Del Rio losing patience as eighth overall pick Harvey holds out

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio deviated from the norm Wednesday by discussing contract negotiations with first-round draft pick Derrick Harvey and calling the deals brokered ahead of him "outrageous."

Del Rio sent a clear message to Harvey, the eighth overall selection who has missed nine practices during training camp, and expressed frustration with the way things have unfolded

"He's fallen behind, there's no question," Del Rio said. "It's unfortunate that he's not here. There's been some deals in front of us that are outrageous, in my opinion, and it makes it difficult to have him here. But we have a belief in where we're going to go and we still have a belief in where it's going to go, and right now we're not in agreement so he's out and he's losing time.

"At some time you lose so much work that you don't become as valuable. We're not there yet, but it's time to get him in camp. Hopefully he wants to be here bad enough we'll work something out."

It could be expensive.

The small-market Jaguars, who have struggled to sell tickets and don't have a stadium sponsor, were hoping New Orleans would be more frugal with defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis. But the Saints gave the No. 7 pick a five-year deal Tuesday that reportedly included $19.5 million guaranteed.

Based on the NFL's typical slotting system, Harvey could be seeking a deal close in value.

"What's happened at the very top of the first round is ridiculous," Del Rio said. "When you're paying the guys who have never done anything more than star football players in this league that have played for years and established themselves at this level what they're capable of, it can be a little frustrating.

Ha Ha.

It may be tough to be a Texan fan but thank God I am not a Jag fan.

So far this off season they have lost there starting receivers to injury and another was caught doing cocaine in his car. They traded away one of there best defensive players to the Bills, and then gave up half there draft for a guy who is holding out. And now Jackie is taking shots at him in the media. Classic.

Can anyone say 0-16?

I just heard the Jags placed another Tarp order for the second stadium level.

The Jags will still be a force to reckon with, regardless of the injuries and other things that have happened.

So long as Pocket Hercules is healthy, they will be a contender.

I agree with him about the money given to rookies. Goodell mentioned it as well I believe a few weeks back. It's only a matter of time before they change the way the players are payed. They need to do what the NBA does and have a slotting system

Trade up into the top ten and then ***** about the price? What the hell did you expect....a freaking bargain? Doi.

EXACTLY what I was thinking the entire time I was reading it. You trade up to the #8 pick in the draft, you KNOW there are going to be consequences to that as far as the ol' checkbook goes, you KNOW rookie salaries are already ridiculous at the very top of the draft and only going up... and still ***** about it!!!???

That's definitely a problem. These players shouldn't be getting paid more than established pro bowl players that have put in their time and proven their worth.

Hold out Harvey, hold out as loong as you want. How many other 1st rd picks still need to sign?

Harvey and Rivers of the Bengals are the only remaining unsigned 1st round draft picks.

lol at your avatar OMT...Do people really think you are an Ole Miss?

That was in the article- I REALLY need to work on my reading comprehension! And yes, I get the occasional "Miss Texan" or the implied language that I am of the female gender or of advanced age/wisdom. I most certainly am not :)

Didn't many pundits consider this guy a big-time "reach" by the Jags at #8
anyway ?

I think it was a surprise he went at #8 and that the Jags traded so far up to get him. Most would call it a reach but I relate it to the Duane Brown pick. A lot of people believed Cincinnati would have taken him at #9 so that's why the Jags traded just before them. He most likely would have gone next but some people still consider it a reach. Most thought he'd go between 9 and 18.

The Jags already had a weak WR core, and with Porter and Williams down this looks really good for us. They'll have to depend completely on their running game now, because their WR's were bad in the past, but now they'll easily have the worst set of WR's in the entire league.

9 in the box against the Jags!

At least Tennessee's wr's have some potential...

If we all chipped in $2 we could probably just buy the jags, and trade MJD to the texans, thereby eliminating our RB issues

They need to redesign their site to better reflect their "relationship" with the Jags.

Yeah that sounds pretty easy right? Last year they had Matt Jones, Wilford, and some other nobodies.

This year they brought in Porter who's better than anyone they had maybe, but now will be hurt throughout camp and pre season, and their WR from last year in Reggie Williams who's out indefinitely.

Then they also brought in Troy Williamson who's looked like a total bust.

I know damn well that the Texans are going to crush the Jags on that Monday night at Reliant. Now it looks like we just might be able to sweep them again this year, because who is Garrard going to be able to throw the ball to?
