The Texans will have $24.8 million.

In this piece about salary cap room, John Clayton shares some detail that’s quite positive for the AFC South.

Clayton addresses the remaining cap room in 2012, but even more interesting are the numbers for next year.

Contracts for their remaining 2012 unsigned draft picks will still factor into these numbers.

And some of the money will have to be spent on retaining in-house free-agents-to-be -- a list that includes Connor Barwin and Duane Brown in Houston, Austin Collie and Jerraud Powers in Indianapolis, Terrance Knighton and Derek Cox in Jacksonville, and Jason McCourty and Jared Cook in Tennessee.

Even with those pending free agents, Clayton’s salary-cap list for 2013 is filled with good news for the AFC South.

The Colts have the most room of anyone in the league with $43 million.
The Jaguars, minus Aaron Kampman, move up to $25 million, Clayton tells me.
The Texans will have $24.8 million.
The Titans should be at $16 million.

After the 2012 season, we should see our four teams in position to re-sign the guys they want and be able to do some shopping in the outside market -- especially the Colts, who will be in position to make the sort of additions that weren’t part of the operation during the Bill Polian regime and Peyton Manning era.

Reading the article, gives us 5th most cap room in 2013.

We're gonna need just as much in 2014 as well to re-sign Cushing and Antonio Smith, although i wouldn't be surprised if we let Smith walk if his price tag is too high.

That's pretty good, no? I expect Barwin will garner about 6mil/per and Brown about 10mil/per. Is this even close?

Try about the same for Barwin if he continues to produce. Most OLB's in a 34 defense with Barwin's numbers are signing for around 9-10 mil.

Hopefully Crick and develop and stay healthy behind him and eventually take his place.

We might be re-signing a lot of players that year...

Almost definite re-signs: Schaub, Brown, Barwin

?: Butler, Casey, Caldwell, Cody, McCain, Quin all unrestricted according to that link

Doesn't seem like there's going to be much room for shopping

Glover Quin and Brice McCain are really the only two I see on the bottom list that are must re-signs, and they can be had for reasonable amounts IMO. The rest depend on how they perform this season and we should get a good look at all of them.

We (and even the Texans) can ponder the 2013 cap. But it's too early at this time to accurately foresee how it plays out. Too many questions to play out. Between now and then, how many injuries, how many successful or unsuccessful rehabs, how many players don't work out, and how many other unknowns? Looks decent now, but the real numbers won't be known until after the end of the season. And don't forget the salary escalations in the existing big buck player contracts.

Here is an interesting presentation of facts I came across that may affect the decisions made involving the 2013 salary cap situation:

Ewww...... those QBs couldn't do much with the likes of Forte & RunDMC.... pretty stout defenses to boot.

Totally disagree with his conclusion. We still need a top 10'ish QB. And we better find a replacement for Andre -- not an easy task.

I would like to see how accurate Clayton was in discussing 2011 salary cap. If someone could research what he postulated before last off season and to how Texans eventually spent moneyI'd feel better. I am really hopeful that backups like Fig Newton (Butler) Brooks (Wade Smith), Crick (A. Smith) Yates (Schaub), Mercilus (Barwin) can start and save us cap dollars.

You have become draft deranged as in want to dump people to find more stuff to talk about during the draft season. Butler is just getting his chance at starting. Barwin just had his first good season and you're looking to replace them already. Antonio is playing excellent football. You can hope all you want on Yates and I hope he progresses as well but so far the drop off to him from Schaub is huge and wishing he would get in for money is ridiculous. He isn't going to become starter and play out his rookie contract. Save us cap dollars to what end? To not re-sign others of our starters? Sure there is a limit on what the team should pay any player and we might get out bid but you don't go around willy nilly casting off key starters.

This is where the 20%/70%/10% split comes in.
20% core players - those we must keep because the offense/defense goes thru them or there's way too much of a drop-off in production if we lose them.
70% starter guys - key players but their backups are pretty good.
10% revolving door guys. We're constantly looking to upgrade these folks anyway.

I posted my 20 percenter list in badboy's thread... What's yours?

I'll call that 10.5 players. In no particular order:

    Schaub
    Brown
    Foster
    AJ
    Watt
    JJo
    Barwin
    Reed
    Cushing
    Myers/Antonio - both key contributors at 30.
