NFL announces new fan code of conduct

NEW YORK (AP)—The NFL implemented a new code of fan conduct Tuesday, warning that spectators who misbehave will be ejected from stadiums and barred from coming back.

The policy, first recommended by commissioner Roger Goodell at league meetings in April, is aimed at conduct that the league said “detracts from the gameday experience.”

It includes bans on:

— Behavior that is unruly, disruptive, or illegal.

— Drunkenness and signs of alcohol impairment that result in irresponsible behavior.

— Foul or abusive language or obscene gestures.

— Interference with the progress of the game, including throwing objects onto the field.

— Failing to follow instructions of stadium personnel.

— Verbal or physical harassment of fans from the opposing team.

“The in-stadium experience is critically important to the NFL, our clubs and our fans and it will be a major focus this season,” Goodell said in a statement. “We are committed to improving the fan experience in every way we can—from the time fans arrive in the parking lot to when they depart the stadium.”

The league also left teams the option of adding additional provisions to the code based on local circumstances. It said the guidelines would be contained in mailings to fans and signs posted at stadiums.

"— Drunkenness and signs of alcohol impairment that result in irresponsible behavior."

yeah, good luck enforcing that one.

Drunkenness and signs of alcohol impairment that result in irresponsible behavior.

yeah, riiiiiiiiiiight. With all the beer sponsors and amount of money that booze brings in to games, I see this as lip service and nothing else. There are literally dozens of these bozos in the yellow lot after every game.

Verbal or physical harassment of fans from the opposing team.

Will they kick out fans of opposing teams that are doing that to Texans fans?

I'd like to see them take care of a few Titans fans, not to mention some of the Saints fans that have been nothing short of obnoxious at Reliant Stadium.

Failing to follow instructions of stadium personnel.

That leaves a lot of room for interpretation. If a lot of people are complaining about others standing up - and the stadium personnel goes and tells you to sit down - then what?

They're going to have to start issuing a fan Bill of Rights with every ticket sold. Sheesh.

Does the NFL really have nothing better to do, like say, oh, I don't know....how 'bout hammering out a new CBA?

I think teams already have their rules for fan conduct. I don't see the purpose of Goodell feeling like he needs to get involved. Total waste of time it seems. This guy is really starting to bug the crap out of me.

My guess is that if you don't do what the stadium personnel tell you to do you get kicked out. I would think the league would give them full authority to police their own.

Good thing that's not a rule on this board, I would have never gotten past my fifth post. LOL

So what are all those i*d*i*o*t*i*c Cowboys fans gonna do with their time this season...since they won't be able to go to games anymore?

I attended games there for something like 15 seasons...I think in all that time I saw maybe 3 fights. I did see one guy run all the way down the ramp and right over the ramp once trying to get a picture of a cheerleader.

NFL fans in Texas are well behaved compared to the rest of the country.

So the corporations send these "fans" to the game and these "fans" find there are no Mint Juleps that could hold a candle to that other animal competition they go to in Kentucky. Not only that the peasants are so unruly they stand and yell and have a great time while drinking their swill while they should be back at work. Sunday's are a working day after all if your job is vital to their pay.

So the bosses go to the head of this little NFL group and demand civility at these games or they will take their money and go home. Goodell, who heard only "take" and "money" in the same sentence, took a break from interfering in a team's in-house business with one of their players to issue a statement telling the riff-raff to be reverent or else.

Boy, these corporations would love the NFL if it weren't for the people.

Disclaimer: I'm tired, the rant made little sense, but it felt good. :tiphat:

I don't think this is aimed at Texans fans, or even Reliant visitors. There are some stadiums where most of sections have completely outrageous jerks spewing profanity the whole game. No reasonable person would take a child (or wife) to such a place. Not a problem at Reliant from what I have seen.

Hey it gets boring and a drunk cowpoke wanted to ask a girl out . He tripped and fell over the banister whats bad about that ?:photos: I have seen some bad events at games but not in reliant yet , unless you count bored kids throwing stuff ( mostly paper ) over the banister . In the dome however in the luv ya blue days it was very common to see someone getting the bologna stomped out of them .

I'll run off and find a link in a minute. But I think what he is talking about is the male Jet fans yelling at women to show their boobies in the tunnel areas.

or if you are more of the youtube type

Well I'm a she not he but yes that was what I was talking about...it made big news last season and I would think this is perhaps indirectly related to things like that....

Actually what the dude was doing was trying to race down to get a picture of the cheerleaders as they were crossing the endzone area where I sat and he just kept running and running and boom he went right over the ramp onto the field.

One of those times you want to laugh but you are wondering if he killed himself...as it turned out he bounced right up into the waiting arms of the security.

Let just say he REALLY wanted that picture!

Come on Blue, you know better than that. A Cowboys player has never taunted Bob McNair, nor has a Cowboys fan ever booed Bob McNair in his stadium.:winky:

It is sad that the league has to set a procedures guide, but I guess for the benefit of the whole the few who will do their own thing at the expense of the majority, then the safeguards are necessary.

I agree. That is the reason I have never invited my mom out to a game. Not that she has never heard such language, but I am trying to let her see a good time, not some drunk dude cursing after every play. Actually, and this will sound prud-ish, the cursing and drunken behavior did really turn me off to the stadium experience last season. I tailgate, yell, clap, stand, have a good time, but as the season went on, it seemed more and more jackasses couldn't handle themselves. Constant barrage of cursing, yelling at other fans, being served more beer ended up being a weekly deal near the end of the season.

I was yelling at one the refs during the titans game last season, telling him he was blind, he was missing a good game, etc. over some blown call. What can I say my emotions got the best of me, guess you could kick out for something like that.

I do not know anyone personally that has been ejected from a Texans game. Overalls was asked to sit down once, but the usher was wrong and its since been worked out.

The only other incidents I remember are:
A) a Broncos fan (not from last year - but preseason a few years ago) that threw a beer at someone, but missed. Unfortunately for this poor soul the drink hit a little kid.. Dude got his a$$ whooped in record time in the concourse... People were long gone before the law showed up.

B) Drunk Cowboy fan that didn't even know who half of their starters were - got a minor beat down.

C) Two Eagles fans fighting each other. Something about one of them wearing a T.O. jersey.

So basically what you are saying is Texans fans rock! Got it.

There was a Texans fan sitting behind me on last year that got into a verbal confrontation with another fan about stats. The new fan sounded more like a young college type that wanted to name drop more than really having facts straight about game stats. Well, the older, seasoned fans got highly aggitated and told the other younger guy that he had forgotten more than he ever knew about football, and the younger guy brushed him off. Then things turned really ugly and just short of an assault if the guy would have agreed to settle it. More F bombs were spouted than at a Bullets for My Valentine concert. It was ugly, annoying, distracting and totally inappropriate. I'm really glad the older guy took a walk and allowed himself to settle down. It certainly could have turned into a situation where he could have gotten his licence revoked.

So that's what happened to that guy! I don't know if it was the same fan or not but the last preseason game I went to against the Broncos in 2005 some Broncos fan kept talking smack. The Broncos had the game in hand and a bunch of people started to leave. Me and my brother got up to move closer to the field, he assumed that we were getting up to leave so I hollered back saying we're getting better seats. asshat! I hope it was that guy.

It very well may have been. 2005 sounds correct. Were you in section 119 or 120 at the time??

Looking at the seating chart, I think we were in sections 118 and he was in the 119 section. It must have been that loud obnoxious Denver fan.

Titan fan is waaayyy outta control nowadays. I was amazed they were allowed to cuss and carry on like some were.

I knew if Titantard was this bad... nawlins refugee would be much worse. I watched that one on TV.

That was it then. He threw the drink and proceeded to the concourse when many people followed him up from sections 119 and 120 from what I saw. By the time I made it up there, dude was in heap and everyone had scattered.

Well he was asking for it. I didn't see it but I wish I did. :texflag:

Thank God the Bull Pen has a 'specifically stated exclusion' to the sit down garbage. I'd be thrown out EVERY game otherwise.

Man, if I couldn't yell at the refs (and the players) it just wouldn't be a GAMEDAY experience.

...one of my co-workers has a weekend job as a "green shirt" for the section that has players wives, etc. in it. She sent me the CoC as soon as it came out and told me I better "watch myself"! She's a hoot!

Great, even football is subject to the nanny state mentality. Is there any such escape in this country?

LOL. So BASICALLY they're not going to let anyone attend the home games of the:

Oakland Raiders

NY Giants

or

Dallas Cowgirls?

Sweet...
