Rick Stroud, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would likely place the franchise tag on QB Jeff Garcia for the 2009 season if they can't come to an agreement on a contract extension. Garcia can become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.

The funny thing is that Gruden is the only coach that could form a 53 QB roster and fail to find a solid starter. Jeff Garcia is the closest thing they have had in forever. Gruden seems to have an infatuation with sub-par/past their prime QBs.

I think you'll find that Gruden doesn't want to find a great QB. Somewhere deep in the cockles of his heart, or maybe lower than that in the sub-cockles, he knows that if you have Peyton Manning as your QB then he won't get all the credit for being a QB guru because its Peyton Manning. On the other hand if you take Jeff Garcia, Chris Simms, Brian Griese, David Carr and turn turn out a good offense you as the coach looks like a genius.

On some level I reckon that Gruden wants to be seen as a genius, every night when he goes to sleep he has nightmares of a man in a grey hoodie steaing his thunder...
