Browsing the schedule

so i was bored and after the favre trade, i was browsing the schedule to see how would it affect our wildcard push (indirectly)

anyway the good news is that the tacks and bills will hopefully be losing another game. the other good news is that we now will def face the rodgers/brohm led packers which has become imminently more winnable than if they had favre. also the vikes are stuck with tavaris now

however the bad news is that the jets have a pretty cakewalk sched and will be a major threat to take a WC place (SF, MIA x 2, OAK, KC, CIN, SF, STL etc)

granted games never always go like you expect from looking at the sched but id be shocked if NYJ dont win at least 8

i then moved on to our own full schedule and despite the tough start, i think we'll still be right on course if we come into week 6 at 2-3 (or even worst case 1-4)..

obviously it would suck and we'd all be pretty bummed but something i noticed is that we have a chance to build some serious momentum in the mid and late part of the season.. if we're the team we think we are, theres absolutely no reason* why we wont go 4-0 or 3-1 at worst in those mid games, especially with the bye to rest up before the toughest of those v minne

now comes the home stretch beginning with MNF v the jags at home. the jags will be good but you'd have to like our chances too with the emotion etc that will surround the game (ala denver except bigger). if we do win that i think we have a good shot to go 5-0 in december (which is the main reason i posted this thread because i never noticed that before).. the easiest games on paper are on the road and id like our chances against the tacks and bears at home which would mean we'd enter the playoffs as the hottest team in the nfl!:splits: :texflag:

Playoff teams or not, I think the games @TEN and @JAX are more winnable than we think.

I think 3-2 after 5 games isn't too unrealistic.

Unless something goes wildly wrong (or, perhaps RIGHT), I also think 3-2 (or 2-3) after the first five games is likely.

I really like the way you broke the games out Maddict. We definitely start off with some tough games... but like you said December looks really easy now. I don't like the idea of playing at Green Bay in December but with Favre out of the picture- it's a much much more winnable game.

The Vikings are a team I really really fear now. Sure they don't have a QB but their rushing attack is insane behind a great OL. Their defense scares me up front with the addition of Allen at DE. But then again, San Francisco was a team that I thought would push far in the playoffs last year and ...well ... we know the end of that one.

The good news (again as you stated) is that December looks very winnable. Which means if we make it to the playoffs we'll be going in with a lot of momentum and that helps so much. Especially if we are a wildcard team facing the likes of Cleveland or Pittsburgh. Then the next round we may face San Diego, New England, Indianapolis, or Jacksonville. And if we're having that good of a year, we know we can beat 2 of the 4 teams at this point because we've probably done it already this season...:trophy:

Just remember that some really great teams will end up being terrible, and some horrible team will be a major contender.

I don't get why Brett Favre suddenly makes the Jets contenders. Florio was on 1560 this morning and all but said Favre makes the Jets a lock for the WC.

The Jets were a 4 win team last year. I know Favre had a "resurgence" last season, but he fell off toward the end averaging a meager 156 yards per game and totaling 6TD and 7INT. And that's following 18/18 and 20/29 in his previous two seasons. I'd say last year was an abberation more than a resurgence. And, on top of all that, he is joining a new team, a new staff, and a new system one month before the first regular season game.

So, even if the Jets underperformed last season, and even if Favre is the 28/15 guy of last season and not the 19/23 guy of the previous two, I don't see how the Jets have suddenly become a lock for a WC spot. I mean, I buy into the "parity" of the league as much as the next guy, but I don't buy a past-his-prime QB turning a sub-par team into a playoff lock.

Because the NFL will make sure it happens. National Favre League!!!!

Yup, every year predictions get made like the NFL is in stasis. Truth is more than half the league will have a record different from 2007 by 3 or more games.

I agree. I think he makes them a better team with him at qb than Pennington, but 8 wins is still probably a stretch. Learning the new schemes, timing with receivers, etc., in a 4 week pre-season stretch will be pretty tough.

He'll probably learn it quick and leave me with egg on my face, but that's the way I see it right now anyways.

I guess I'm always the optimist, I think we can go 5-0 those first 5 games! If I'm honest with myself, I do think that is unlikely, but that just makes me feel better about our chances of going 4-1! :D

Besides, I like our chances earlier in the season where we will (hopefully) have all our starters healthy, and raring to go. Do you remember last year? It felt great.

The Packers were a contender with Bret Farve. Now that Bret has left the team, they will most likely not make the play-offs. Sure, they may get in, with the despair the NFC is in....... but they are out of contention. IMHO anyway.

The Jets are as talented offensively, as the Packers. If their defense improves, they'll be a team to worry about for sure.

It's a blessing in disguise that we have the toughest part of the schedule first. That gives a great chance of having all of our guys healthy for those games.

Our playoff hopes just took s small hit, for sure. The AFC North is not putting out a wild card team this year, I predict. That division has to play the AFC South and the NFC East this year - the two toughest divisions in football. The Steelers have to play the Patriots and Chargers for their strength-of-schedule games. The Browns play the Broncos and Bills - two other wild card contenders.

So with the AFC North out of the equation, who's left? Well, the Jags have to be early favorites to take one of those spots, for sure. So one spot left, and maybe five teams left. The Texans, Bills Broncos, Jets, and as long as Fisher is the coach, the Tacks. I wouldn't have put the Jets very highly on that list before the Favre deal.

Still, I think we can pull it off, but we have to split with the division.

I look at the last eight and see no gimmies. All feature good to great NFL backs with good to great o-lines. Only two things I will predict for '08 is we must have our OLTs and DTs stay relatively healthy to make a legitimate play off run.

http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/The+Way+We+Hear+It/Whispers/2008/afcsouth080908.htm

The Jaguars have serious concerns about their offensive line, a team source told us. C Brad Meester should be out for approximately two months with a biceps injury, and the club’s shuffling of the guards back and forth between the right and left sides is evidence of its insecurity. Furthermore, OLT Khalif Barnes has struggled throughout camp, as has primary backup Richard Collier.
Texans CB Jamar Fletcher has all but locked up the nickel back’s role after a very good start to training camp, we’re told.

Anything can happen in this league. Remember last year we beat the three top teams in the NFC South and then lost to the Falcons(that was a huge let down).

I was going to start a thread about this, but it would be kind of backtracking... I think that this year will be our first without being routed. Like last year with the Chargers, or former years against the Colts. There always seemed to be a team that we just laid down to. Of course we will lose a couple of games, but with our offense's depth and emergence of some more playmakers, and a strong nucleus on defense, I just don't see a route in the future for this year's team.

What do y'all think?

Win the division.

That's the way to the playoffs.

The Colts, Possums, and Jags all have to play in this tough division also.

you would think their schedule would be harder. The Colts will play the top teams in the AFC, the Jags will play the second place teams in the AFC, the Titans will play the #3 teams..... we play the Raiders, the Dolphins, and the Ravens.

But it never works out that way, our schedule is always harder...
