Trippin’ Tuesday: Urlacher to skip minicamp?

Brian Urlacher says his arthritic back feels great and his surgically repaired neck is fine. However, don’t expect Urlacher to get his mind right until the star middle linebacker’s contract dispute with the Chicago Bears is resolved.

rlacher, who has four years remaining on the nine-year, $56.5-million contract extension he signed in 2003, realizes that his stance is not a popular one. But the six-time Pro Bowl performer, who was the NFL’s defensive player of the year in 2005, believes he has outperformed his deal and is frustrated that he’s no longer the highest-paid player on his team. According to NFLPA documents, eight Bears earned more than he did last season.

“It’s easy for people to criticize me for wanting (a new deal), and I understand that it’s a contract and I signed it,” Urlacher said. “But this is the NFL, and if I’d signed it and I’d played like (expletive), they’d have cut me or tried to get me to take less. In my mind, there’s no difference. If they can ‘break’ a contract, I have a right to ask for more if I play well enough.

“When I signed my deal the salary cap was $75 million. It’s, what, $116 million now? Things have changed.

IMO, he wants the guarranteed because he's unsure how much longer he's going to be able to play. Back and neck injuries aren't injuries to f--- around with.

I like Urlacher, but from what I gather, Chicago's been kind of stingy with their dough. I'm not so sure he's going to "get paid" like he wants.

He's not the highest paid LB on the team because he's not the best LB on the team. Briggs is better and Hillenmeyer is on his way up. If I were the Bears I'd draw the line in the sand.

Urlacher has zero leverage.....it's not like he's in a contract year, he has 4 years remaining on the contract. Chicago just needs to remind him that they got his balls in a vise and he either needs to show up and play or retire. If Chicago lets Urlacher out of his contract when he's only played through half of it, it's going to screw over front offices everywhere.

I get a little tired of hearing guys wanting out of their contracts so they can get a new one with more money. Don't sign long contracts like that. Yes his contract is out dated, but that is his own fault. Every year you hear about players complaining about being franchised even though they get the average of the top five players at their position. Why do they complain? It's because they don't have the security that they would get with a long term contract. So they sign long term contracts that gives them security and now they complain about their contracts being outdated. Can't have it both ways. It's not all players, but a lot of them and frankly I don't want to hear it.

Urlacher's whining is an example of someone wanting their cake and eating it too. He wanted the longterm deal for security so he signs it then whines when the contract is no longer at the top of the LB stratosphere halfway into his deal. Similar to Chad Johnson's whining. He has been the highest paid WR in the league the last 2 years but finally when the deal begins to pay off for the club after the Bengals bit the bullet...Chad wants out and claims he is underpaid. CJ may be a bigger jerk about it, but they are doing the same thing. Urlacher and CJ both need to grow up and collect their multi-million dollar salaries and STFU. One day I am looking forward to around 2020 is when its time for Chad Johnson to be considered for Hall Of Fame enshrinement and the guy is left on the outside looking in. That guy isn't even going to get a sniff...especially with his act the last year and a half. I can't wait to see him get punked.
