Strahan calls it quits

Might as well end your career on a high note. He's got plenty of opportunities for a career on TV although it will be hard to have to look at that gap between his teeth during the pre-game show.

It was inevitable, since Favre isn't around to give him sacks, INTs, etc.

:splits:

Mark Gastineau and Deacon Jones think Favre and Strahan are punks.

That was a rather pathetic way to break the single season sack record.

But you can't really blame Strahan for that. It was Favre who took the dive.

Didn't Vince curl up like a little kitten and give Mario a gimme sack, last season? That's not on Mario, I'm sure he would have preferred to drive Young into the ground. I'm counting that as a sack, and I'll let Strahan keep his.

I agree. Favre did Strahan one final favor in the playoffs this past season, throwing the game-losing INT. So Strahan would definitely have missed Favre had he continued playing ;)

He was still one of the most feared pass rushers of our era regardless of your take on him. If Mario can turn out to be the way Strahan was, Houston fans will have alot to cheer for over the next several years !!

I don't disagree with you, and I've never advocated an asterisk by Strahan's record. It is what it is.

But, my statement still stands, that as sacks (and records) go, that was a cheesy way to set such a worthy halmark. Deacon Jones said he would have laid the wood on Favre to make him appreciate the record and pay for taking a dive without so much as a whimper of resistance. But Deacon was ruthless that way, so I'd never compare any of today's players to his mean streak.

If the inventor of the head slap said it, I believe it. But in today's game, Deacon would have lost the sack & picked up a 15-yard personal foul penalty. Different times, different approach.

Deacon was more upset because he thought that the record setting sack should have been earned the hard way.

Favre gave that one to Strahan. With less than 4 minutes left in the season, he took a dive to give his old friend the record.

Now, I'm not saying that Strahan isn't one of the best pass rushers around, or that he doesn't deserve the record, but it is a bit punk to just give someone such a prestigious record. That is Deacon's point. Nothing should be free and easy in the NFL, and Favre/Strahan broke that unwritten rule.

Well I can't fault Strahan for that, I mean Brett was the one who actually laid down. Even if he Strahan knew it was going to happen, Favre was the one who made it happen, as he could have easily decided NOT to do it and make MS earn it, or someone else could have touched Favre first and taken the sack...Either way, it was a lame way to get a record, but most of the blame, if not all has to go to Favre, MS just completed the deal.

Like I've said, I do not disagree with this take. A sack is a sack. But it did have some suspicion around it the week before the game...

Favre, who joked during the week that he might "work out a little side deal" with Strahan to allow him to get the record, called a run in the huddle, teammates said.

It was this playful attitude, along with falling down at 2:42 in the last game, that led some to speculate that the two had made a deal prior to the game.

But, it's his record, so it is what it is. Hopefully Mario will break it soon. :fans:

I didn't realize that, or had forgotten. Good find. That sack is smelly.

After just watching that play, it had to have been called a run, as the TE, Bubba Franks just let MS go around him on the outside and he was on top of a falling Favre in 2 seconds...So it had to be a run for Bubba Franks to have let MS get thru him untouched, unless Favre said something to him about the "deal" before the play....
Regardless, Strahan was a true player and there are not that many before him that can actually be said to have been better at his position.

yep, he's certainly in the top 10 pass rushers of NFL history, IMO.

Which is kind of funny, because NFL Network had a recent show called "Top 10 Pass Rushers", and many on the list kinda' poked fun at Strahan and his record (especially Deacon).

It's all good, though. Records are made to be broken, and that's why it'll be that much sweeter when our boy Mario sets the new one!

I really don't see it being broken, aside from the fact that most all records do fall at some point, but I'd really like to see Mario take Derrick Thomas' single-game sack record - in a division game :)
