If you could improve only one thing this year?

If you could dramatically improve only one thing on the Texans this year what would it be? Saying their record doesn't count.

Red zone offense
Running Backs
Offensive line
defensive line QB pressure
Play calling
Cb position
Other?
Please explain your answer.

It was hard for me to decide between running backs and corners but I will go with rb's. I feel like with the exception of the corners our defense as a whole is pretty well built. Coach up the o-line that is already good at pass protection and lets get a runner with some greased lightening. Go baby go!

red zone offense. i think we're a better team if the D line improves the pressure because it helps all other facets of the game but i see the progress there. not by leaps and bounds mind you, but progress still.

the red zone thing is a serious issue to me. we do very well with Brown kicking but man, think of the points left on the board. i feel mostly positive about our progress in all aspects of the game except this one. i don't have much to go on other than last saturday's game but i fear this may be something we're developing some bad habits with.

i think it mostly lies with Schaub, who is for the most part very impressive in other aspects of his game, this seams to be his biggest weakness. Perhaps the coaches could draw up something that give him easier reads in those situations but that's unlikely, there aren't many "easy reads" in that area. he just needs to be patient and smart.

true. and mind you i'm including my concerns from last season as something that didn't seem to improve and certainly those factors were still an issue then as well.

I would say less injuries but don't really think that counts.

For aspect of the game, for me, it's turnover ratio. If the defense creates more turnovers and the offense hangs onto the ball it'd make a significant difference.

If we're talking about one position, I would say Running backs. Find a stud RB to tote the rock, see who on the roster proves to be a good backup, and get Slaton into the mix as much as possible.

We aren't good enough to settle for improving just one thing this year. We must improve several or face the possibility of falling even further behind the other teams in our division. We'll have to improve at least a couple of things just to tread water and stay at .500

We need to improve our running game from both the OL and the RB sides. Our guys have to learn a new system and learn it fast. We'll start to see what this stuff looks like a few weeks into the season. I believe the first few weeks will be very frustrating for us on the offensive side of the ball. It will get better but it's going to start ugly.

We need our QB to step up his level of play as well. Schaub was better than Carr ever had been (so was Sage) but this year he needs to get comfortable back there, make better decisions, and grow into the real leader of this offense. I have no problem with the Texans bringing someone in and handing them a starting position. There's nothing wrong with that. To keep it however that person needs to perform (something we never made players do in the past) and so Schaub needs to noticably pull away from Rosenfels this year in my opinion. He needs to become that guy who was worth two second rounders.

On defense we need to see this line start wreaking havoc with other teams pass protection. We need to see them start stuffing runners regularly. Last year we seemed to never be able to get off the field and Richard Smith took a lot of abuse for his "We're going to be aggressive" defense that always had some excuse as to why they couldn't get off the field. That needs to end in 2008. We need to stop some drives.

Lots of stuff to improve on. All of it is equally important. I can't pick one thing in there.

Do you all know that at the end of a few games last season the Texans turned the ball over and lost and probably would won a few more games if they had not done that?

1. Our record

2. Turnover Ratio

3. Running game

4. Pass rush

5. CB's

The thing that we need to improve the most is our record. I don't care about stats only W's

If I have to pick ONE thing that will do the most to improve our record, I'll pick improving our running game. If our running game is better, then our defense gets more rest and hopefully plays better. If our running game is better, we improve in the red zone. If our running game is better, then hopefully we won't throw as many interceptions or have as many sacks or have as many fumbles.

If I had to pick another thing, it would be to just improve our defense all the freaking way around. We've got to force more 3 and outs. We've got to stop the pass and the run cause right now, we're not really that good at stopping either. I hate having to hope for a series of mistakes by the other team so that they don't convert on a third or fourth down.

I'd say coming out strong in the 2nd half. I think we were one of the worst 3rd quarter teams last season. We've gotta keep the foot on our opponent's throat for all 4 quarters not just 3.

Other than that improving on the road. We're a completely different football team on the road as are most .500 ball clubs.

Red Zone Offense.

Schaub looks great betweens the twenties but when it starts to tighten up is where I think we see the difference between someone who has a cannon for an arm and a guy who has a decent arm. To make up for the later Schaub needs to make good decisions with the ball and use everything at his disposal to get the offense in the end zone. We have a great targt in OD up the seams and AJ is the type of WR that has the ability to go up for a ball. I hope Slaton helps in this area and can make people miss in smaller spaces then our other backs.

If we get 7 instead of 3 that gives our defense a better cushion to play with instead of taking two trips in and coming out with 6 one big play and the other team has the lead. I'll also say a portion of that has to lie with Kubiak in play calling in the red zone. I honestly have tosay I was disapointed in PRESEASON when he didn't elect to go for it in the redzone. We already know we have a great kicker in Kris Brown but this team needs reps and something to instill confidence when they get in the redzone that the job can get done.

Like I said the Texans might have made the playoffs last year if they had less turnovers.

I agree 100%.....I don't know why we keep signing these glass RB's , and now Chris Brown? :ouch:

1. Win the turnover battle.
2. Don't make stupid penalties.
3. Win in the trenches (both sides of the ball).
4. Be even or ahead in time of possession.
5. Execute. Execute. Execute.

*Get a primary runningback.
*Get a stud safety
*Possibly still looking at DE and OLB (we'll see w/ Colvin, Diles, Adibi)
*Keep getting ZBS guards

If we do all that, we're going to the Superbowl.

PS-You just had to say "execute" didn't you. :shades:

Well, as others have said, there are lots of things to improve on, 'cause this team has some glaring weaknesses. However, keeping to the thread title, improving the running game would, IMO, do more over all.

Of course it's not hard to argue that improving the turnover ratio could also be considered most important, considering our stats on that from last year.

Hervoyel already stated that we have a lot of things to improve upon to make a playoff push. If I had to pick one that I felt was most important right now it would be turnover margin. Had Daniels not fumbled in the red zone against Cleveland and Jacoby not fumbled the punt at Tennessee the Texans could have had a 10-6 record and in the playoffs while both those teams would have been 9-7 and out of the playoffs. The games still could have ended up the same way, but giving away the ball and being unable to take it away consistently hurts this club.

I agree that the turnover ratio is huge... and I agree that we would have been in the playoffs last year if those mistakes wouldn't have been made. Can you imagine 4 teams in the playoffs from the same division? We have got another tough year ahead. My dad lives in Nashville and is a huge Titan fan. I keep up with the Titans and am very envious of their running game the last few years. Looks like they got another good one this year. Seems like Kubes could take some lessons from Fisher. No doubt Kubiak has some sort of long term plan but the suspense is killing me. At any rate I hope we sweep the Titans this year so I can rub it in.

running game, it was dreadful last year. Puts less pressure on the passing game and should help reduce the turnovers - as long as fumbilitis doesn't take hold.

seriously that would be nice but it seems they over valued/estimated their RB's.....next up aquire someone to tote the rock.

what we can expect is a much better pass rush which should keep the defense off the field & QB's off our cb's :d:

Nope. I can't imagine that because there are only 2 wildcard spots. It's impossible to have 4, the max is 3. If we would have won those two games, then we would have been in the last spot and the Titans would have been on the outside looking in.

Intensity.
Ramp it up. Waaay up.

don't just tackle the other guys; CRUSH Them
I want the other teams' RBs to lay down or look for the sideline rather than risk being run thru by our LBs
I want the other guys' WRs to take their eyes off the ball because they know that our DBs will be bringing the pain.
I'm not saying be dirty.
I'm saying be hard-nosed.

...oh and stop giving the ball away. But I've been preaching that sermon all year.
