We lost this game as soon as it was scheduled, so I wasn't upset about it. Losing the 4th down call was not a big deal. We were soundly outplayed all day.

Here's the good news:

The Ravens look very beatable. They weren't running away with their game like they should have.

Did you catch some Jaguars and Titans football today? They BOTH are very very beatable. Heck, it looked like neither team wanted to win the game. Vince is already majorly hurt and appears to be in his "I think I might not want to play football" depression-mode again.

Miami and Detroit are beatable, and we have them at home IIRC.

Colts represent the only real threat similar to the Steelers today.

Even with the way we played today, I personally think we can OUTPLAY Ravens, Jaguars, Titans, Dolphins, and Lions.

That means we might be looking at 5-2 by our bye week. We aren't going to beat teams like the Colts or Steelers (unless they just fail to really prepare for us) and we need to just get over that fact...but we can beat the other teams, and I am not going to have a coronary over losing to a VERY good Steelers team who looks to have returned to their form from a few years back.

We were the unfortunate victim of having to play the Steelers on opening day in THEIR home. Had we played the Cardinals, the Rams, the Lions, the Dolphins, and a whole host of other teams who (today) looked very subpar...I am sure we'd be happy campers today.

miami battled the jets fairly well today......Pennington isn't a great QB, but he's not a push over either. the ravens D is solid, and cause havoc. Detroit is beatable, but they still have a lot of offensive fire power to cause problems....and the Colts, well they're the colts.....................I think the texans offense will play better, but I'm still worried about that D.....
 
I'm just ready for SWT to eat his hat... even if we go 0-7 I'll be excited to see SWT eat his hat.
 
Think you're spot on. We might not be 5-2 by the bye-week, but it's not impossible based on the other teams performances. Everyone will have a hard time doing anything against this Steelers defense, and I doubt that any teams will get alot of points against them this year.

Someone else mentioned in another thread, that if one could have written the manuscript for the worst possible game, it would have been our season opener. Short of injuries, everything that could go wrong did go wrong at some point during the game. My own positive spin on this is that it can only get better, and that if we increase the percentage of good plays and calls (and we had a few tonight) we'll be at least respectable this season.

Regardless, I am glad to have the NFL back, and despite taking a beating tonight I'm still loving the game and I'm still a Texans fan :)

I look at who we played today, and then I flip over and watch some of the other teams we're facing in the next few weeks. We played an opponent today who is light-years ahead of the teams we're facing in the next few weeks.

In fact, the team we faced today looks like the Colts team we almost always have lost to: Great blockers, good running game, cold-blooded killer at QB, and awesome defense.

The Colts and the Steelers are playoff teams. And the others I watched today are not scaring me one bit.

Was better for us to get our rears kicked today, even if we feel humiliated by it. I usually get very very angry over a day like this, but it was a blessing that it came on the first day, especially blessed that it was on the road. Think about how this would have felt for our guys if we had lost like this at Reliant today.

I'll leave the attention starved folks to themselves.

GP, I like your optimism, but I was flicking back and forth to the titans-jags game during commercials, and I saw two very good defenses, both of which will give us fits. If someone doesn't step up and stop Haynesworth against us, he's gonna injure Schaub again.

Our offense will get it going, but 5-2 is still optimistic IMO.
 
I agree with both your post GP. We played terrible but it's not like it was the Atlanta Falcons game from last year. At least this game was against one of the best teams in the NFL. I like starting the year out on the road and against a tough opponent, it will make us a stronger team.
 
5-2 before the bye? I'm just hoping for 3-4. We aren't there yet folks. We are up and coming, but we aren't there yet. Week one is over, let's see what happens next Sunday.

You're right about the Jags and Titans defenses.

But they look to have taken a few steps back offensively. There's not a single WR on the Jags who can touch ours in terms of talent, and I am serious when I say that this might be the beginning of the end for Vince Young in Tennessee.

If we can stiffen our run defense vs. the Ravens and get some confidence...I think Schaub and Green/Slaton can lead us over the remaining teams, excluding the Colts.

LOL. When Leftwich came into the game, I was like "Whew! Now we can stop them. This is a gift from the gods."

Hey, anybody here who was hanging their hat on upsetting the Steelers is due for a CAT-scan ASAP. People should have dialed down their expectations. Too many people were so starved for Texans football that they forgot to check the schedule closely to see who we faced today.

I hated our opening day game from the very beginning of it being released on the scheduling. It had the same "feel" to it as the game in Buffalo a few years back. Traveling to the northeast for your very first game is rough.

We are hosting a Ravens team who has a rookie QB, and he is the starter because the other QBs are banged up. We're at home. And I bank on our guys being very very ready to prove something.

1-1 by this time next week.

You're completely missing the point: the Texans were never in the game,
they were complely blown out, the 21-point margin totally understates the
dominance of the Texans by the Steelers today.
Forget about wanting to win the game, bottom line is the Texans weren't competitive today, and this is a team that Kubiak says will settle for nothing less than the playoffs this season.
 
Because of this thread we will now be 2-5 at the bye.........that's just the way Texan fandom goes, if you can't take a kick in the nuts repeatedly, being a Texan fan is not for you.
 
I thought we would be 1-3 after Sept, but after we got smashed today next week scares the shite out of me. I hope we can make some adjustments in protection or it will get uglier.

Did most of you guys miss the part where Tennessee had 7 sacks today? Tha Jags had less than 50 yards rushing. Why do I keep hearing that thier D looks beatable?
 
Hmmm...anything is possible.

This team just needs to take it a week at a time. The team needs to focus on fixing the mistakes from this week and the only goal should be being 1-1 next week.

I don't think there was a single Texans player or coach today who really, truly 100% can say that they HONESTLY felt they had a shot today.

It's one thing to SAY confident things. It's whole 'nother thing to do it. Kubiak is a master of coach-speak, so anything he says is automatically ignored if you understand that he's just really good at coach-speak.

At the end of today, if a Texans fan is sad about what happened today, then he hasn't learnt much from this franchises' first season and all the way through to what we have today: We can't normally beat teams like the Steelers, and we ought to stop the pipe dreams of doing so.

We're a long ways from being truly competitive. Rick Smith admits it: He has a guarded optimism that I like a lot. He knows he can put together a team who is like the Steelers, but it is going to take a long time. Then, we'll be like the Steelers: Just fine-tuning things each year, but with the same core of studs to help solidify the team.

What? Why the hell not? Have you ever played any sports?? I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous.

I'm sure the Texans as a whole knew they were underdogs. I'm sure they knew it was going to be super tough to win this one. But damn. You're saying they KNEW in their hearts that they had NO CHANCE?? That's not the way pro athletes think. As they say, ''The games aren't played on paper."

Texans were decent last year. Pittsburgh was above average, but not elite. This wasn't 1-15 Miami playing 16-0 New England.

Steelers were decimated by oline injuries last year, and their star running back broke his leg. They were hardly the same team last year that they are PERENNIALLY. They're back.

I don't question their effort vs. Steelers today, but you could see a difference from our first possession to the next one...and each time we got scored on, the worse it got. YOU are delirious if you think our guys went into the Heinz Field locker room this morning and just knew that they were going to win.

You're not being a puss to have a bit of yourself grounded in reality, by the way.

All the pep rallies, impassioned locker room speeches by coaches, and self-confidence in the world is not worth a lick versus teams like the Steelers. They are on a whole different level. If you get timely turnovers from them, if they screw up and cannot capitalize on possessions, and if we have a few breaks from the refs...we might win that one. But, uh, none of those things happened. Life is not a "Rudy" movie, guys.

It has to be a perfect storm for a team like us to beat a team like that. But I guess I don't know anything about sports or anything. Quit acting like I'm stupid. I've probably been one of the most level-headed people on here, what with all the bodies falling off roof tops and bridges lately.

I'll grant you the Bengals aren't the world's greatest team, but the Ravens had a rookie QB who ran for a touchdown - maybe I should say lumbered...running was pushing it. They played fairly well - certainly better than we did. If our defense doesn't do some serious improvement, Rookie Flacco will be lumbering against us also.

Now Jacksonville didn't look all that great - maybe not much better than we looked.

The Titans - even without Vince - should his leg be an injury that causes him to miss a few games and they might be better without him - still have a pretty fine defense and we have no discernible offensive line or running game or a QB who can keep his head when all is falling apart around him.

While I expected us to lose, I didn't expect us to look worse than we have in over a year while doing it. We looked unprepared to play, uninspired, untalented, and rather lost. I find the whole thing worrisome and I hope the players are humiliated enough to get angry enough to play like overachievers on steroids.

I fully expect our running game to find its legs vs. Ravens.

And here's why: Ahman Green, against my own predictions, has stayed healthy for an entire game. He might actually be OK now.

Slaton was breaking tackles, never giving up, and I think he's going to be fantastic very soon.

Flacco's run was a fluke. He is not a threat, IMO. And the Bengals? They are awful.

You guys are scared of Titans and Jags because of last year, but I think it's a different year this year.

Maybe I'm crazy. Maybe I'm not.

What?!? Let me help you out buddy - You're crazy! The defensive front we're going to face next week is just as good, if not better, than the one we just faced today. Plus, add in Uncle Ray Ray and Cousin Ed. And I watched some of the Titans and Jags game today. Yes, it's a different year. But, they still have the same defenses. Both defenses looked damn good today.

If we can get DISMANTLED by a team during the year, we aren't good enough to survive in the playoffs.

If you aren't good enough to win the Lombardi trophy, why do you even play the game?

But there was no EXPLOSIVE offense from the Ravens, Titans, and Jags. It was good defenses vs. good defenses. Our offense is capable of hanging with those teams, IMO. Our defense got smacked in the mouth repeatedly by a great offense today, and just couldn't recover from the trauma.

We faced a team, today, who had BOTH aspects firing on all cylinders. Thus, today's loss is magnified.

Look, I had watched the first half of the Cowboys and Browns today...and I will say that as good as the Cowboys were looking, they wouldn't hang with today's Steelers. Romo would look just as silly as Schaub did.

You know what? You really have two choices here: (1) Piss and moan and cry about it, or (2) Choose to isolate today's game and look at the schedule and realize that we aren't facing offensive juggernauts except the Colts.

I choose to live in the happy place, and I don't think it's too bizarre of a place to live. And this is coming from someone who tends to be the most negative guy on these boards when stuff like this happens.

Once again, here's reality: We're not "there" yet.

You can crap in one hand and wish in the other, and see which one fills up first. We need lots of drafts, better free agency acquisitions, and time.

good post and i too got to admit that the titans D was really impressive, they shut down both maurice and taylor, haynesworth was a beast out there

Carson Palmer hasn't been right since the injury.

Chad has a new name, and isn't into playing on a t-e-a-m.

They don't have a running back.

The locker room atmosphere is in shambles there.

We'll handle the Ravens in our house. We're good enough on this one.

I have us going 5-2 into the bye week too... in the prediction thread I had us winning against everyone, besides the Jags. Yes I have us beating the Colts, I'm not feeling them this year.

I think I might have to downgrade my prediction to 4-3 though, after seeing our performances this year. But I think we're going to go into bye week clicking and in rhythm, especially the ZBS and run game.

I'm not saying that our guys went in KNOWING that they would win. You said that our guys KNEW that they had NO CHANCE, and I don't believe that's true. I don't think guys go in thinking, "Well, we're losing this one for sure." Especially on opening day, when everyone is full of optimism and hope.

I just don't think that pro athletes approach a game with that attitude, and that was the point of my post. I'm not insulting you as a person (or poster). I just wholeheartedly disagree that our guys believed that there was no way they could win. Maybe I'm am overanalyzing your post, but I'm taking it as the Texans were 100% certain that there was 0% chance of winning.

But I do agree with you that we will destroy Baltimore next week!

yeah, the Steelers play like a decent NFL team. I like to think I'm grounded in reality myself since I pretty much figured a Steeler win today but I didn't expect the Texans to play like an expansion team.

Yep, that was pretty much my thinking also....I went into the game expecting a loss (and I was already prepared for that, so it wouldn't have been upsetting to see the team lose), but to watch Houston get dominated as much as they did has made me question my previous expectations on the entire season....very discouraging.

The defense we pretty much figured was going to be bad bad bad. None of this "look how much money spent on the defensive line" stuff I ever bought. If Jeff Zgonina still has a place on your roster and plays, your line is in trouble. Lots of signs pointing towards bad.

The offense was starting rookie left tackle and two new starters for the year. Including a smallish center that his previous team could have kept, but chose to stay with broken old guy instead. (no offense 55dad, just saying). Hard to learn your stuff with a bunch of road games, especially against a team with good defense.

And this team still has problems on the road, apparently.

looking at the game statistically, we weren't beaten that bad.

I think our team is going to be pretty good...once the line gets situated, we will probably do some damage to opposing teams.
 
Many teams looked rusty in their first games. Their showings weren't as embarrassing as ours, though. But Pittsburgh is one of the few smashmouth clubs in the league this year.

Our defense won't likely have some epiphany and suddenly start to wreck house. Our offense may gel into Gibb's zbs, though. If we can establish running game and limit the time our D is on the playing field, we have a legitimate chance at a winning season.

It'll be interesting to see what the impact will be when Dunta returns.

Looking at the game statistically, we were owned, since the game was over by halftime. That is the only portion of the game that needs to be looked at statistically.

In your Chron blog (More game thoughts here.) you quoted DeMeco as saying the Texans knew what to expect from the Steeler offense. I guess knowing what to expect and having a strategy (and personnel) to stop it are two entirely different things.
