NFL Draft Countdown Mock 4/18

Ryan

THIS YEAR
http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/sub/mockdraft2.html

Keith Rivers, OLB, USC

The Texans are hoping a left tackle falls to them, with Chris Williams being the most likely possibility, but right now it doesn't appear as though that's going to happen. I was awfully tempted to put a cornerback here and there are indications that may be Plan B if all the top blockers are off the board but Dunta Robinson should come back eventually, they signed Jacques Reeves to a huge free agent deal and they also still have Fred Bennett. Last year nobody envisioned Houston selecting Amobi Okoye but when he fell into their laps they determined he was just too valuable to pass up and that might be the case with Keith Rivers. Morlon Greenwood is okay but certainly not special and while Chaun Thompson was brought in he is more or less just a career backup. Rivers is exactly the type of fast, athletic linebacker that Gary Kubiak saw all those years while he was with the Broncos and teaming him with DeMeco Ryans will certainly upgrade their defensive front seven. With that said offensive tackle is the first order of business, possibly followed by a corner.

This mock still has Rodgers-Cromartie available at our pick and i would be pissed if we passed on him. But if we wasn't available and Rivers was available, i would be very pleased. They also have us taking Antwaun Molden, CB, Eastern Kentucky in round 3.

Very "meh" draft. I'd be more excited about getting DRC and Erin Henderson than Rivers and Molden.

It seems veyr doubtful at this point that DRC won't make it far past the top 10, and i think even Rivers would be a stretch to fall to us, but he would make our front 7 that much better.

I can't believe mocks have us consistently passing on Jonathan Stewart. Same goes for DRC. I just can't fathom a situation where we pass up a franchise player at a position of need. Unless we are one of the teams who took DRC off the board because of the one kidney thing I think we would take him or Stewart before we would take Rivers.

Stewart is a bruising back with speed who couldn't fit our system better. DRC is a big corner with speed, another thing our FO has been quoted as looking for. I just can't see us passing up both these guys for a position we are relatively set at.

As much as I like the upside of DRC, I think Rivers probably is BPA in this case. I'd be very happy if we selected Rivers and any scenario (involving the LT's gone). DRC, Jenkins, and Stewart all should get serious consideration though.

If we do a draft day trade I'd love to give Sage to the Vike's for their 3rd rd pick (from Denver). We would be able to get Matt Forte (who I doubt falls that far). With our pick we have the option of Molden at CB or Anthony Collins for LT.

Regardless, I'd be happy with Rivers and Molden. Just making our Defense that much stronger. While WLB isn't necessarily a NEED, it is far from a strength. I think Greenwood has been very solid for us, but Rivers would provide a real athlete with tremendous upside, and should be able to grow into the role easily (esp. with Demeco next to him).

how do you figure?? oregon ran the shotgun/spread offence almost exclusively from what ive seen

cherry picking, id take DRC and Anthony Collins (first mock ive seen with him available at #79)

His size allows him to break tackles and get to the next level with minimal dancing. His speed allows him to accelerate once he gets to that next level. Essentially, he can run through some tackles at the LOS and once he hits the second level hit that second gear. That is perfect for what we run.

Oregon ran a lot of stretch plays with Dixon helping to move the pocket. Stewart's ability to turn the corner in the NFL is in question.

Also, Stewart did not show a "second" gear in his time at Oregon. He runs very hard, but he did not have the second gear you mentioned.

was making a bad joke

As much as I would like to see it, as long as Kubiak is running the show we won't draft a RB in the first round. My man crush on Jonathan Stewart seems to be getting worse as we head closer to the draft. The toe injury does not really bug me too much. But I also understand that the Texans have many more needs higher than RB at this point, so i will accept it one way or the other.:fans:

unless its offensive or defensive line I'd weight playmaker @ RB over LB. the Texans already have their PRO-BOWL LB in DeMeco Ryans, nothing yet proven @ the RB position, nothing :Tumblewee

That's a matter of semantics. The guy ran a 4.4 with turf toe. My point was that he has excellent speed for his size and, because of that, he would excel in our system.

one cut and go....he won't need to turn many corners in this system. Just get through the hole or cut it back side.

NFL Draft Countdown was one of the first major free players in the mock draft buisness of advertising when I first became hooked back in 04. since then I still use them but just as reading material when bored

Yeah me too beerlover. Really that site isn't any better than the other mock draft sites, but it's always the first one I read.
