Saturday and Sunday should have been even more epic for Kansas, if not for the unfortunate flaws of the NFL Draft system.

In the months and weeks leading up to the draft, analysts picked apart Kansas cornerback Aqib Talib. Experts lambasted his tendency to take risks in coverage, second-guessed his ability to make tackles at the line of scrimmage, and questioned his speed based on one piece of film - Kansas State receiver Jordy Nelson’s infamous torching of Talib.

When published reports said Talib had failed three drug tests during his Kansas career, draft prospectors panicked. Scouts and talking heads latched asterisks and red flags to Talib’s name just because the star cornerback told NFL team personnel the truth: He used marijuana more than two years ago, and had since changed his habits.

Talib didn’t find his way into the top 10 picks. Instead, he fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the 20th pick, and wasn’t even the first cornerback taken.

I'm surprised he went that high. I wouldn't have touched him until rd 3 myself, although he does seem to be a perfect fit for the cover 2 type scheme. I'm not that high on him (no pun intended), but we'll see.
 
Well, he got selected as a top 20 pick with all those 'red flags' and such, they should be happy. Even if he had a perferct record, chances are it still could have happened all the same with McKelvin and Cromartie going before him- Jenkins was the one that slipped more.

Another thing that sounds like it hurt him is his attitude being really cocky and thinking he's better than everyone. Maybe if he would have dropped that 2 years ago, it would have helped?
 
I'm not sure why you mentioned my name with this at all, as I really have nothing to do with it.

But, since you did, you forgot this:

As a refresher, Talib is long (6-foot-2), sturdy (202 pounds), speedy (4.45 second 40-yard dash) and uber-athletic (10-feet, 11-inch broad jump). For what it’s worth, he was also a consensus first team All-America selection, the Orange Bowl MVP and an All-Big 12 first team selection.

The fans who packed Memorial Stadium to see Talib can vouch for his talent, and Kansas coach Mark Mangino served as a valuable character witness for his star early in the 2007 season.

“He’s developed some good, strong leadership qualities that we were hoping for,” Mangino said. “He had to grow as a person and mature as a person, and he’s done that.”

Everyone is reacting like this just happened this season. This entire issue was at the beginning of his college career, and while that doesn't make it any better, it was two years ago. So, yes pete, let's only focus on one aspect from two years ago and ignore the success and positives in those two years since. That makes sense. Man, you should be paid to think critically.
 
On another note, he wasn't my top CB. I'm not some biased fan who choses not to see flaws. I looked at his game objectively. He wasn't the top CB, but he was still a first round talent and I guess the NFL thinks so as well pete. You might want to check your mail, I think the NFL is coming after your scouting services. :mail:

So he's been clean for 2 years and has stayed out of trouble? Is that what you are implying?
 
Warren Sapp smoked pot in college & he had a HOF career.

With that said I'm glad we took Brown.

they're kids. A lot of them away from home for the first time. Sure some of them screwed up in some fashion or another. Ask Roger Clemons if anyone is squeeky clean.

I go to the University of Kansas, and yea, that is what I'm implying. I'm not best friends with him, but he has been a good character person around campus, especially since the birth of his daughter.
 
I doubt he's been clean for two years...

Don't know about him being in trouble, but I doubt he hasn't smoked in two years...
 
Well YTF got to see him play much more than most of us. He liked what he saw, about Talib's onfield play. I think what YTF had to do more than anything was defend a player he liked and thought was good, and would be good in the pros. I liked what I saw in the limited views of actual game I saw Talib in, but thought other CB's would be better for this team.

In the end Talib got draft 20th overall in the 1st round. So maybe we can make fun of YTF for going to the same school, or saying this player is good... but I think he has a little something to come back at those that try that, "With the 20th selection in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Tamba Bay Buccaneers select, Aqib Talib, CB from University of Kansas."

Unfortunately we don't have the luxury of knowing about players backgrounds, drug tests, etc like NFL teams get to find out. During the 2007 college season, how many of us were talking about McFadden's 18 kids, Talib being a pothead, Mendenhall being a wimp, etc. None of us.

Sorry if this sounds like a rant (it's not intended to at all- glad he isn't a texan) but all I remember YTF saying is that he's a good football player (which seems TB thinks he is too). :)
