what about this possible runningback ?

With the Packers so close to the salary-cap limit, I have been told the next target is restricted free-agent running back Najeh Davenport. The compensation to sign him is only a fourth-round selection, and it will not be hard to come up with a front-loaded contract that makes it difficult for Green Bay to match.

I know he is listed as a FB, but if I am not mistaken,He filled in for Green when he was injured and did well at RB. would you consider taking him as an upgrade over wells(dare I mention the other RB's :heh: )

You're right, Davenport was a RB at GB, not a FB. Though he did play some FB in college at Miami. And he certainly has been more productive than Wells in the past 3 years. But then, he's been running behind the Pack's offensive line.

Davenport is a big powerful back and would be a great compliment to DD. Whenever I watch the Pack play, he seems to do a great job at running the ball whenever Green is tired.

Tha market is saturated with RBs. My feeling is (and we at BB.com are discussing RBs as well, we do need a 3rd) as rich as the draft is in solid RBs, hold off a bit of cap space and select a decent one in the draft. You guys have a #1 RB, so a decent mid second round drafted 2nd RB for development will be easy to handle. In fact, don't be surprised if there are still good RBs left by the third round... The market is saturated with RBs right now, so they should be easy to find. :thumbup

I believe he also played RB at Miami too, but they switched him to FB in favor of Clinton Portis. I think that was the year when Miami had Andre, Shockey, Portis, Davenport, and Dorsey on offense. And they also had Bryant Mckinnie on the O-line too :hmmm:

I don't know if I want Davenport over Wells...... while Wells has not put up ideal production, it is hard to weigh him against Davenport, who's had injury problems throughout his short career.

Davenport has some very impressive numbers.

He's 6-1 250 and he returns kicks also... which is hard to believe at that size, but it's true. He has a 26.5 yard average on kick returns. At Miami he was on their Big East champion 4 by 100 relay team.... Hard to find many 250 pound sprinters. He has a 5.1 YPC average for his three years as opposed to Wells 3.0 YPC. In fact in 2003 in the entire league only Clinton Portis had a better YPC than Davenport. And he only has had 187 carries. GB is only supposed to get a 4th rounder for him.... Someone above said to hold off because we can get a good one in the second or third round.... well.... the fourth round is lower.

Big question for me though is character. He had a very strange arrest when he snuck into a girls dorm room in the middle of the night and crapped in her closet. If he's now potty trained he might be a great pickup.

He is better than Wells or Hollings, but not DD. What good would he really be behind your line anyway. For the love of god, why isn't the Texans brass fixing that sieve of an O-line. Anyway, get the guy some diapers and you have a good number two :dancing:

I made almost this exact post in the draft section but here we go again..

How about we let the RBs we have get some carries, we used a 2nd rounder on Hollings and he got zero playing time last year. Wells is getting better every year and DD has had 2 consecutive 1000 yard seasons. I think RB is our strongest position and if we want to help the running game do something about the line. If we get someone else that just means less playing time for everyone else. They are all very young and still have so much potential. Let them play!

I completely agree with the statement (made me think) but if we get another RB that just means less carries for Hollings and pushes him back even farther. I just want him to get a few snaps and let him show what he can do because I think he is going to be a great player one of these days.

That's why we have the preseason... for each player to earn their spot on the depth charts.

Will Hollings be a great player? If he keeps getting hurt, we'll never know, and he needs to fix that.

What has Hollings shown that makes you believe that he will be a good rb in the NFL? He was a converted db in college and played rb in four college games. He is always injured and when he has got playing time, he has done nothing with it to imply he is even decent.

I honestly couldnt tell you, I just see something in him that makes me believe he is going to be good. I actually watched one of his games ag GT and he was superb. He is a gifted athlete that just needs to become healthier all around. If he gets his chance I believe he will make the most of it.

4.3 yards per carry last year. Best on the team. :heh:

na i dunno about davenport, i say keep D.D and wells get a late round R.B in the draft. Let him play through pre-season, see what he has cause regardless of what he has it cant be no worse than what hollings has now !

I have always thought that Davenport has the talent to play 1st. He is a great 2nd and when he comes in he gets those tough yards. He did have the packs line though. I think i could get a couple yards per carry with them. I think he is a good RB though.

Draft might be better suited to finding a backup for the Texans. So much depth in the draft. :)

Davenport was always billed as the successor to Ahman Green. That said I will be surpised if GB lets him go. They say he has skills, numbchucking skills, bowhunting skills, computerhacking skills. But paying for a RB is a waste because the line can't open a hole. Save the cash, sign Orlando Pace, and next year we can see what DD does with real blockers.

i would be for nabbing davenport...if anything else he could be a really good short yardage back and probably a goalline back...as much as i love DD's running style it maybe be hard for him to run through stroud and henderson at the goalline...Wells was impressive this season but not sure if i've seen the real power running capers is wanting...davenport can do it...give us a reason to let hollings go which i would be ok with
