Who else thinks Mario is going to have an absolute monster year

I hope my gut is right but it is telling me that Mario Williams is going to have a HUGE season this year. I am talking about close to 20 sacks and being an unstoppable force. I think he will emerge as the premiere DE in the league.

Everything I have read says that he is destroying people in OTAs and hopefully at camp starting this week. I know people who know him and they say he is extremely motivated and dedicated to be the best in the league. I love to see it and I hope I am right.

I do feel positive about Mario's potential to have a great year. His success is such an important aspect of establishing a good defense.

i think mario's going to be considered for defensive player of the year. his flaw the first two seasons was his game speed - slow to read, slow to adjust, slow off the snap. not only did that improve incredibly last season, with the talks from coaches and players so far this offseason, noone's faster. the bandwagon is growing ... best "worst draft pick ever" EVER!

I'd like to see him just improve from last year...as for a monster year, that would be nice to see, as sack totals do not much mean he had monster year, but if he can command a double team alot, and open it up for some other teammates, then I am all for that...I will however take 20 sacks !

He doesn't have get 20 sacks though that would be nice. But if he is faster off the edge and draws two or three guys to defend him then that would allow his team mates to get their chances at getting some sacks.

I too think Mario is going to have a HUGE year and will be considered the best DE in the NFL. I'm not sure about his actual sack totals, but really hope they are high.

I think a lot of teams will be gameplanning for him and he will draw a LOT of attention from the other teams. That will help the other D-linemen. But it also sounds like Amobi is greatly improving- most improved says Kubiak. I think the combination of that + good depth at DT, Weaver hopefully being healthy and another threat with Colvin on passing downs is really going to help Mario too. That's what I love about the DL- Mario being so good is going to help the other players, but the other players are going to help Mario too.

I think Mario will have a great season but to me him having a monster year hinges upon what else is happening on the line. We need consistant pressure on the opposite side. Honestly I'm not counting much on Weaver but I hope Colvin, Bulman and Kalu can provide pressure by committe.

I do think we'll get good push up the middle from the DT's with whomever is rotating in.

Smith is going to also not be afraid to blitz or be aggressive early in the season.

If the other side is able to get any kind of P on the QB whatsoever then it may be a scary season for some AFC QB's.:smiliedance: :smiliedance: :smiliedance:

With the tremendous speed we have at LBs this year, I think the Texans will bring the blitz a bit more than last year.

Demeco and Greenwood both run in the low to mid 4.6x

Thompson ran a 4.44 when he first enter the league.

Adibi runs in the high 4.6x

Moffitt actually runs under 4.60

Bentley ran a 4.74 out of Northwestern.
Diles may be the slowest in the bunch, I think his 40 speed is around 4.79

I don't know Colvin's actual speed, but he looks pretty fast and quick.

No idea how many sacks Mario will have, but I definitely think he will be a monster out there!

They all seem to be pretty fast guys.

Kubiak was quoted in the Chronicle Sunday that he hadn't been around anyone better in the offseason. Having said that, let's see if that carries over to camp and on into the season. I'm pumped about the possibility that he could have truly breakout season. Let's see how it plays out. Can't wait!

I'm not sure how much blitzing we will do. I think with the uncertainty back in the secondary, he might not blitz nearly as much as you guys think. My hunch is that he is going to try to rely on the front 4 to provide most of the rush, with an occaisonal 5th rusher from the LB position.

I think Mario's year will be another step forward. His improvement should decrease the pressure on the secondary. Allowing for more exotic defensive calls due to teams having to gameplan just for him. IMO 17.5 sacks

Can't remember whether I heard it or read it but remember hearing that the Texans were NOT going to blitz much this year.

Probably heard it on 610 and I don't remember the reasoning WHY but I do remember hearing that.

I only say that I think we will be blitzing more than we did last year!

I am thinking 5 sacks, all in game 1 vs. Pittsburgh. After that, every team changes the game plan to run only and run whatever side Mario is not. We hold every team to less than 125 combined yards per game due to playing 10 opposite Mario.

I for one am not going to pile-up sky-high expectations for Mario. He had
enough of that crap his rookie year.
I just hope he stays healthy, and if so I'm confidant everything will fall in place for him.

That's not what they said..I am sure of that. Now how they know that I do not remember. I can't even remember WHO said it..probably John McClain. And I remember thinking that surprised me.

If Mario can get to double digit sacks and improve upon deflections, hurries and tackles I will be very happy. I want a better defensive unit no matter where the production comes from. :texflag:

I have this strange feeling that he is going to be unstoppable this year.

Its the first time I've felt this way about a Texan player. Im usually so reserved in my excitement, as a way of hoping not to be disapointed. This year, I really feel like Mario is going to shine.

SUPER MARIO IS A MONSTER ON THE FIELD! He will wreck HAVOC to the opposition!.... Man, I have been watching way too much Avatar "The Last Airbender" with my 6 y.o. son!

Do I think the defense will get more sacks.......yes. Do I think Mario will get 14 or more again.....no. I think he will be in the 11-12 range though. I see two things happening, a more balanced rush attack so the sacks get a bit more spread out and teams really knowing that Mario is the real deal and doing a better job of planning for him which sort of plays to the more balanced sack numbers because they are using more of their efforts to keep Mario off of the QB thereby giving others an easier path.

I'm with you on this. Mario might not have the super numbers but the other guys (Colvin, Okoye) should be free to make more plays.

Even the HCs cannot say that, let alone McClain!
Now, the Texans' philosophy last year was pure to the core of football.
As a percentage, they stay with the down-and-distance philosophy.

They blitz most often on second down and long.
They stay back more on third and long.
(Now I guess I will have to go back and count them, I hope I have the time.)

Assuming that my observations are legitimate overall on that count.
Assuming that with an improved D-line and more speed in the LB-corp, we should be able to do better on first down.
That will create more second and long situations where we have the option to send the blitz.

It will never fly for me that the HC and DC would pronounce even before TC even starts that we won't blitz as much as last year.
We didn't blitz much at all last year anyway!

This is kind of what I am thinking. The defense is going to be better and the team's sack totals will be up because others will be getting to the QB as well. It won't capture the hearts of the simpletons who will just look at his stats, but his overall year will be tremendous. I get goose bumps thinking about the havoc he and the rest of the Steel Blue Swarm will cause. :mario:

I think Mario will have between 12 - 16 sacks this year. But I think he is going to be most effective creating havoc in the backfield on runs, dropping backs in the backfield. :toast2:

I don't know about "Monster" year, but I expect him to have a VERY solid one that should give him a chance to go to his 1st Pro Bowl.

For humor, try THIS LINK to Justice's blog in early 2007. Try to find love for the Mario pick in the comments.
