Can Phillips play corner? I have seen him in a few mocks, but unless the coaching staff feels he can do man coverage I doubt he would be our man.

i feel, and have felt FS is a glaring need...and picking late, we won't have another opportunity to get the top in a class. i'd rather have the best fs than the like 8th best LT

Interesting mock. Not coming down on you, because everyone's got their views... but you say 8th best LT yet only 3 offensive lineman were taken before us. So really it'd be the top FS vs. the 4th best LT (assuming our top 3 were the ones taken). I think I've heard you say a similar thing: Top FS vs the 5th best LT or 5th best CB for example.

If the "8th best LT" is still rated higher than the top FS, you gotta go with the LT, because it fills just as big of a need with a 'better' player.

However, If Kenny Phillips is the highest rated player on our board when we're up, I'd presume we'd pick him!

Dude, seriously. You have us taking a 2nd round FS prospect over Chris Williams.

And besides, if we were to take a safety, it would be Tyrell Johnson and not Kenny Phillips. I haven't heard of the Texans showing any interest in Kenny(it doesn't mean they don't have any though), but Tyell on the otherhand, has gathered alot of attention from us.

yeah..but the trick to that is i don't have kenny phillips rated lowly at all. 8th best is an exaggeration, but I feel like KP is the best option for us at 18, unless for some ungodly reason mendenhall drops to us.

i haven't seen him graded as 2nd round anywhere. I don't like williams. Don't like any of the OT choices, and frankly i think sam baker is going to fall like a rock into the third round.

I think I felt like that last year..really wanted Landry last year. From what I have read with Demps and the other safeties we have it isn't as necessary as last year. I certainly don't think the coaching staff feels safety is a primary need.

I would love to see a Ronnie Lott laying waste to receivers and running backs, but I don't see it anytime soon.

the thing is...if we knew what our GM wanted right now...our GM would be doing a bad job at his job. Gotta work from the assumption that everything thats been leaked so far is a lie

I wonder about Phillips... seems sometimes a safety can "bring a secondary together" or make them better than they are aka Bob Sanders..

now I don't know if KP can do that but is interesting

besides isn't a safety the QB of the defense? or is it MLB?

saturday will tell but I trust our front office

KP isn't enough value for the 18th pick - you say you haven't seen him in the 2nd round, but virtually everything I've seen says late first, early 2nd, and that's not the 18th pick. If anything, I think he's overrated because he's the best of a weak crop and he's a safety from "The U".

Not many things about the Texans first round pick could disappoint me, but picking Phillips without trading down at least 6 or 8 spots to get him would be one of those things (and even then I wouldn't be thrilled).

I'd rather take the best player at a position of need than the 8th best player also at a position of need. Seems simple enough?
except when the 8th best player at the position is better than the best player at another position. like in this draft, there are tons of great tackles and no good safeties.

penalizing a player for depth is absolutely nonsensical.

i disagree with your assessment of the safeties...but you already knew that. You generally are off base on these types of things, so you disagreeing with me makes me feel somewhat better.

its known as babinesque logic you see, yeah, you take the best guy in a not fully composted pile of second tier players and bingo, babinesque.

You forgot that CC put his ear to the ground and heard the Falcons hovering over said player which made his aquisition even more stunning .

Last year he was a top 10 pick. He played on a crappy team this year now everybody thinks he's a second tier or second rounder. I guess will find our soon enough.

i feel like we get torched deep a lot, have never had a legit FS, and have a chance to get the best one in the class...don't see a reason in the world not to.

its how i personally feel about the players and have them rated. Shrugs. If everybody agreed about the orders and slotting then this wouldn't be a very fun game

i'd have no problem with you having Phillips going over any other player, but it's your ridiculous explanation that makes me have to laugh. the #1 fullback is not a better player than the #5 DE.

i didn't mean to imply that as a general rule, but more as to my feelings about this particular class. I don't think the tackles (save for long, and albert) grade out higher than phillips...and i have him ahead of all the others.

Its realistic, some spots I would disagree on are:

Bengals: I see Jonathan Stewart landing here. I see mock after mock of them going DLine but with both receivers disgruntled the run game becomes very important if they are going to win games and Rudi Johnson is in decline.

Detroit: Felix Jones was an interesting pick here. With all the problems on defense the Lions have had, and the lack of receivers in this draft, I see them taking the best Defensive player available.

Bills: They still don't have a QB, I think they will try and reach a little and go Brian Brohm here. If not here I expect him to be the first pick in the second round.

Chicago: Sadly, I agree with this pick.

Arizona: I personally don't think Felix Jones is worth this high of a pick, but I do think the Cards take him. The Cards are trying to bring the Pittsburgh mentality to the desert so I see them drafting a big back that can run and grind out a game.

Houston: I don't think he makes it out of the top 10, but it's pretend, McKelvin falls to the Texans and everything in a ok with the world.

He has in the past. agreed. Be a fit for Green Bay though. come in as a nickle groom the lad up. Can the Texans patch with him for eight games ? 18 , as I've said all off season, is way too high for the lad. Just took the herd awhile longer to figure it out.

all of their picks so far at the Safty slot indicate they want to run monster safties....Denver has been doing that for twenty years. I'm figuring they'll take a tweener Cb befor they will reach for KP. Been wrong befor though.
BL made the point that taking "the best" of badly rated class is not nessecarily a good thing. several mockers have droped him now down to the second best safty in this class behind .

GBN:

# *Kenny Phillips 6-2, 212 4.48 Miami
# *Reggie Smith 6-0.4, 200 4.55 Oklahoma (CB)
# Tyrell Johnson 6-0, 207 4.45 Arkansas State

He isn't listed on PFW's rankings at FS. they have him rated as a SS. Imggine that a 4.53 guy rated as a SS .

The team lost S Keith Davis, as expected, to the Dolphins on Tuesday. The loss weakens both the special teams and the depth in the secondary, which quickly has become an area of need. Starting CBs Terence Newman and Anthony Henry have played well, and FS Ken Hamlin was franchised, ensuring that the unit is far from dire. But beyond those three players — and with the question of SS Roy Williams, who appears to be regressing — there is little left. The team also lost CB Jacques Reeves to the Texans. As it stands now, the Cowboys are spending a lot of time looking into the draft’s solid allotment of cornerbacks and should be checking all sources for depth at safety. The team reportedly has visits planned with two top corners, Kansas’ Aqib Talib and Arizona’s Antoine Cason, and met with several more at the Senior Bowl and Combine.

Boyer has him going off the board @ 22.

Gosslin loves the guy...after watching roy willams cover for the last four years, anything has got to look like marked improvement.

Even with the pick...you're still short a CB.

I thought that Demps did a credible job at FS last year. I'm more concerned with the other side. I'll be less concerned if Earl comes back healthy but CC Brown makes me very nervous.
