What happened to the Chicago Bears??

They used to have "the best" defense in the league. They didn't need an offense to win games. But now....

They gave up 354 yards per game. 123 ypg on the ground. 232 in the air.

I know they lost Tank Johnson. But who else??

Would you give Lance Briggs a big contract, based on the way the defense performed last season??
 
The Tampa-2 isn't what it used to be.

Plus, to run the system, you need good, hard-hitting safties, and the Bears don't have them

Agreed.

IMO the Bears are heading for some tough seasons ahead. A number of things just aren't adding up on that team. I love the Bears defense and I hope they can stay afloat despite an absence of real talent on the offensive side of the ball.

Its run in a bunch of places outside the first two and has been complete pants (Bears and Lions to name a few). The Tampa 2 is designed to play with a lead, not come from behind. Bears offense sucks, opponents get on the scoreboard, Tampa-2 sucks. The Bears D is much better against the pass than the run

The bustyness of Cedric Benson and the lack of a good pair of safties also destroyed the Bears. Mike Brown was key to the success.

So what part of this makes the defensive scheme itself less effective than it used to be?
 
I expect the Bears will get a top 10 pick in next year's NFL Draft. Their offense will be even worse this year than it was last year. Hopefully for them they can rebuild their offense over the next 2 seasons, before their defense falls apart.

QFT. Urlacher might be the heart and soul of that defense but it really relied on Mike Brown to be successful. Injuries got to them bad last year and couple that with an ineffective offense that couldn't run the ball like when they went to the SB.

They drafted Forte in the second to revamp the running game and Added Steltz in the secondary(Josh Gattis is on the roster page atm too).I think we'll see a return to a dominant Defense this year and Kyle Orton will be the starting QB come 1st game of the season.

The biggest problem to me was the decision not to resign defensive coordinator Ron Rivera who was replaced by LB coach Bob Babich and just about an entire new staff on defense....sure the bears had a great defense in 2006, but that was 2006 and it just goes to show how close all the NFL teams are in talent. You flip your entire coaching staff on one side of the ball and good things are not always going to follow right away - especially when you lose a top coach like Rivera. Also, the tampa2 is fine...more teams use those concepts now than ever (middle linebackers keep getting smaller and quicker). Urlacher is a freak of nature though.
