On Saturday we open the preseason against the Denver Texans, our Houston North sister team if you will.

Who else is looking forward to this? I certainly am always excited about helping our feeder team improve!!!
 
Some might suggest that Denver lost its way without Kubiak.

That Kubiak was a humanizing influence that was a buffer between Shanihan and the players.

That over the last couple of years, Denver has lost some of its offensive identity with front office chaos and less of an emphasis on good character.

I think that with Gary Kubiak and Alex Gibbs down here that we're more "Golden Age" Denver than they are now. We have what I consider to be arguably the two most important pieces of their coaching staff from their best era.
 
The first preseason home game is always the best. Wonder if we will keep the pedal to the metal or if Kubiak will choke it back and take it easy on the Broncs.

This is all about implementing the system and testing out the players. The 1st stringers will only be in for two series.

except Duane Brown who should be in there for 3 or 4 series depending on how long the drives are.

Heck I do not even see some of the backups like Sage playing very much either, since they have been the system for a while.

Agree, not to mention a great GM that came from there too. I know he wasn't there back in the day, but I put Rick's "awesomeness" right up there with the two of them as well.

I would like to see some of Shane Boyd and see if he'll earn his way onto the roster. I would guess Brink goes to the PS, and I seem to recall Boyd playing OK against us last preseason when he was with Arizona.

In the highlights of day 3 of training camp Kubiak stated that Matt will start for around 15 plays, then Sage will play through the second quarter and possibly into the third, then it's all Boyd from there on out. He said he was holding Brink until next week so they could get a good look at Boyd.

I lived in Colorado and Denver for 35 years, and moved to Houston the same year Kubiak came to Houston, so it was pretty easy for me to adopt the Texans. It was never all that clear in Denver how much influence Kubiak had in the running of the team, or if he was just basically a Shanahan extension. Looking at the results and actions of both teams over the last couple of years, I'd say Kubiak had a much bigger influence, to the good, in Denver than I thought. Denver has definately been chaotic and churning, while the Texans have become tight, disciplined, and moving on a well defined plan. I'm willing to give Kubes much more credit for the success of those Denver teams now.

I wonder what Broncos fans think now? I'd be curious to see if they're thinking along the same lines as you are with how much Kubiak had to do with the Broncos success.

I tried finding old articles via Google News about Kubiak with the Broncos. There are plenty, but you have to pay to see the archived articles from the Rocky Mountain News.

Here is one article about Kubiak turning down the University of Colorado job in 1999. I had no idea he had an offer to become a college head coach. He also interviewed for the Cleveland Browns position then too

we are extremely lucky that he never took or didn't get a head coaching job anywhere before we had a chance to flush out the growing pains. especially here. i know he wanted this job very bad when we first came into the league. i feel like we as an organization weren't ready and he wasn't either. this was as perfect as it could have been. sitting through the painful first regime was absolutely worth it!
 
Kubiak interviewed for the Saints job in 1999 as well.

I found this old archived article from SI.com about some candidates that were considered from the HC job before Capers got it. Thought it was interesting. Do any of you remember who (if?) anyone else was up for the job besides the mentioned candidates?

Kubiak, a Houston native, said last year when he was interviewing for the New Orleans Saints' head coaching job that working near his hometown was enticing.

This year, Kubiak is one of 15 candidates the expansion Houston Texans are considering for their top job.

Others being considered include three college head coaches: Butch Davis of Miami, Walt Harris of Pittsburgh and Tyrone Willingham of Stanford. From the NFL, Pittsburgh head coach Bill Cowher, Jacksonville defensive coordinator Dom Capers and Arizona interim head coach Dave McGinnis also are being considered.

Everyone on that list aside from Kubiak and Cowher would have been bad choices (except for Capers who was a bad choice). I wonder if Cowher even had any interest in the Texans job?

I read that entire thread. Saw the posts about how they're better than us (granted they didn't all say that). I found it interesting that where, in any of the posts, was the phrase, "damn, last year when it counted, they beat the crap out of us 31-13."

I was tempted - sorely tempted - to join that forum just to post that one statement.

but no sense getting all riled up over a preseason game now is there.

No, it really doesn't matter. Besides, they could kill us Saturday without even being a better team. Who knows what will happen in a preseason game?
 
I dont care about the results, the scores that is, of pre-season games. Apart from all the rah-rah about building a winning attitude, pre-season is about seeing players perform in their positions, and possibly also getting an idea of how new schemes are going to look.

In reference to the Kubiak-thingie and how lucky we are in having the people we have in our coaching staff, I can only say this: Regardless of our teams results, the Houston Trexans are a team I am proud to call myself a fan off.

The high class that coaches, players and the owner emanates are for me a beacon of light within professional sports, and a gentleman mentality and philosophy that many other sports teams and athletes could learn from.

That does not mean I don't want the wins though ;)
 
The 3rd preseason game is the one where we'll get a real chance to gage everything. This is a scrimage, nothing more. But I'll be watching every second AND recording it because I want to see what our younger guys are like. I'm want to see how our O-line is picking up the ZBS, and believe it or not, the 3rd string QB battle between Boyd and Brinks should be interesting. From what I've read about the training camp, Boyd is looking the better of the two.

But I really can't wait to see our 1st string defense for the few rounds they'll be playing. We aren't going anywhere this year without our defense playing up to snuff.

Our team has been horrible for the last two seasons with a few isolated bright spots (Cutler, Marshall, Dummerville, Sheffler, Young). The team falling apart I wouldn't place so much on the loss of Kubiak as in the changing age of the players.

Out of the starters in the 2005 AFC Championship game (the last game Kubiak was with the Broncos) three are left on offense, defense, and including the quick and punter. That means that 7/8 of the starting lineup from those years has left Denver, retired, been cut or whatever.

The team also is adjusting to a new QB and a new offense, the offense is leaving a cut-back, zone blocking, run based offense for the traditional drop back passing offense. This explains the majority of the OL problems.

The defense has been a complete mess, mainly because the DL is garbage, which seems to be changing ( :embarrass ).

I remember the game last year, and yes Denver was destroyed. However, everyone destroyed Denver last year (any of you guys see that bears game, :spit: ).

So, I would give the Broncos one more year before they return to regular playoff contenders.

On the other hand I really enjoy watching the Texans as they play Broncos Football (or if you really want Kubiak football) and have some great players.

Who should be interesting to watch in this preseason game for the Texans?

For the Broncos it should be Eddie Royal, Anthony Aldridge, and the MLB competition.

Good Luck and hope to read some good analysis of the game here after wards.

I wasn't lying when I reported that the Broncos pretty much went away from the ZBS in the Chargers game.

Reading that thread was quite informative... I never realized that Brandon Marshall was better than Andre Johnson.
