Something interesting about the Texans late round picks

Under Smithiak. In the last 3 seasons our 6th/7th round picks have been:

Wali Lundy - Set a record at UVA or maybe it was the ACC as a whole for tds in college

David Anderson - Very productive WR at Colorado State earning all conference honors all 3 years he started

Kasey Studdard- All big 12 OL junior/senior year and team captain his senior year at UT

Zach Diles - 2 time all big 12 LB ultraproductive making 149 tackles his last year at K-State

Dominique Barber - All Big 10 team Safety after making over 100 tackles his last year at UM.

Alex Brink - Career leader in yards/tds as qb at WSU

What this tells me is that the Texans look for highly productive players in the late rounds who may not have the measurables teams look for. So far with our 1st round picks we picked up productive players with very good measurables and very high ceilings that some teams may have considered "projects" at the time of the draft. But with the 6th/7th round picks it seems we're looking for guys that know how to produce despite not being as athletic as their early round counterparts.

Just something to look for in the upcoming drafts under Smithiak, look for the productive college players that slipped due to their measurables in the 6th/7th round that may stick with the team due to their ability to produce regardless of how athletic they are compared to the other players.

Thus far none of these guys have really stepped up and made big contributions for the Texans, but Zach Diles is currently slated to be a starting OLB in the 09 season.
 
Good research and opinion. I would surmise that although these folks may not be starters, or even make the team, they certainly bring a resume of success, in role, to the table at training camp thereby pushing the competitive nature of the camp itself.

Agreed, you can even look back at the UDFAs. As an example our highest impact UDFA last season was Darius Walker, a highly productive RB at Notre Dame who was also the career receptions by a RB leader at ND.

Our two UDFAs with the best chance of making the team imo this season were Grice-Mullins and Ben Moffitt. Grice was very productive at Hawaii and Moffitt was described as the "heart and soul of South Florida's defense" and was a tackling machine at USF.

Try hard guys.

I've been on teams comprised mostly of try-hard guys who have won despite playing against people who were superior athletes. They do it through team work and smarts.

They also fit in the Texans locker room. They want true believers and those who love the game.

I think Moffit does have a good chance to make the roster. Grice_Mullins is going to have a much harder time considering our sudden depth at WR.
 
I think Moffitt is a guy that should make the team somehow. The few games I watched last season of South Florida- I kept seeing this guy all over the field.

I think he could be a good young back up to have and let him play on special teams a lot. Kind of like Diles last year.

6th rounder Barber sounds like he's going to be a great player to have on special teams as well.

He's a Cowboy, but classic example is Bill Bates--I believe longest tenured Cowboy ever and last survivor of the Landry era.

No doubt. This is very similar to the Bill Walsh philosophy of ALL members of the team contributing to the cause. He looked for measurables that go beyond the combine stats, and sometimes it comes down to something as simple as a coach's 'gut feeling' about a player. Heart and drive can often account for more of a given player's success than how fast they can run or far they can jump.

This philosophy with Kubiak's staff is not a surprise, considering the coaching tree.

Didn't Warren Moon play for same school as our 7th pick? I think Moon threw for a few yard in college.
