PRO TIMING DAY AT USC
Williamson fast becoming a scout favorite

A bevy of NFL scouts and a couple of head coaches descended on USCs indoor practice facility Wednesday for the Game*censored*s annual pro timing day. While 16 seniors from the 2004 team came out to be evaluated, it was evident that all eyes and handheld timing devices were on the lone junior in the bunch wide receiver Troy Williamson.
Since announcing in December that he would forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft, Williamsons stock has risen as his 40-yard dash times have fallen. The Jackson native ran the 40 in 4.38 seconds at the February combine in Indianapolis, vaulting him into the first round in the mock drafts of most experts.
ESPNs Mel Kiper projects Williamson as the 16th overall pick, calling the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder the fastest receiver in the draft.
Williamsons Indy time was fast enough that he chose not to run the 40 again Wednesday. Instead, he spent the day doing shuttle drills, running routes and catching passes. And when the proceedings wrapped up, many of the two dozen scouts in attendance made a beeline to Williamson to shake his hand and congratulate him on a good showing.
Its just coming out to work, Williamson said as he changed out of his cleats. I feel like I came out to work in Indy and came out to work right now, regardless if I had two dropped balls or whatever. Im always ready to work.
The two NFL head coaches who made the trip to Columbia Houstons Dom Capers and Carolinas John Fox were not disappointed.
I think he had an excellent workout, Capers said. He caught the ball well, tested very well in the cone drills here. So it was basically what you would expect him to do.
Added Fox: More of us look at what he does on the football field. This other stuff is just things you write down on paper. Hes had a good career, and thats whats going to make him the money.
After leading the SEC in receiving yards per game (75.9) and receiving touchdowns (seven) in 2004, Williamson was mulling his future in the midst of a USC coaching change. New coach Steve Spurrier talked about the dizzying numbers Williamson could put up in his Fun n Gun offense, but Williamson decided to chase his NFL dream.
There has been no second-guessing.
I knew I made the right decision back then, Williamson said. Im not just going to jump out and not know whats good for me and having everybody else criticize me for coming out. Im my own person. I make my own decisions. I believe Ill do myself right.
Williamson said playing in Lou Holtzs buttoned-up offense has not hurt his prospects.
People have me rated high right now regardless of what kind of offense I played in, he said. It dont matter now. Im done with playing football at USC. Its time for me to set other goals and accomplish other stuff.
Williamson has been living and training in Miami with several of his USC teammates, including defensive tackle Darrell Shropshire and linebackers Marcus Lawrence and Rod Wilson. He has followed the spate of off-the-field problems that have dogged the Game*censored*s since January and thinks the players involved acted foolishly.
They should be smart because Spurrier came in and said he aint tolerating nothing, Williamson said. When you go and mess up like that, you dont do nothing but ask for it.
Williamson said his ex-teammates should realize they are not going to be able to play football forever, so get the opportunity now and make the best of it.
