 10 defense.

The front seven concerns me. We've got to re-tool to a different philosophy pretty quickly. We need a couple of big NTs, a couple of DEs, and I have no idea what we're going to do with our linebackers.

I'm hoping our defense can be average.

The front seven concerns me too, but with Watt and Clowney on the line, I think the other five guys don't have to be all-pros.

it's definitely possible to make the jump back to the top, assuming health of course. to do so, my opinion is we need to get better up the middle. a nose tackle, 2 linebackers and improved safety play either from manning and swearinger or by adding another player.

I think we end up around the middle, somewhere between 14-18. Top 10 is possible but a stretch. The reason we adapted so well to Wade's defense is because it suited most of our personnel at the time. This switch does not. We have significant holes in the front seven.

That's why I put in the bit about the offenses we're going to be facing. I think an average defense with the opponents we'll be facing can "look like" a top 10 defense.

I'm with these guys. I cannot predict where we'll be until I see how we fill the holes TK already identified and how well the remaining starters adapt to the new scheme. Then there's the issue of backups. We need quality guys to rotate in to give the starters some rest.

    Ask me again after OTAs.

    Top 10 defense.

    If we can stay healthy.

I really think the overall coaching on this team was not good.

I would rather see a top 10 scoring defense than a top 10 YPG defense. I have very little hope for that in 2014.

A bigger reason for the 2-14 season than the QB is the lack of turnovers by the defense. That has to change. We were much better two years ago, so this group has it in them. They just have to perform.

Lets go sign Robert Ayers, Pat Angerer, Shaun Philips and Carlos Rogers to fill our needs and grab a qb in 1 with a big nt in 2 and sit back and watch us wreck havoc.

Well it looks like they just filled half of that order with the signing of the 6'2" 330 lb. Powe from the Chiefs. Not sure if they will start him but he's at least depth at the NT position. He's still young (27 yrs) and looks to have some upside. My guess is they draft another NT like DaQuan Jones, Ellis, or McCullers in the mid rounds, and then let the Rookie battle it out in camp with Powe for the starting position. Still got a lot more holes to fill!

I see the two going hand-in-hand. Create more turnovers, allow fewer points. :splits:
