Peyton Manning back, but Saturday’s not all right

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning’s return to the practice field Tuesday was cause for relief, but not celebration.

That’s because center Jeff Saturday wasn’t there to greet him.

Saturday suffered a knee injury in the Colts’ preseason game against Buffalo on Sunday night. Colts coach Tony Dungy said it’s possible the veteran center could be lost for the season.

If you're a Colts fan, are you getting a little nervous about things?

I hope Mario and the boys smell blood in the water. It's been a long time coming!

I gotta feeling this is the year the Colts get knocked off their AFC South throne. Hopefully, the Texans are the one to do it.:woot2:

The Colts shouldn't be all that excited for Manning being activated. They would have to do that within a few more days unless they wanted him ineligible for 6 weeks into the season. Don't be surprised if he doesn't see action for a while. If they bring him back too soon, he is likely to set himself back to at least as long as he would be if he were placed on PUP. It will be interesting to see this all plays out. The Colts should be a little antsy over their "state of the union."

Would you take Manning in the 1st rd. of a FF draft?

Sorry, I'm not Fantasy rules savvy............but if it works similar to the real thing, I wouldn't bet my whole future on Manning. In the past, yes. This year, I would be as nervous as the Colts must be.

On PFT

Dungy is saying Manning is practicing & ahead of schedule.

If I understand right this could actually do more harm than good.

I don't trust Dungy after seeing how he handled Harrison's injury situation last year. (saying he wasn't hurt badly & he didn't make it back). Didn't Harrison have the same injury as Manning?

Actually Harrison, if I remember correctly, had a ruptured bursa. Manning had an infected bursa which could carry with it more serious long term implications.

Didn't they draft like 14 Centers this past draft?

I imagine at least one could step in and perform. The Colts will be the Colts........as long as Manning's playing.

Can Polian See the future or what when he drafted interior linemen in this draft? This season is starting off on a sour note for the Colts.

That's a big loss for the Colts. Timing is everything and when Manning gets back his center is gone. I'm still waiting to see if the timing is there with his receivers. This reminds me of when the Astros moved in to "Enron Field". The first year there was not so good. Could this be the same for the Colts in their new stadium?. We will see.

Didn't he have the bursa removed?

I'm sure that they'll plug someone in in Saturday's place and that guy will play just fine.

Peyton Manning "wants" to play opening game, but there are definitely mixed signals as to his ability to do so............and even if he does, he will be missing his center (Saturday) and left guard (Lilja-still recovering from offseason knee surgery). Even if Manning is at the "forced" tail end of his recovery, not having his old standby solid OL holding back the D-herds make reinjury quite likely. Remember, his is not the typical knee injury that you worry about torquing or twisting or unnatural movement of the knee for reinjury. Reinjury can occur with any trauma to the patellar (knee cap) area, direct or indirect. This could be a "long" season for Manning.......or a shortened one

Indy cut both Quinn Gray and Jared Lorenzen today, which leaves Jim Sorgi as the sole backup QB on their roster.

If they've got any concerns about Manning's health, they're putting out a pretty good smokescreen. (But it wouldn't suck if they found out they're wrong!).

This is what I wrote in part a while back re: his surgery.

After wide receiver Marvin Harrison's on-going issues with his knee last year, Colts fans (and fantasy football junkies) have to be a little skittish about what the team reveals about Peyton Manning's bursa sac surgery to his left knee last Monday. Their medical staff expects Manning to have "a full and complete return to action in four to six weeks," and that Manning should be available for the opener.

Of course, those burnt on the Colts overly optimistic estimates of Harrison's return approach this sort of talk with skepticism.

The Colts have said only generalized information about the surgery, and haven't said whether Manning's surgery was done openly or arthoscopically, or which bursa sac was removed. This semi-disgusting article about bursa sac removal suggests that someone should allow 6 to 8 weeks for healing, and that rest is an important part of the recovery.

There's some links in the original with more info. The Indy Star didn't have much detail about the surgery and they kept Manning out of sight for a while.

I'm guessing the article I read was talking about 6 to 8 weeks for normal activity. Not being chased around by large peoples.

There's another big problem that Peyton faces whenever he does come back............Remember his consant maddening technique of calling audibles.........well, with Saturday the Implementer gone, his audibles may become more maddening for him than his opponents.

I think Brett Favre has a good shot of keeping his consecutive start streak for a lot longer than expected.

Maybe Manning will get hurt again and be out for the season with the way the OL is messed up.

Looks like the Colts are going to roll the dice with Manning.

Peyton Manning is healthy enough to start playing games.

Now the Colts must find out how well his left knee will hold up to the hits.

Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy reiterated Monday that Manning would probably start Sunday night's season-opener against Chicago, perfect timing for a starting offence that failed to score a single touchdown in five pre-season games.......................................

..............The bigger concern may be the battered offensive line.

Pro Bowl centre Jeff Saturday, who makes the offensive line calls in the no-huddle offence, could miss at least six weeks after injuring a ligament in his right knee..............................

.................. Also out will be left guard Ryan Lilja, who was placed on the physically unable to perform list Saturday, and Mike Pollak, the Colts' second-round pick who was battling three-year veteran Charlie Johnson for the vacant right guard spot..................................

......................."The thing about it is you can't overblow the situation," Dungy said. "The guys have to feel like they can do their job. We played with three rookies on the line against Detroit on Thanksgiving a couple of years ago, and they did their job and we put up a lot of points."

Now, though, they will be protecting Manning against a defense that typically ranks among the league's best units - and one that will try to hit Manning hard.

"We'll bump him up a little bit in practice this week," Dungy said. "But it's not like we want him getting hit anyway."

Manning has had such great protection over the years, we don't really know if he has a glass jaw, or if he can take repeated hits, especially given his knee and OL problems. "Bumps" in rehearsal will hardly predict the outcome in "THE BIG SHOW." Things could get ugly.

Did Dungy use the word overblow in a sentence?

Tony please give us more of your great words of wisdom.

Tony the great better pray for Manning to stay healthy in his daily prayer devotional or he will get exposed for the coach that he is.

Colts without Manning = 5-11 or 6-10
