GM Rick Smith issues Contract

Great story. Smith is a class act. For some reason I can't see our previous GM doing that.

btw, that yellow shirt in the background was the most power trippy yellow shirts I've seen in a while. I won't get into details but between him and his buddy with the black glasses you would have thought we were at boot camp, not training camp.

Wow! That was awesome, thank you for sharing. What a great guy, as much as we love our team, this is just icing on the cake to have high character guys like Rick leading this organization.

aj will not get over that guy. too funny. BTW most of the yellow shirts have been wonderful this last week. so don't let one, maybe two bad apples get in the way.

I just thought when he yelled down that kid up front - the one who was on one knee and not sitting (but obviously not obstructing anyone's view) - was a bit over the top.

Thanks - !

This was the kind of story that the Texans fanbase needs to hear (especially those of us who have been in this thing since before we had a logo). I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time, and had a means to relay the story (BRB.com). Thanks for all the positive feedback.

Exactly - Charlie Casserly may have been well versed in the inner workings of an NFL Front Office, but he lacked the kind of social graces that have allowed Rick Smith to excel in a relatively short period of time.

If anyone else was in the immediate area, or saw Rick Smith and Donovan from the stands, feel free to chime in.

Thanks for writing a great, positive story, Solis! :thumbup

I like Smith and Kubiak, and believe in giving them more than the benefit of a doubt to get this team on a winning course. On top of their football minds and skills, they are just good men who care about this team and this city.

Not that that Cass and Capers weren't classy, but I have a great feeling about these two men. Very confident and competant and no ego's. When our team becomes a consistent winner they will be the driving force.

I know what you're talking about. I was out there on Sat. morning. YellaBoy took his usher job a bit too seriously.
...the cranky old fart...

Very good read and nice story to hear about. It is things like that make this team better than any other NFL team out there. The only way certain organization would do this if there was a bunch of cameras around so it would be made national headlines.

Like when Ahman Green was signed and he wanted his number it was a nice story but did not attract much attention by espin until after Comical and Fanhouse did a piece on it. GM Rick Smith did this not cause he had to or for publicity but because he wanted to, no other reason.

I have to bump this, awesome and I hate to see it go down off of the first page within the first day. just to give others to read

That was awesome. I always knew Rick was a good guy, you can just tell by listening to him talk and the way he carries himself. Things like this really make me proud to be a fan of such a classy organization. :texflag:

"Well, it's complicated, you see...I could talk for days why we wouldn't be interested in a guy like Donovan. First off, you see, we are already set at QB with David Carr who, as you know, was the number one pick overall for our team. While Donovan is certainly a good quarterback, he's contractually bound to the Eagles organization, you see. We could be implicated on tampering charges, you see. And, uh, there's that little issue of Donovan desiring a large contract, which, uh, is tied up at the moment in David Carr."

Interviewer: But David is not even on our team anymore, Mr. Casserly.

"You're not listening, you see, it's a very very complicated system of biometrics and cap negotiation. This is like swimming with sharks and you're wearing raw meat underwear, you see. Being a GM is not as easy as you might think, buddy boy. You wanna' swim with the sharks? These aren't nurse sharks, kiddo. These are hammerheads, great whites, and other types of malcontents."

Interviewer: Mr. Casserly, Rick Smith is talking about the kid's report card.

"I am not sure what sort of report card Mr. Smith is talking about and why Rick is telling Donovan to keep his grades up. I seem to recall Donovan grading out fairly well on my Casserly No-Miss Scouting Report Card system that I patented myself when I was 37 and still living in my parent's basement. Oh, I know why you think I wouldn't be interested in Donovan. Yes, it's perfectly clear now. It's because he's of African descent. correct? Well, you see, I am no racist. You can mark this down: Charley Casserly is not a racist."

Interviewer: I don't even know what to say.

"Good. Now you see the whole picture. It's not a pretty sight, is it? Try being a GM in today's NFL. It's like riding shotgun with Lindsey Lohan. Or Morgan Freeman. Or Ted Kennedy. It's not easy, kid."

You forgot 'this isn't the way it works in the NFL.'

I think McNair's blood still boils over that snarky little comment...
