Gaffney or Walter

I was just kinda wondering how Jabar Gaffney would fit in this offense had he stuck around. I'm guessing Walter would not have been brought in. Gaffney did show some flashes while he was here, and seems to be doing ok with Brady throwing to him. With Schaub throwing to him, I think he would be just as productive as Walter, if not a little more. What do you think?

Walter has better hands and is a better blocker. However, Gaffney would have been a good #3 WR in the slot.

Actually, Gaffney could have even been a pretty productive #2 WR opposite Andre Johnson, with Owen Daniels at TE. Unfortunately, Carr wasn't able to look at more than one option before going into the duck and cover.

Are you kidding me. Gaffney has better hands and runs great routes. According to Tom Brady, he's the best overall receiver they have. BUT, I would still go with Walter. Has the intangible "it" factor. I love the way he stepped up last season and did work. With Johnson going out, he could have shyed away and chalked it up to double teams and inexperience.......But the kid laid it on the line!

Thanks for throwing me those 23 TD passes last year!

Signed,

I was and am a Gaffney fan. He did alright here with Carr throwing to him. Not great mind you but he was a decent WR. I don't like playing the woulda, coulda, shoulda game and am content with the way our passing game progressed last season with all that happened.

well this fantasy person said Gaffney was better than Stallworth last year

Gaffney is a great sleeper in 2008 if he can hold off Jackson and Washington in training camp. Gaffney played better than Stallworth last year and will benefit from all the attention given toward Moss and Welker. Don't plan on drafting Washington or Jackson, but consider Gaffney a solid No. 4 Fantasy option.
(Updated 07/22/2008).
According to the Pats' website, Gaffney continues to shine this year in training camp
Who’s hot: Jabar Gaffney. The veteran has shown over the last two seasons to be one of Brady’s favorite targets at some key times. He’s done the same thing to open camp. He’s caught plenty of passes from No. 12 both from the slot and the outside. He also made a bid for play of the day on Sunday morning with a great catch in the back corner of the end zone beating Terrence Wheatley and Brandon Meriweather on a ball thrown by Matt Gutierrez.
I still don't know if I'd bring him back here since he and Schaub would have to establish the same chemistry/trust that Schaub and Walter have and that, apparently, Gaffney has with Tom Brady. Swapping the two of them out - I would kinda set our offense back a bit while they got used to each other.

Now if you're playing "Let's Revise History" meaning Gaffney never left.... I don't think we'd be any worse off. Both have learned to be effective route runners and guys who find holes in zone coverage. Both Gaffney (11 catches) and Walter (17 catches) were under-used by their respective teams in '06 but put themselves on the map in '07 when given a real chance to produce.

You guys act like Gaffney has been lighting up the stadium in NE. All he's been doing is benefiting from being the last option out there after Moss, Welker, Stallworth when he was there, Watson, and then oh yeah Gaffney isn't being covered.

I don't see Gaffney really helping us out that much right now. He could have done better while he was a Texan. Yeah, it wasn't all his fault, but he wasn't exactly that good for us either. Anyone remember when that fool caught that pass and was running into the end zone and decided to celebrate a little to early and fumbled the ball out of bounds or into a safety or something?

I like Gaffney a whole lot better without a Texans jersey.

Were you people watching the same Gaffney I was? He did, and does suck! He was so disinterested in playing here he would let passes hit him in the shoulder without even looking around. Don't you guys get it? We weren't good enough for this primadona! Walter is twice the receiver that Gaffney ever thought he was.

The only reason Gaffney is still in the league is Brady makes any receiver look better. Just look at what he and Moss have performed. Moss was good, but he didn't catch 23 TD's in one season until he joined up with Brady.

Yeah, I remember those plays all so well. When David Carr would be getting pounded all game long, all he would need was a completed pass or two to get into a rythem and more confidence, but could he ever get any WR's other than AJ to actually step up and MAKE A BIG PLAY?? NOPE. Oh, there's Gaffney wide open up the middle, and BAM goes the ricochet off of his shoulder pads!!

He gets back to the huddle. "Sorry David, I know you really needed that for your confidence but I was so into my route I forgot that I'm supposed to be catching passes".

What happens next??? The punting team steps on the field.

You would have had to have been trying to miss the mark on this one by any wider a margin. We watched the same Gaffney but you completely misinterpreted what you were seeing. Gaffney was a rookie WR (a year early coming out no less) who "developed" (if you could call it that) trying to be the second or third option for a QB who could only see the first read and the safety valve. Name one player who got better playing in the Texans "Don't do anything to make David look bad" offense please.

The only two offensive players who ever looked good while David Carr was here were Andre Johnson (first option) and Domanick Davis (safety valve). Everybody else ran their routes and got used to being completely ignored. You say he was disinterested but the conventional wisdom says he was surprised to be targeted on the rare occasions that Carr actually saw someone other than AJ or DD.

The reason Gaffney is still in the league is that he grew up. Did he catch a break being signed by New England? Certainly. Gaffney did however meet the expectations. He ran the routes, caught the ball, and grew into the kind of player he always had the potential to be. If he hadn't then he'd be a former Patriot.

I think that was more on David Carr sucking, and ****ing his pants when the rush came which led to hurried and bad throws.

I disagree. Three WRs (AJ, Moulds, Gaffney) doesn't make up a whole team and it only cost us a 7th rounder to bring Walter here. Kubiak had some nice things to say about him when we obtained him (before he even met him), so I don't think there is reason to believe we wouldn't have signed Walter if we still had Gaffney.

Joker....This wasn't something in print, it was an interview that Brady did a few weeks back. Obviously he stated that Moss is one of the greatest of all time with his athleticism, but Gaffney is the best overall receiver, in terms of skill set. This is not anything new. Many thought Gaffney, coming out of college, would be awesome. He had excellent hands and great route running. His main issue was going to be his overall speed and the system he went to. Obviously, Houston was the worst for him, being a #2, and it never allowed him to work the field, as the slot position does. But again, regardless. I would take Walters, due to his size, strength, and his ability to be a supporting cast, to the #1 receiver in the league.....Andre Johnson.....And that one came fromm Randy Moss! If I'm quoting correctly, he said "Andre Johnson will be the #1 receiver when I'm gone, that due is a beast" :kingkong:

I have no doubt in this answer when I say Kevin Walter, sure hands, great route runner, good blocker and special teams contributor.

I am biased though as I am a huge supporter of K-Dub.

lol:

I think some people forget, due to Randy's time in Oakland, how much of an amazing WR he was and still is. Brady has helped average WR's look okay but given a superior weapon like Moss of course he's going to go off for the amount of TD's he did. Randy's Season high TWICE before was 17.

Gaffney vs Walter? Walter is tougher over the middle but Gaffney has more outside speed. Push IMO.

apples to oranges.

gaffney earned little value with Carr, now we can see what he can do.

Walter is a little less talented but makes up for it in all facets of the game.

Walter seems to be the better pro. He seems hungrier, and has better hands than Gaffney. I think they have similiar athletic ability, I just prefer Walter's hard work approach to the game.

Gaffney had only played a couple of seasons while Carr was here and was not that good. Over the middle he is not good dropping passes but on the outside he does have some speed. Like others have said in this thread Brady is probably the best QB in the league today and he does make a couple of his WR look better than they really are but it also had to do with having a brand new coaching staff that worked with him and made him a little better. The Texans staff didn't work with him but sometimes a player is just better off when there is a change. Just like any sport football has just the good players and then the superstar players and although Gaffney will always be that good and probably never will be that over the top player I do think that if he is worked with he could be a good WR to to have on your team wich the Pats have done just that. Two years ago the Pats probably did have the best WR core in the league and just maybe they still do. Who knows?

I'm gonna go with Walter...

Better blocker and more physical...

For this offense I think we have enough guys who can "recieve"....It's nice to have recievers that can potentially turn 15 yard runs into 30 yard runs on a consistent basis...

Gaffney is another guy...He's pretty talented, but he's not talented enough for me to definitively say I'd rather have him over Walter...

And who knows...Gaffney may just be playing well because he's no longer a feature reciever.....Some guys excel being the third or fourth reciever, but struggle being a feature reciever because of the attention being paid to them...

For now I'll roll with the guy who's rolling with me...

Do some of you actually look at the numbers before you say some of these things. Gaffney plays for one of the best offenses in history and his numbers except for touchdowns are worst for the Pats than they were for us. I know he was #2 here but he should have been and always had been a #3. He is averaging 24 catches and 295 yards and 3 tds in 2 years with the Pats. How much are we missing.

Not that much but I'd much rather have Walter though because he catches more and because of his blocking skills.

Gaffney is my favorite Pat which isn't saying much seeing as I despise the team but he has flourished with Brady... I don't know really know how to compare them... ok so Gaffney went from Carr who we'll nicely label sub-par to playing with Tom Brady. HE'S F@#$ING TOM BRADY!!! but then he was a bigger producer than Stallworth and became a little of his clutch receiver ex. the Baltimore play from this year, which was complete bullshit but that's beyond the point.

Walter on the other hand stepped up big last year and kicked major ass down the stretch, not to mention he works in Kubes' system.
