Sunday 3:30 Kubes Press Conference

Can hear people talking softly. Man, I'd like to hear what they are saying!

Could probably get some good scoop.

Press your ear to your speaker.

Man, the Houston sports media is pathetic!

The camera panned thru the room of about 40 chairs. There were three men in the room, that's it! I don't understand how every media outlet in Houston doesn't have a representative to ask questions when the head coach makes himself available for it... No Megan Manfull, by the way.

What a joke!

Some lady talking about "...retiring a jersey..."

I guess she's talking about VY?

LOL.

It's like a college class room before the professor walks in...everybody giggling and chatting about inconsequential stuff, and then they're all going to stop in mid-sentence and straighten up when professor Kubiak walks in.

What a joke!

They're probably all still outside on the practice field. It will probably fill up when Kubes actually shows.

Sounds like more than 3 people in there right now.

Ah, the ever-popular 3:30 start time that really starts at 3:50.

And I bet it starts at 4:00 or later.

Don't they know I AM WAITING?!?!?!?!?! :foottap: [/sarcasm]

I wish I could understand what everyone is saying. Lot's of chatter but with all of it going on it's hard to stay focused on what one person is saying lol.

I think there's a few people talking about the Olympics

Kubes said they are going to have to make a spot for Harry Williams because of his outstanding ST play. Said either they will have to carry 6 WR or, if they carry 5, one of the other receivers is in serious trouble (re: watch out JJ)

what does he say about JJ?

Bunch of coach speak. But basically that he made some bad decisions and that he needs to step it up. I'm still not convinced that they will cut him this soon, but I'd be less suprised now than I would have been 2 days ago.

He seemed most disappointed in our special team play more than anything else.

Jim Marciano is a great ST coach so hopefully that part of the team fixes itself up soon.

"Slaton played pretty darn well.."

"Harry Williams making a case for earning a roster spot"

"Barber and Harrison, Chris Taylor, gotta' get better..."

"We were excellent throwing the ball...Kevin and David were exceptional...we protected the QB, except for first play of game. Owen Daniels doing well. Nice to get Chris Brown some work. Thought we were effective running the ball, but we gotta' get better."

"Studdard has played really well, continues to get better. Butler graded out well. Sage came in and played well--Slaton was a big part of that."

"Defensively, we played in spurts. Held up when we were in trouble. Gotta do better at stopping the run, lost contain vs. Reggie a couple of times."

"Individually: Mario good, Diles steps forward, Amobi had his best outing in the preseason. Kalu continues to push for a roster spot. Chaun Thompson, it was nice to see him on field and make good plays. We allowed too many plays, though."

McClain asking about Slaton getting reps with first team: Kubiak says "Slaton earned the right to get reps with first team, he'll definitely become part of that."

McClain: Is Colvin healthy? Kubiak says "Yeah"

On the roster spots for WRs: "We're looking at 5 WR, but Harry Williams making case to keep 6. If we go 6 he's fine, if we go 5 WR then SOMEONE is in trouble (slight chuckle)."

Question about Duane Brown: "He took another step forward. After the first play, Duane and Chester settled down. Duane is learning to take better angles, the speed of NFL, he's getting better."

On Chris Taylor at FB: "Chris can play both, until we get to final roster decisions--on the issue of whether we keep 1 or 2 fullbacks--that decision is going to be made off special teams and what happens elsewhere. He needs to step up his game on ST, too, and help Joe on ST."

On Duane Brown progress "He's ahead. I can't think of anything bad he did, so he probably did Ok. He's been solid, and it's going to be a challenge every week with the guys [teams] we play against, and he's facing a 3-4 this week. His attention to detail, the way he's becoming a pro, he's ahead of schedule."

McClain asking about how Kubiak is going to handle Jacoby Jones: "How do I handle him? (Kubiak awkwardly chuckles several times) We're trying 'em all. First off, we gotta get the problems fixed. Didn't fix it from week 1 to week 2. He has a sense of urgency, and I believe in him. He has to settle down and do his job. Do it consistently. And we have to get Andre Davis and David Anderson working with him. Whoever is back there, has to protect the ball. Should have made the catch on the 12 or 13. This is the big boys and he has to step up and be a big boy.."

Is David Anderson earning the right to be on the field more? "I don't know how we can keep him off the field. Where does he fit in? You know, with Andre Johnson and then Andre Davis and Kevin Walter in there...you do wonder where David fits in. I think he has special quality about him, in the slot [couldn't make out what he said here]. Is he doing enough to get on field real quick? Yeah, he sure is."

"Petey and Fletch played better last week. To say that one guy stood out, it'd be hard to say. CC and Demps played well, Roberson did a couple thiings. Special Teams play will set them apart."

Question about what in particular about ST is Kubiak talking about? "Our emphasis is, when you get 2nd or 3rd reps...from a defensive perspective..you gotta' stand out on ST. Harry Williams is five or 6 steps ahead of everyone else."

On seeing Chaun Thompson on the field more: "They all got opportunities to rush in nickel, Chaun is not 100%, but he still made plays. He has a nose for the ball. This week, we're going to mess with our nickel and adjust reps. Chaun will be isolated at the SAM and play nickel."

ON extent of Vonta's injury: "Vonta has just a shoulder bruise, and he wasn't going to play 2nd half anyway. May miss a day, but he's OK"

Plans with Ahman and Andre J "Andre practiced in all phases but physical contact, everything except when we started banging around, and we will work him toward playing in Dallas. But he'd have to be 110% to go...[wife interrupted me on Kubiak's Ahman Green statements...dang that woman!]"

"Tim Carter got dinged in last game., Hopefully he's back tomorrow"

That's all I got type out.

Great post, but one edit:

On the roster spots for WRs: "We're looking at 5 WR, but Harry Williams making case to keep 6. If we go 6 he's fine, if we go 5 SOMEONE is in trouble (slight chuckle)."

Unfortunately, I missed a section in there because of wifely interference as well.

My takes:

1. Kubiak is frustrated about JJ, but seems to want him to do well.

2. Chris Taylor has to be a ST producer to make the team, and THEN we'd see him in a FB roster spot.

3. David Anderson is on the team, likely a slot player (cha-ching!).

4. Harry Williams will be on the team, either as a 6th WR or in the 5th WR spot if "someone" doesn't make it. Hmmm....

5. Chaun Thompson is in good graces with Kubiak, but needs to be healthy

6. They are being very very cautious with AJ. Sounds like there is no contact with AJ right now. Anybody at the practices and can verify?

7. Lots of awkward chuckling and hem-hawing by Kubiak when asked about JJ. This is killing him. And McClain is picking up on it, asking about it. Makes for some good drama.

8. Slaton is the starting back thus far.

Kubiak emphasizing the youth of our squad. I remember at the beginning of last year we were said to be the youngest team in the league. I wonder if this is still the case. I know KC has a lot of youth after their last draft haul, but I wonder if we are still statistically so young compared to the rest of the league.

I am pointing this out as a positive of course fwiw.

one thing I like is that we have stability at QB. having two quality NFL QBs is a luxury that most teams dont have and it can save a season. it practically did last year (though we still didn't have a winning year)

6. They are being very very cautious with AJ. Sounds like there is no contact with AJ right now. Anybody at the practices and can verify?

I don't mind them being cautious with AJ but considering the Texans recent history about not coming out fully about a players injury it makes me kind of worried.

Didn't Kubiak say that AJ could probably have played last week?

I think they're just letting him rest up for the regular season since they already know what they have with him.

He was eerily silent about Tim Carter, except for the reference to Tim being dinged up from last week...and looking forward to seeing him on the field tomorrow.

I wonder if both Harry Williams AND Tim Carter might be ahead of JJ at this point?

1. AJ
2. KW
3. Andre Davis
4. David Anderson
5. Harry Williams
6. Tim Carter or Jacoby Jones

Kubiak said he MIGHT go with 6 WR...but if he only goes with 5, then someone is in trouble. This, IMO, easily implies that JJ is in trouble of missing out on a 5 WR roster.

But then where does that put Tim Carter?

I know he's seen and been around alot of football in his time, but I think the game has passed McClain by. He doesn't seem to ask good questions that, if any of us were in his shoes, we would probably ask.

Just my .02, but that's what I hear from him when he speaks anymore. It may be time to take John to that ol' sports journalist pasture and let him graze away his last years.

I wonder if he has become such close "friends" to the organization, that he can no longer find it in himself to pose the hard questions and criticisms, and force accountability to his "friend" interviewees. :mcnugget:

We need better sports journalists in Houston. I'm in Dallas, and they are pretty hard on the Cowboys and other teams.

Glad to see Steve Slaton going in with the first team though. He has definitely earned it, and he may be our starting RB going into the season. Chris Brown has been just barely average I think, and Ahman is (surprise) injured.
