Starters out of this draft?

If your talking next year, as in immediate; none. If you are talking about in year two, three so far.

How many 08' starters do you think we have drafted from this draft?
start of the year? zero.

end of the year? 1

Next year? 2-3

The OT starts by the eoy, Mouldin starts next season perhaps and Slaton isn't a feature back...he is a back along the lines of Norwood from the Falcons. Who knows about the new undersized linebacker...he's awfully small (he's a tweener like Michael Boulware).

Honestly, i see 2 possible immediate. Of course Brown & i think Adibi could come on like Meco did in his rookie year & supplant Greenwood. Slaton & Mouldin could both turn out to be solid contributors.

Duane Brown - Starter
Antwaun Molden - Nickel package maybe, behind Freddie and Dunta
Steve Slaton - A member of our RB merry-go-round; 3rd down back
Xavier Adibi - Starter

Theres a chance that the Smithiak can find a DE who can fill in the right side.

I project 2-3 starters. We are getting more and more solid.

Adibi: 6-2", 236 LBS
Demeco: 6-1" 239 LBS

I wouldn't make too much of his size....

It's not the size of the dog in the fight....

I love the defense that we are building. Small, quick guys who play bigger than they are. DeMeco, D-Rob and Adibi are examples of this.

a smallish lb crew combined with smallish interior tackles may = inability to stop the run. I'm not so worried about one smallish guy in a group but when the entire group is undersized thats when I have a bit more of a concern.

Especially since Meco's going to be playing in the middle...........

speed kills in the NFL evidenced by it's fascination with the 40 time, we're building a slightly smaller but faster than average defense, i like it.

Considering what I have seen out of all the players I listed as "undersized", I am not concerned about stopping the run. All of these guys are very good at wrapping up the ballcarrier, and that's really what the concern is about.

I can see Brown becoming a starter throughout the year, but I see Adibi taking an OLB job out of training camp. I thought he would be great in coverage and blitzing. I didn't think he was all that stout against the run though.

He's a TAD undersized, but so was Ryans, so I'm not worried about that. His run stopping does worry me.

This has been my fear. We talked about it in another thread.

If you've got smallish Mike, then you need bigger space eater DT's to protect them. If you've got "penetrator" DT's, then you need a bigger Mike. We've got penetrator DT's and a smallish Mike and that scares me for runs up the middle.

I'm hoping we pick up a power pig type of DT.

You think Richard Smith is trying to build a defense like the Colts that relies on the offense getting a lead early so it can make big plays and turnovers?

Probably not going to happen since we run a 4/3.

Maurice Murray, anyone?

Height: 6-3 1/4 | Weight: 334 | 40-Time: 5.10

Strengths:
Has excellent size and bulk with long arms...Is strong and powerful...Good speed and quickness...Plays with great pad level and leverage...Can penetrate and get pressure...Does a nice job against the run...Offers a lot of versatility...Has upside.

Weaknesses:
'Tweener who may be making a position change...Is not real explosive and lacks a burst to close...Motor runs hot and cold...Struggles when double teamed...Doesn't have great instincts...Not real stout at the point..Work ethic has been questioned.

Notes:
Transfer from Long Beach City College...Missed the entire '05 season with a staph infection in his knee...Played end in the Aggies 3-4 defense...Underrated prospect who could project to either tackle in a 4-3 scheme or end in a 3-4 at the pro level.

Seems like it...the old Jimmy Johnson Cowboy defense was built with smallish fast players who could run too...small and quick can make up for some bulk at times but the red zone and stopping teams in 3rd and short may be a really big problem. Size and strength goes a long way when fighting for short space.

I would expect that our personnel in short yardage situations would be different than our regular 1st and 10 set.

well sure since football is a strategy game but second and 1 on the 40 and you have to bring in different players or just give them the short run?....and when you bring in your lesser players teams pull up and throw over you.

True, true. I guess we'll just have to see how this pans out.

4/3 or 3/4 doesn't matter. Lots of 4/3 types of defenses have a combination of a space eater NT and a penetrating DT.

yeah you're right, but you mostly see those guys in 3-4 b/c they're size & bulk clogs crap up, Haynesworth, J. Williams, V. Wilfork.

How do you feel now?

I love the Okam pick.

He's an extremely bright kid so I expect him to be on the field making an impact against the run very soon into the season.

Somebody needs to light a fire under his ass on passing plays though. That lazy bs doesn't fly here.

Could Okam push Travis Johnson for a starting position?

With Okam you have a space eating, double-wide NT, and with Okoye you have a penetrator who gets an inordinately large number of sacks for a DT.

Okam takes the NT position. TJ moves over and backs up Amobi.

...and our D-line becomes that much better, assuming Okam gets some motivation. Add another DE to that (which is what I am hoping we get with the 6th rounder), and we could have a pretty solid line.

I think that pretty much Okam is going to be a rotational guy this whole year, unless he really shows a lot of motivation that he supposedly doesn't have. I think he can slowly work his way into being a starter by year 2 or 3.

EDIT: Rotational, or backup.

I could see just about everyone drafted so far (short of Barber) starting next season. All of our draft picks have addressed weaknesses, it wouldn't be surprising to see most of them on the field.

Opening day - 0 to 2

End of year - 1 to 4

Very good draft through 5 rounds. They blew the last two rounds imo, especially round 7. Tommy Blake, Jeremy Geathers, or Robertson, DE's who can rush the passer would have made much more sense.

I think we did a helluva job on addressing needs, other than a pass rusher at DE. Let's see what they can come up with in UDFA.
