Running back Steve Slaton, a third-round pick out of West Virginia, has been a popular pick among draft pundits and Texans fans. Both parties have said Slaton could make a tremendous impact his rookie season. Here’s what the ball carrier had to say about coming to Houston:

1. Has it sunk in that you are a Texan and will be reporting to your first pro minicamp on May 9?

“I think it will hit me more when I’m on the plane ride. I know that I’m a Texan, but I won’t know what that’s like until I get to Houston and get on that field.”

2. What do you think will be the hardest part of transitioning from college football to the NFL?

“I think it’s knowing that everybody is after your job, that everybody wants that spot. And, now, everybody is the best of the best.”

9. What is the first thing you are going buy as a pro?

“I’m going to need to buy a condo. I’m going to need a place to stay!”

OK, I like this guy. Why ? He's a very practical and realistic young man.
When asked the first thing he wanted to buy, he didn't say some wheels,
or blink, or 5 new suits. He's going to a new place, a new town and he knows
most of all he'll need a roof over his head in this far-away place.
He's got his priorities in the right order. Good answer.

I also like that West Virginia used a ZBS system while he was there. I wasn't aware of that.

he talked about contact like he looks for it. I'm hoping he means that and he will be more like westbrook than bush. In college you can get away with that avoid the contact and run for the open style, it doesnt usually work in the pros. I think at the very least he will be an excellent change of pace back who can also catch some balls on 3rd down.

I downloaded the Louisville game from the 07 and I've only seen about 3 series or so, but I'm impressed, he's definitely not a Reggie Bush-type player. He's not afraid to hit and from what I saw, corners never tackle him one-on-one without help. Reggie Bush is a poor man's Slaton.

Could you PM me info on where you got it from?

This guy kind of reminds me of DW. DW was supposed to be a 3rd down back but became our best back. I really miss him and hope Slaton CAN fill those shoes. I like his confidence about mismatches with backers and corners. If we can get him into the second tier I bet he'll make some great runs out of everyday plays.

never imagined him being a texan pre draft but I'm excited about it, hopefully we'll have to hold our breath when he touches the ball

I see it a little too, but DW was just a tad too slow to make the big one. he got tackled from behind alot. just imagine if half those times he broke away, I think thats what Slaton can give us. eventually
