After watching this game its obvious that Mendenhall would have helped us more than Brown did. That may change in a few years, but forgive me if I don't have too much faith in any of the Texans long term plans.

I dont think Brown was injured on the attempted fumble recovery .... No one made contact with him as the ball squirted away from him , I think he was just upset with himself and kinda laid there thinking about the play and probably his preformace on both parts of the play .... Letting his man get to Schaubs blind side and failing to recover the fumble. They showed another shot of him a short while later obviously frustrated ....
Brown's gonna be alright , thats a hell of a defense to throw at a rookie .Welcome to the NFL rooike was more like welcome to your worst nightmare. He had some good moments and some bad. I expect him to improve week by week , game by game.

Only because that is who you wanted drafted. Did you watch mendenfumble in the preseason? I swear you are not a Texan fan but a fan of I want to be right at the cost of anything and everything. It is almost as if you cheer for failure so your chosen guy will be right. Brown had a bad game but had a good preseason and learning LT is not the easiest position to come in and dominate. How is that D'brick pick everyone was wanting looking? More like a 5th rounder to me.

Brown did some good things early on, but as the Steelers increased the lead, and as we gave them no run game to respect, they were able to pin their ears back even more. On balance, he played like a rookie, but I think he has a bright future.
He should be forced to sit in film session for hours, though, just watching two plays - his attempted fumble recovery and Matt Turk's attempted recovery from last season.

I honestly think he did pretty damn good for a rookie and against a pretty damn good defense too. I was also kinda of proud that he got upset with himself for not doing better. When you see someone get upset over that then you know they have heart. This guy has a bright future if he can continue to get better.

Mendenhall had 28 yds on 10 carries behind the Steelers' line. So how do you think he would have been better behind ours???

I agree. He certainly had some big mistakes in this game, and he got beat badly quite a few times. However, he did have some plays where he looked good. There's not many guys that you can say had a good game out there, and none of the other starters had an excuse of being rookies. He'll steadily improve week in and week out. I think he's going to learn a lot from this game assuming he can get over the bruised ego he suffered.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not but I am sure the poster you quoted was being facetious.
F-ing hell. I can't stand the fact that he wins in spite of his defense. It's almost the perfect storm. "I'll play mediocre and we'll win....end of story!"....I think it's getting old and the other shoe WILL drop.

Who among us DIDN'T expect Duane Brown to struggle in this game? He was going up against an ELITE pass-rusher in James Harrison... in one of the toughest, most hostile environments possible, on opening day, against a 3-4 defense, which the Texans have a lot more trouble against.... plus - it's not like anyone else on the O-line had a great day either.
He's just a rookie. This was going to happen. I didn't expect him to have THAT bad of a game, but hey - that's what went down. As someone stated before, LT is a very difficult position to learn at the NFL level - and Pittsburgh might literally might be the WORST matchup for the Texans defensively. I'll rewatch again, but I thought just as much pressure came from the middle and the right side as did the left. Maybe a review will show more, but that was my initial gametime opinion.

Did you even watch the game? Based on that comment apparently not. What did Mendenhall do yesterday that made him stand out? Nothing. 2.8 yards per carry would not even get you a first down on 3 carries on average. You call yourself a Texans fan but I call BS when you ridicule and demean everything they do. Not once have you ever stood up for this team. You defend your star QB more than you defend the team you call yourself a fan of.
Brown did decent in my book considering the defense he went up against. He needs some work though.

I agree. Unless Harrison and Woodley are shut out the rest of the year, I don't think we can point the finger at Brown. Those guys get paid to go after the QB, and those guys are pretty good at it.
Give him a coupld of years, and I think the whole league will be talking about Brown, I think he looked good most of the game.
I also liked Myers, I think we've finally got us a starting Center.
I think Briesel needs to be selling used tires somewhere though.

I am 10 times the fan that you are Spec. I am not a brainless homer sheeple like you. For that I give thanks. Ive been here since the beginning.
When I am at the game sitting in the seats that I own and have owned since Day One and you are watching the game with your boyfriend from some Austin bath house, keep telling yourself that I am not a fan of the Texans and that you are so much greater. Maybe I am not a homering member of the sheeple but I care about my team and want the best. It is quite obvious that Kubiak and his coaching staff are not the best available. Is that even up for debate any more? If wanting to upgrade our coaching (the only thing you can upgrade without much worry) makes me a bad fan, so be it. Kubiak is a flatliner, does not prepare his team and get them motivated or fired up, and is a horrible game planner. His fellow coaches on the staff are just as bad especially Richard Smith. Even Sir Lancelot himself, Gibbs, was totally worked over yesterday. But I guess me pointing out that our team played and coached pathetically yesterday makes me a bad fan....like I care what a fan like you thinks....

Agreed! Hampton was throwing Myers around like a rag doll. Then again, our entire Oline was overwhelmed more times than not.

I hate penalties but I wished Duane would have just taken down, tripped, or takled the defender on the the fumble play, then it's minus 10 yards instead of watching your QB get smashed by two defenders and looking silly on an attemt to recover a fumble resulting in a turnover - hindsight is 20/20.
Briesel couldn't get his hands on the guy in front of him, on two of the Schaub sacks.
I know I don't know who was whose responsibility and all that, but I think it was pretty obvious. He put his hands up, and turned his head to watch the man in front of him run around him.
If you'd noticed, they were ZBS the heck out of us.

If you're such a great fan, why do I skip over your posts to read something more logic based when it comes to the negative portions of the team. Get over yourself, you're a VY mark, and you pretty much have a problem with every thing that the team does. I honestly don't know if you're a Titans troll in disguise, and that's just plain sad. So no, you aren't the fan that Spec is.
Moving on to Duane Brown, I thought he was pretty overwhelmed facing James Harrison more often than not, but he wasn't the only one on the line. Even the hometown favorite Eric Winston gave up a sack on what looked like a lazy ass block that he just gave up on. Meyers got tossed around vs Hampton, and I think that'll be something that happens fairy often when we have to face a team with a huge NT (Jaguars, Titans immediately come to mind). About the only player on the offensive line that didn't completely stink the joint up was probably Chester Pitts, and then I guess Eric Winston behind him. It's tough to say.
But Brown's play did leave a lot to be desired, but for a rook in his first start, I wasn't expecting sunshine and kittens.

Harrison and Hampton are two of the best players in their positions in the NFl, many more LT and C are going to get schooled by those guys this year. When Myers and Brown have more experience behind them I will expect a better performance but luckily we won't have to play that level of talent for the next 15 games.
As for Chester Pitts, he has to be the most under appreciated guy on the roster, the one consistent adequacy in a pool of mediocrity.

Albert Haynesworth and John Henderson are also two of the best players at their position in the NFL, which is defensive tackle. I'm not saying that they are AS good as Hampton, but they are Pro-Bowlers (legitimate probowlers at that). That means that Chris Meyers is probably going to have to face guys who are dominant at their position a lot this season, and I'm not even looking into playing the Browns (Shaun Rogers), Vikings (Pat/Kevin Williams), and others. That's at least 5 games where he's going to face competition that is as good as, better than, or almost as good as Casey Hampton. I worry about him because he doesn't seem to have the technique down yet, for dealing with guys who outweigh you by about 50 pounds, and have about a half a foot on you. I'm not trying to dog the guy, because I know this will be only his second season starting, but I worry that he'll struggle with these kinds of players all year.
For Brown, he's going to have to face Dwight Freeney twice, Kyle Vanden Bosch (Whom I think is a tad overrated and really didn't do anything with his career until he was next to Haynesworth) twice, and luckily the Jags DE's look to not be as good as advertised. After that, it'll be Jared Allen once, Kamerion Wimbley once, Aaron Kampmann once, and so on. For some reason, I'm not as worried about him, as he appears to get it somewhat, and he just played his first game. He's got the work ethic, and he has the attitude of wanting to win so he's got that going for him. But his rookie schedule is just a nightmare.
Again, I don't want to discount what either Harrison or Hampton did, but we're facing guys like this all year long.
EDIT: And Chester Pitts is so good because he's dependable, but he's definitely not going to be mistaken for Alan Faneca, or Steve Hutchinson any time soon.
