Not as bad as it looks.

I understand a lot of peoples points of view on the condition of our football team after watching this years preseason football. The running game is a concern, the pass rush is a concern, the run D is a concern, and our secondary is a concern.

The running game is not as bad as everyone is making it out. First, forget Green, with his newly restructured contract, even when he does play he is not going to run hard so he can stay healthy. All he has to do is show up and suit up and he gets paid. I do think we are going to see a lot of Taylor and Slaton. More Taylor at first and Slaton will finish the year. At least this is what my magic eight ball told me. Slaton is a little DD with cartilage and more speed. I am expecting big things out of him this year.

The pass rush might not be as bad as everyone is thinking. Remember it was just preseason. You don't come out in your full defensive packages and start running stunts and exotic blitzes. You just don't, no team does. Look at Schaub and Sage, they didn't get sacked either. And to further prove my point about preseason pass rush Mario and Amobi didn't get a single sack last year either and both of them turned out just fine.

Our secondary, what can I say? Its young. Period. And missing its leader. You don't replace a player like DRob. They don't make his kind very often. And when they are made the mold gets broken. Reeves will be fine and after DRob comes back he will move to the #3 CB. Molden has been hurt and is behind and this is the first year Bennett will be a full time starter and having to take up the #1 CB mantel. Thats a lot to ask a second year player. Just ask DRob when it happened to him. CC seemed to be playing at a higher level and Demps is another one of a kind player.

Our run D scares the hell out of me though. TJ and AO both suck at playing the run. They get pushed around and can't keep linemen off Ryans. Greenwood is crap and Diles is unproven. We will have a high powered offense but I fear they won't be able to get on the field b/c teams are going to run all over us.

With that in mind I don't think we have a chance in Hell in beating Pitt this weekend. I think they will just keep hitting us with Parker and Mendenhall and lull us to sleep and once that happens Big Ben will burn Reeves for a TD with Ward, or Holmes, or the Sweed.

Year two of Kubiak and Smith (three for kubiak but he was with Cass his first) has proven to be a successful thus far. Starting from scratch on the defensive side of the ball and now only missing a RB on the offensive side, we have come along way in a short amount of time. One more good draft and it will be the Texans at the top of the division year after year. At least this year we will be competitive.

At least there are a few at ESPN that think that the Texans will win more than 7 games..
That being said, from their views, they think 8-8 is the least they will do this year...And if what they say with Indy winning 10 and still winning the division, then Houston should be right in the thick of it....
Starting Sunday, we shall see....

January 26, 2006 - Gary Kubiak hired
May 10, 2006 - Announcement that Charley Casserly would resign effective June 1

All teams have strengths and weaknesses, and you don't what the extent of those are until they start playing for real. You can only make guesses based on past performance and changes on the team.

The best thing that the Texans have going for them is that their locker room is pretty solid...

and that their starting left tackle didn't just get shot, like the guy from the Jaguars...

or that their starting center isn't out and their starting quarterback isn't recovering from knee surgery like the Colts...

or that their starting quarterback had to play for a long time in the fourth preseason game because he is still trying to figure things out and had to leave due to a hand bruise like the Titans.

Knocking on wood, of course. :texflag:

Every team has stuff that worries their fans. It's the NFL.

Isn't Ryan Lilja out on the PUP too?

Agreed...at this time last year, WR was a huge concern for the Texans and now it's a position of strength. Let's see how this team looks after the first month...I'm hoping to be surprised. :texflag:

Everyone knows this and they are unsuitable to play that role. They can't eat up blockers and keep guys off our LBs. We need to them to challenge gap integrity of the opposing lines instead of trying to hold guys up. The DT starters in Indy who, weigh less then our starting DT duo, still managed to be middle of the pack in rushing defense but the team still finished 3rd overall last year in total defense. That's all we need for this defense to make a jump...any sort of jump.

I like our team this year a lot but the defense is going to have to hold up better this year and our offense needs to not settle for FGs in the redzone.

Great post TexanRed. I agree with everything except for this one part.

I know the Stillers are tough, and they're at home, and it's kickoff weekend. I wouldn't say our Texans have zero chance to win though. Parker is injury prone, Mendenhall fumbles, and the o-line might be the biggest concern of the entire team.

Yep, after 2 preseason knee surgeries and on the active PUP, it's hardly a shock that he was placed on the reserve PUP. On top of that, their rookie guard Mike Pollak missed the final two preseason games with an injured right knee and I wouldn't count on his being there either.

Pollack was projected as a starter........and the Colts have virtually no real depth on their OL to fill in for lost starters.

if pitts O line is has week has people say and are D line KIlls and If there rookie RB continues to fumble the ball then we win

Are D line will be in Ben face all day making him run like Vick MUHAHAHAHAH but he cant run good u know how big he is !!!!!!!!

Uhhh yeahhh, we hope "our" Dline puts pressure on Rothlesberger. At least I think that is what you said.

The Steelers have had some problems with their line. This will be an interesting test.

Regarding our DL play which I was very disappointed in after the Dallas game, it actually played very well against Denver. Even though we didn't have sacks to show for it, Denver had a lot of holding penalties and plays where our DL beat the OL. Even in New Orleans, the DL was pretty strong against the run early and I know Mario got to Brees once or twice.

Anyway, we have parts of three games to look at. The first one was very encouraging, the second game was mixed, and our DL looked bad against Dallas. However, Dallas and N.O. have two of the best QBs, best lines, and best Offenses in general. I don't expect to see us struggle to get pressure against any of the teams we play in September...

You heard it hear first. Our front 7 will largely control the line of scrimmage Sunday... I'm still concerned about the backend though and also the big play.

Well, I still think the Texans have a very bright future and some Super Bowl wins in their future. I just don't think the future is this year.
