Will Chris Brown start??

After reading Kubiak’s OTA quotes regarding the running back situation I am more convinced that Chris Brown will be our starting back come the regular season.

He refers to Slaton and Green as change of pace backs which speaks to me that he sees Brown and Walker as the horses in our offense.

Kubiak said:
(on what a bigger back like RB Chris Brown does) “Well, let me answer that a little different. I think the fact that we may have a changeup back now helps those big backs. Ahman (Green) gives you the ability for the big play, but if the young kid (Steve Slaton) that we drafted can do the same thing, then I think big kids like Chris (Brown) and then Darius (Walker) is a big, thick kid; they’re hard to tackle. You would like to have a little bit of both, and I think if we can keep Ahman and Slaton healthy, we have an opportunity to have a changeup player.”

Thoughts??

lol only a Texanstalk poster could read that quote and think Kubiak is implying Brown and Taylor as the horses of our offense. Where does he even mention Taylor?

To me that says: Chris Brown and Ahman Green are our work horses, while Slaton and Walker are the backups.

It screams "Taylor isn't going to make this team" He didn't even mention him...

My bad, I was on the phone at the time I was posting that and got the RB's mixed up.

I guess I am making assumptions based off semantics. A change of pace back to me implies you bring them in every now and then when you want something different. I would be disappointed if we paid out the wahoo for a part time RB in Green.

One could possibly read into that quote that Brown will start and Walker will back him up and that Green and Slaton will be the "change of pace" / third down guys.

Contracts/Experience say that Green and Brown will start and Walker/Slaton will be the "change of pace" guys.

It is interesting that Taylor wasn't mentioned until specifically asked about as possibly being a FB.

I'm afraid Abbate might be the odd man out if we keep only 1 FB. We know Leach is the starter and Cook does fairly well on S/Ts so that may be how he keeps a job.

I think this points to the possibility of Ahman Green getting cut, as it is basically pointing out that the younger Slaton is geared to do what Green was originally signed to do. If Green should get the boot, I think that would make Brown a lock for the starting position. As for Taylor, I agree with gtexan. Considering how "high" Kubiak has been on Taylor in the past...it's not a good sign for Chris that he wasn't even mentioned by Kubiak when discussing the RB situation. Only time will tell I suppose, I would just like to see Slaton get some snaps this season.

I hope that's not true, frankly I don't want to carry Ahman Green on the roster just, because he's "Ahman Green", the guy has one year MAX (if even that) left and I'd rather the spot go to a young back who has promise.

Kubiak is probably reading this board and laughing his head off. Why don't we just wait until after training camp if and a the preseason games are over before we start to speculate and read into everything that is said by the coaching staff. I know everyone is anxious but we will have answers to all our questions soon enough.:mshadows:

Yeh the Walkers bieng refered to as one of the big guys threw me for a loop. I think maybe he meant Taylor (5' 11" and 220 lbs.)

As for not metioning Taylor in this quote if he didn't mean Taylor in the first place, everything I read said that Taylor is worked out really hard and is in ridiculously good shape and has been working hard.

I can't imagine Chris Taylor not making this team.

Wears the fun on that, every nugget of football thrown around is gold and to be leaped on and analysed to death.

Agreed. Although I'd keep Green (Paying for him anyways) and find a spot for Taylor (Youth = future)

i'm usually backwards so that's likely here also, but i read it in reverse as chris brown would be the change of pace guy similar to dayne. green and slaton would be our starters with brown coming in to do the heavy lifting late in games or depending on down & distance.

Why don't you just get a Texans related avatar?

:jk: ........well, sort of :)

And I am going to speculate that our annual injury parade will make ALL of our running backs a starter at some point. Practice squad is an option for 2 or 3 of our running backs--Has Darius played in too many games to go PS? So, we can carry Brown and Green...and one other...on the true roster without actually "letting go" of the others. I think last year's situation scared Kubiak enough to realize that he'd better have a deep shelf on RBs.

So there's no need, IMO, to even really "care" about who is dubbed the starter. Not trying to be ugly about it. Just logical.

AND I'll also speculate that at some point the Texans front office sends out a search team to all the Whataburgers and Golden Corrals looking for Ron Dayne. It's just gonna' happen. Wait and see. LOL. Oh, the humanity!!!!!

To me that says: Chris Brown and Ahman Green are our work horses, while Slaton and Walker are the backups.

And that's the way it will be unless Slaton or Walker show something extremely impressive when they finally do get to touch the ball. But we all know the probablilites of injury at the position of RB and the two 'old guys' have a history of short seasons so...

Based on that, Slaton and Walker better be ready.

Now, repeat after me...we're gonna have a running game...we're gonna have a running game...we're gonna have a running game...we're gonna have a running game...FINALLY!

The problem with the "TT love" that Taylor gets is that its completely unfounded.

For all we know, he is a workout warrior. He looks great in training camp, preseason games, and meaningless, end of the year games against horrible teams (Cleveland ala 2006?)

He was out for an entire year after having no starting experience.

I"d love for him to be the guy we all want him to be, but Im not holding out hope. I'd rather keep Walker, a guy we KNOW can get it done in the NFL, than speculate on an unproven commodity with a serious injury in his recent past

Endles speculation. It is just way too soon to know who will be our starting RB. Who knows, Kubiak may run 'em in and out (Green & Brown), like musical chairs. OR......??????

my personal opinion of Walker was one of being impressed last year. He came out of college a bit early and had some downs, but showed he could be a RB in the NFL last year. He did fairly well at the end of the season and I wouldn't mind seeing what the Klingon can do.

I couldn't even begin to know who will be the starting RB or the backup at this point in time. All I know is there is going to be some good competition in camp this year in alot of different positions, and we will see some good players get cut and play for other teams. Just another step to building this team into a great team. More good things to come!:yahoo: JMHO!

I think the starter will be "whomever isn't injured". If nobody is injured, then it'll probably be Ahman Green, because as much as most of you people hate to admit it, he looked good when he wasn't hurt (vs KC).

I don't think he's going to last very long though and then it'll be Chris Brown for a few weeks. I think June 1st cuts could be surprising.

Agreed on whomever isn't hurt starting.

Actually, even when he was pretty hurt, Green looked good.

My favorite run of his last year, and evidence of how bad the Raiders run defense is, is where he basically sauntered into the end zone. He saw where the holes were, and kinda shuffled into the end zone after he sorta hurt himself earlier on a long run. That TD run was soooooooo slow, he just picked his way through.

I would love to see a healthy Green. But a lot of Texans RBs have to survive our camp.
