PRO TIMING DAY AT USC

Williamson fast becoming a scout favorite

By JOSEPH PERSON

Staff Writer

A bevy of NFL scouts and a couple of head coaches descended on USC’s indoor practice facility Wednesday for the Game*censored*s’ annual pro timing day. While 16 seniors from the 2004 team came out to be evaluated, it was evident that all eyes and handheld timing devices were on the lone junior in the bunch — wide receiver Troy Williamson.

Since announcing in December that he would forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft, Williamson’s stock has risen as his 40-yard dash times have fallen. The Jackson native ran the 40 in 4.38 seconds at the February combine in Indianapolis, vaulting him into the first round in the mock drafts of most experts.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper projects Williamson as the 16th overall pick, calling the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder “the fastest receiver in the draft.”

Williamson’s Indy time was fast enough that he chose not to run the 40 again Wednesday. Instead, he spent the day doing shuttle drills, running routes and catching passes. And when the proceedings wrapped up, many of the two dozen scouts in attendance made a beeline to Williamson to shake his hand and congratulate him on a good showing.

“It’s just coming out to work,” Williamson said as he changed out of his cleats. “I feel like I came out to work in Indy and came out to work right now, regardless if I had two dropped balls or whatever. I’m always ready to work.”

The two NFL head coaches who made the trip to Columbia — Houston’s Dom Capers and Carolina’s John Fox — were not disappointed.

“I think he had an excellent workout,” Capers said. “He caught the ball well, tested very well in the cone drills here. So it was basically what you would expect him to do.”

Added Fox: “More of us look at what he does on the football field. This other stuff is just things you write down on paper. He’s had a good career, and that’s what’s going to make him the money.”

After leading the SEC in receiving yards per game (75.9) and receiving touchdowns (seven) in 2004, Williamson was mulling his future in the midst of a USC coaching change. New coach Steve Spurrier talked about the dizzying numbers Williamson could put up in his Fun ’n’ Gun offense, but Williamson decided to chase his NFL dream.

There has been no second-guessing.

“I knew I made the right decision back then,” Williamson said. “I’m not just going to jump out and not know what’s good for me and having everybody else criticize me for coming out. I’m my own person. I make my own decisions. I believe I’ll do myself right.”

Williamson said playing in Lou Holtz’s buttoned-up offense has not hurt his prospects.

“People have me rated high right now regardless of what kind of offense I played in,” he said. “It don’t matter now. I’m done with playing football at USC. It’s time for me to set other goals and accomplish other stuff.”

Williamson has been living and training in Miami with several of his USC teammates, including defensive tackle Darrell Shropshire and linebackers Marcus Lawrence and Rod Wilson. He has followed the spate of off-the-field problems that have dogged the Game*censored*s since January and thinks the players involved acted foolishly.

“They should be smart because Spurrier came in and said he ain’t tolerating nothing,” Williamson said. “When you go and mess up like that, you don’t do nothing but ask for it.”

Williamson said his ex-teammates should realize they are “not going to be able to play football forever, so get the opportunity now and make the best of it.”

Hmm Carolina and Texans I smell some sort of Deal in the works between us and Carolina. Maybe something like the Eli Rivers deal of a year ago?

I know there is only 1 pick difference but where was 15 and down? Intersting read though I still don't believe we draft the kid.

I think if we were to trade down with Carolina, we'd probably only get a 3rd, unless they do something stupid like the Browns did last year to get Winslow...Then, with 3 3rd rounders, we could probably package two of those to move back into the 2nd round...

“I think he had an excellent workout,” Capers said. “He caught the ball well, tested very well in the cone drills here. So it was basically what you would expect him to do.”

he doesnt sound too impressed to me. "what you would expect him to do" does not sound like "a steal at #13"

I'd say the significant piece of info was not what he said, but his actions in being one of two head coaches at the kid's workout.

Capers being there for his workout does mean something... but the problem is there is no way to know what it means.

He didn't sound super excited about the workout... But that doesn't mean anything. If Capers wanted to take him would he run off at the mouth about how great he is... so that other coaches take notice.

And the fact that he was there doesn't really mean he wants to take him. It may be he was just curious... Or it could mean he wants some lower team to think he wants to take him... so they will trade up the the Texans to get Williamson.

This time of year what a coach says and which players he sees really can mean anything. We will only know what it really meant after the draft.

We could have also been looking at ILB Marcus Lawrence, DT Darrel Shropshire, and DE/possible OLB tweener George Gause

That's pretty smooth of Capers showing up to show the Panthers it's going to cost them if they want him. Doesn't sound like he had the best poker face "he did what you would expect him to do". You know Fox is sly enough to know we aren't serious competition for him. Dom should of been doing cartwheels but who knows this draft is so deep if we can pick up an extra 3rd or better to move down 5-10 spots I think that would be a sweet deal. Probably not the Panthers but hopefully somebody else. Where's Cleveland's old GM these days?

A head coach isn't going to show up for a pro day just to look at mid round picks. He's there to look at the top rated prospects, or to make other teams think he's looking at the top rated prospects. Is the Texans interest in Williamson real or a smoke screen? Who knows?

whenever a head coach or GM personally attend a workout session it expresses interest. what means more is when they are impressed enough to invite that prospect to Houston for a private showing and medical evaluation. I had a source last year that knew who they brought in to workout and how well they did, this year hopefully we have some one else with inside information who can inform us of who, where, what & when the Texans bring the guys they are really serious about in to test.

I don't think it's that telling either way. Sure it might be a smoke screen, but I'd also expect DC and CC to look at all the quality talent that is likely to be available at #13.

I think Capers was very interested in Williamson, and he is there becuase we have a real chance to get him. If he thinks like alot of us and believes thinks that we dont need a top LT, and we cant trade up for DJ, then another top target for Carr makes a lot of since at #13, especially since this kid can run a 4.38, man thats speed.

we lost 9 games and here is the defcit from each game
by 3 1 game
by 7 2 games
by 8 1 game
by 9 1 game
by 12 1 game
by 18 1 game
by 22 1 game
by 35 1 game

If Bradford handt of underacheived how many of those games we could of won or made closer. Lets look at this way i think a good #2 i remind you if Barron is not on the board... that we could of have an extra 7-10 points a game.. thats possibility of going 10-6 and almost winning 2 games by 2 points... think about something like that.... plus imagine if Johnson gets man coverage bc Bradford does his job how many more yards he would of had.

Some say when a position is as deep in the draft as the wr position is this year to wait a round or two before picking. I say no. Reason being, why settle for a good one when you can get a great one early? Troy Williamson is moving up my list of people I want wearing a Texans helmet next year.

1) We grab David Pollack after trading down

2) We grab Troy Williamson at 13

3) We grab DJ after trading up

DJ would be #1, but the more I think about it...The more I think trading up is not good in a draft this deep.

I have to disagree. Williamson is quite talented, but he does not run precise routes, and route running is what makes great receivers. Look at Mark Clayton to be the Anquan Boldin, Lee Evans, or Michael Clayton in this draft.

well i'm only going to mention this once i reference to williamson...if you look at all the legal problems the players from south carolina this year have done i would be a little hesitant to draft him without carefully going through is closet...if any of ya'll saw the espn interview with steve spurrier you would know that 9 on the returning players for south carolina have committed felonies...while i know d. rob was a gamecock and hasn't shown that kind of behavior it's still something to look at...especially when this kid is only getting looked at due to his speed not recieving skills

I can understand your concerns, but generally most of the top picks in the first round are thoroughly scrutinized by NFL GMs and Head Coaches. Adrian McPhearson was asked by nearly every GM/HC that interviewd him at the combine about his situation at FSU. Willamson isn't being courted just for his speed. I believe he led the SEC in receiving yards per game and receiving TDs in a season. You have to have decent hands to lead a conference like the SEC in those two receiving categories. He played in a fairly conservative offense, and if he'd stayed another year to play in Spurrier's fun and gun you'd likely see his numbers explode. He needs to improve his route running, and just about every receiver has a few things they need to improve upon. Williamson is a bit of an unfinished product, but the sheer talent and potential he has is also what is propelling his stock upwards. His speed is just an added benefit.

No doubt Mark Clayton is the most polished and qualified of these two and always will be. Nothing can change my mind on this how can 5/100ths of a second mean anything I saw Williamson at what 4.38 and Clayton at 4.4 more like 2/100ths difference. Clayton might be a little smallish ever heard of Steve Largent. Precision cuts and routes, fearless across the middle, no drops ever, an absolute sure thing. Williamson on the other hand the hype is mind boggling maybe he'll be solid oneday but he's the Reggie Williams of this draft. Lee Evans at #12 looked skeptical last year but he's already past Moulds and Clayton is a similar player maybe a step slower. I doubt we'll go offense at #13 but if so I would not be disappointed with Clayton.

I realize the guy has played WR for all of his college career but you know we would be using a 13th overall pick to get this guy while Matt Jones, the QB/WR from Arkansas, put up these numbers at the combine:

4.37 in the 40-yard dash … 2.49 20-yard dash … 1.50 10-yard dash … 39½-inch vertical jump … 10-foot-3 broad jump … 33 1/8-inch arm length … 9½-inch hands … Right-handed.

He is also 6'6" tall and weighs 242 lbs. I know we have some 5'10"ish corners w/ 40-something verticle leaps, but this guy outweighs them buy 50 pounds so I doubt they can get the ball away from him. He also isn't going to go in the first round. I bet he won't be seriously looked at until the 3rd round. With his physical ability, we could play him at WR/TE or I'm thinking even some outside pass rushing linebacker. How many offensive tackles are going to jump early with this guy lined up off their outside shoulder?

Then we could use our 13th pick on what I think is a more pressing need - a LT - either through the draft if somehow FL States Tackle falls to us, or via a trade of some type. WE NEED a legitimate LT.

People talk about his hands, but Andre had the "hands-knock" when he was coming out as well, though I don't think it was as much of a concern as with Williamson (maybe someone remembers better than me)

When is the draft? April 20-something? I was up playing madden franchise until 6:45 in the morning the other day, went to sleep for about 6 hours, got up, and played some more. And that's without playing the games, just simulating the seasons....sad but true.

The draft can't get here soon enough.

I think Pollack is an Overacheiver kinda like a Chris Hovan who was released by Viks..... I have Pollack slipping to the 20's on my draft board and possibile going 2nd round. He stock has been dropping to #7 of DE. Williamson has improved his stock so much if the draft goes right he could #7 to Viks. Weird huh i thought so when i heard it too. It makes soo much since to me now though.
Other Option is Alex Barron, Kaliff Barnes whose stock is rising fast. and Jamaal Brown... to protect Carr and sit wand... Those are 2 choices for 1st round.

This can happen.. Clayton stock is right behind Williamson's... We need the WR to draw the double coverage from Andre Johnson.... Do i think both can do it.... Yes.... I think Williamson might have a better chance (my opinion) I think Clayton will either go one way or the other and turn out to be a #1 or a #3 like Gaffney.

Isn't the knock on Williamson is that he is a big, fast WR who runs bad routes and drops balls? Sounds like Bradford to me. Don't get me wrong, I am not dissing him just asking.
