Phillip Rivers to the 49ers?

According to Fox Sports Radio, I have no link, the Chargers are talking to the 49er's about sending Phillip Rivers to the 49er's for the 1st overall draft pick so the Chargers can draft Braylon Edwards with the #1 pick...Did anyone else hear this or was I hearing things?

id get rid of him as well i mean he's a rookie and holds out from training camp because he wants more money,,,, i mean who does he think he is peyton manning ???

He will be the most expensive backup QB in the NFL if he does stay with the Chargers and playes behind Brees...

haha yeah after last season i doubt he will start for the chargers, he mighta had a chance had he made it to training camp on time, but brees had a solid season and i dont see him beign unseated by Rivers !

May as well...the Chargers have one of the worst first round draft pick records in the NFL.

Hey...how's it goin' Ryan Leaf?

If this trade did happen though, the Chargers would have THREE first round picks, and 2 of those picks would be before we picked at the #13 spot... :shocked

I head also (ESPN radio) that they were TALKING. Makes some sense as I think Rivers would grade higher than the two top QBs this year and he has had a year to learn the NFL ways, so he SHOULD be able to hit the ground faster. Niners get a semi-experienced QB and SD unloads a heavy contract and possibly gains an extra later pick or two plus the first they used on Rivers.

Got one thing to say about that...GOODBYE KAEDING!

Only trouble I see with this rumor is that Rivers just rec'd a bonus on 10 Mar...it would have seemed to have made more sense to deal him before then. However, this would solidify SD's play-offs chances esp if they could get one for the SF QBs as a back-up in the deal.

I think both teams get a good deal out of it, having 3 first round choices is crazy, they are going to get a lot of talent if it happens.

I think the Chargers would be getting a steal if this happens...Give up a back-up QB and get the #1 overall pick? I'd be all over that...

San Fran should at least get a 2nd rounder too...

What does the Chargers' kicker have to do with anything? Are you trying to say they'll draft a kicker in the first to take over for their kicker that was a rookie last year? Makes little to no sense to me...

Maybe he means that there will be no use for him anymore, IF they get Edwards, then they have a pretty stacked offensive Unit.....then they can trade back into the top 5 and draft Mike WIlliams :hmmm:

I am saying yes theyll use either a 1st or 2nd on a kicker because they will have 5 picks in the 1st 2 rounds I think and they need to upgrade weak postions (aka Kadeing)

The question to me is this. Is Rivers better than Smith/Rodgers and if he is how much better? If he isnt its a good trade for SF, I dont see how SD goes wrong unless they plan to make Rivers a starter in 06' which would probably be stupid.

You must not watch too many Chargers games. Kaeding was an extremely good kicker for a rookie. Hit the 3rd most 50+ yarders in the league. Missed only ONE of 55 extra points. I take it you make your impressions of Kaeding based on one missed playoff field goal?

That is what he is most likely doing...

If the 49ers were to do this trade, it would mean that they had Rivers graded higher coming out of college than both Rogers and Alex and I tend to agree with that.

I'm calling this idle speculation on somebodys part. The Chargers are on record as saying they do not want to pay a first pick in the draft ever again, to much money and to much of the franchise can be tied to him. Also I don't think Rivers grades that much better then Smith or Rogers, especially when you take into account the style of offense the Niners run. Also If I was Sanf Fran I'd be asking for one of the Chargers other 1st round draft picks.

As for Keading, yeah he's been pretty stable and all, but he did miss the biggest kick in his life.

Which isnt saying much since he was a ROOKIE. Doug Brien must be the worst kicker in the league, I mean, he poonched TWO in one game last year. Come on people, let's not evalute one game to boom or bust players. If anyone needs a kicker upgrade...it's the Texans...

I'd mark Rivers JUST below Rodgers. I like Rivers' arm and his college career, his mechanics are a serious question to me at the NFL level though.

I'd take Brown over Keading every day of the week and twice on Sunday. And I'm not disagreeign with you about Keading, just tryin gto show why some people aren't that high on him.

You may be right but kicker is one postion were really 1 field goal can make or break your career! Kadeing will be remember as the kicker that missed the field goal that let the Jets go on and almost beat the Steelers! If he makes that and SD wins SD might be the Superbowl Champs!

I dont know Kaeding does have potennial but Brien that bad what he did! My favorite kicker is the Jags kicker Scobey, I think they were playing Indy he floped on his butt and got a rough the kicker plenty it was hilarous! Everyone in Indy was booing him!

??? Why will he be remembered for his entire career about one kick in his ROOKIE season??? Say he goes on to hit 100% of his kicks the rest of his career, including game winners in TWELVE Super Bowls...will he still be remembered as the guy who missed a kick as a rookie??

Probaly. Such is the life of an NFL kicker. Hell most people remeber Vanderjact as the kicker who called out Peyton Manning, they remember the Jags punter as the guy who put the axe in his leg, ans so on and so on.

Well yea, those things arent everyday ON FIELD occurances for kickers like shanking a kick is. I mean the kick Kaeding missed was what 42?? 45?? yards? I'd see if it was a chip shot, but I mean, it was pretty damned tough kick from the get-go.

Ok, how bout Anderson( I think) with the Bills going wide right in teh SB, our own Kris Brown at Heinz field, FSU kickers against Miami. The list goes on.

FSU kickers against Miami. The list goes on.
Wasn't that all 3 parts Xavier Beitia, and 2 parts Chris Rix?

Anyhow, I don't understand why everyone's beating up on Kaeding.... he's a freaking rookie. It's not like his leg 100% lost the game.... as I recall, Marty was getting all the blame for playing not to lose.

Moving on....

I think this will be a GREAT deal for the 49ers. There is no consensus no. 1 this year, but what's better than to get a no. 1 candidate from last year who's goten their feet wet already? You're looknig at a Tedford QB, a system QB, or a Norm Chow QB.... I think the 49ers should make this deal, but they should milk as many draft picks from SD as possible.

Knowing the ownership of the Niners though....

"The San Francisco 49ers trade all of their entire draft picks to the San Diego Chargers for Phillip Rivers."

Farve was traded from the Falcons to the Packers maybe that is River destiny?

Just curious when was the last time and Defensive player was drafted #1?
The Browns drafted Courtney Brown, DE, #1 overall in 2000. That turned out well. :thumbdown

I'm not trying to undermind you, but It was raining and windy and he is a rookie I know you need to have high expectations of your players but for his first playoff game, there is a sliver of a chance he'll make that field goal

yeah ur right, and i'm sure he will have bigger kicks in his young career. its not like he missed the SB FG !!!!

Not necessarily. If they get a high pick in return they may view Rivers as "on par" with the others PLUS they get a pick. Now if they don't get any picks in return, your assumption is true.

Scott Norwood was the kicker for the bills that missed that FG for the Bills in the Super Bowl.

Gary Anderson didn't miss a FG all year in 1998 until the 4th quarter of the NFC Championship Game against the Falcons. If he had made it, the Vikings would have been up by 10 with just a few minutes to go. Anderson shanked it and the game was sent into OT. The Falcons went on to win it. Anderson was a great kicker for several teams, but he will always be remembered for his first miss of the year.

It would make more sense if the Chargers were to trade Brees for the 49ers 2nd round pick.

They're not trading Rivers because there's too much money invested. Trade Rivers, take the cap hit and then take on the salary of 3 first round draft picks (including the top overall pick)? Not going to happen.

texan279 said:
They are like $20 million or something like that under the cap, they could pull it off cap wise...

Isn't that before they franchised Brees though? His number is like 8 million I believe.

After they franchised Brees and released Tim Dwight, they are $16.915 million under the cap...

The Chargers' enviable cap situation allows them to do what is best for the team in regards to the QB situation. That is, they have the cap space to place the Franchise tag on Drew Brees (about $8 M) -- and/or they could trade Phil Rivers and absorb the cap hit associated with doing so. Of course, they could decide to do neither. This latest number accounts for Brees being slapped with the Franchise Tag and accounts for the cap hit incurred by releasing Tim Dwight.

They're in great cap shape right now. But what happens when Tomlinson's contract really kicks in along with (what would be) the 3 first rounders this year?

And remember the troubles the Chargers have gone through with their recent first rounders (Tomlinson, Jammer and Rivers) because of contract squabbles.
