Worst case scenario he misses a couple games early in the season. I believe he played with this injury last season and managed to run a 4.4 40 with it as well. Not a big deal on his draft status imo.

He will prolly drop a little, but I don't think that we are going to go RB in the 1st round.

I would be shocked if we don't go CB, maybe even OL if the right guy falls to #18.

Look for this topic to be moved to the Draft forum.

his turf toe has been surgically addressed & if anything will make him 100% for which ever team is lucky enough to get him. will not hurt him or limit his NFL career whatsoever, NFL teams know this & if he is a better fit than Mendenhall in their system & need a RB they will not hesitate to draft him.

regarding the Texans its pretty much a mute point, before or after this injury, yet stranger things have happen'ed

I'd be just fine with either of those IF Stewart's gone. But to pass on a potentially elite talent like that to "fill a need" would be horrible. And it's not like RB ISN'T a position of need.

If Stewart is as good as I personally think he'll be, with a healthy Schaub, Johnson, and Charles Spencer, you can gun for shootouts every week until Dunta returns. Hell, we only had one "real" CB until Fred Bennett became a starter anyway, and we did just fine.

Fix the offensive side of the ball first, then start filling the holes on the defense. Worked for the Colts, didn't it?

And the opposite worked for the Ravens, Steelers, Buccaneers etc..:d:

Stewart would be perfect for this system IMO, but the small possibility that we would pull the trigger on a RB in the first round almost makes this a non-discussion. I would cheer the pick, but I think we are going CB or OT. I think you would see an edge rusher go before a RB. This coaching/management staff has been pretty strong in their decision making so in Kubes and Smith I trust.

Sorry but could not disagree with you more. Stewart is a good running back I will not fight you on that. But IMHO Green,Brown,Taylor, and Walker can take care of pounding the rock this year.

Last year I was dead set on NOT taking a Olinemen because of the talent that was going to come out this year. Can someone tell me the last time it looked like 6,7, maybe 8 Olinemen might be take in the FIRST round? The talent pool this year is there WE need to protect Matt's blindside NOW. If we keep getting our QB's pounded into the ground we're looking at Mittens(Carr) part two.

We have a chance with this draft to fix the Oline for the next 10 years. Think about it Gibbs is not going to be with the staff for more than a few years he is 72 and already retired once, point is draft a OLT now with the young talent we have gotten over the passed two drafts the kids can become a unit before Gibbs hangs it up for good.

Last but not least RB are deep in this years draft will still be some good ones left in the third and fourth rounds. Granted not the cabiler of Stewart but still servicable. Always keep in mind the next Greatest Running Back to play the game is in NEXT YEARS draft.

if I understand DerckLee1 he is merely stating the obvious fact of passing on bpa over need. football gods willing  there should be a Tackle or Corner available worth the 18th pick otherwise Jonathan Stewart would be a nice fit, clean, thick build which should hold up better than some think, downhill runner with speed to take it deep :whoohoo:

i completely agree with you on the deep class of RB's this year. i would love to see a few different possiblities happen with this years draft:

A. trade down to pick up a second rounder on draft day
B. keep our draft position and trade sage for a second rounder
C. keep our draft position and trade sage for a third and sixth rounder, and with that third rounder, pick up a RB like say Jamaal Charles (im a homer, i know) or another servicable young RB.

i think option number three would be my favorite option due to the fact that we can use our first pick on a DB or OL and still fulfill the need of a young back. there are many different options that may happen and i cant wait for draft day. i do trust smith and kubes and i hope that they dont let us down. as a big texan fan, disappointment on draft day has been a thing of frequent occurence in the past. only in the last couple of years have the tables finally started to turn, i just hope this year will be the best draft day ever in our history.

I certainly wouldn't rule out this FO taking a RB in the 1st if they feel he's BPA. Remember, Kubes tried to trade back into the first to get Deangelo Williams in 06. Thankfully that didn't work out and we had to settle for DeMeco instead.:whip:

If we pick Stewart, I will be glad to have him and welcome him aboard. But to fill a need position as you stated with outstanding talent and a value pick @ 18 stands true if these guys are available:

Williams
Leodis McKelvin
Mike Jenkins

These guys would possibly be BPA at their respective positions if they are available along with Stewart. I think the staff has tipped their hand and shown us they are planning on going with RB by committee this year. JMO, might pick up another RB late but OL and CB severly needs to be addressed.

If we're talking turff toe:

1. Seattle has coluded with Stewart to drop him into the twenties.

2. The only thing certain about turf toe is that it is uncertain.

No one is going to know bout him untill he laces up the cleats.

Cronic and TT seem to go together.

Simply stated, turf toe is nothing more than a hyperextension injury of the great toe, or first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ). However, the first MTPJ is an extremely complex joint.

The most common mechanism of injury occurs when an athlete's great toe is forcibly jammed into extension or up. A prime example of this would be a football player who has maximally dorsiflexed his toe and is force to take on the weight of an oncoming opponent. In addition, a straight compressive force on the first MTPJ can also cause turf toe.

Kipers time has past he no longer holds the courts attention, the draft has become big buisness & its crowded at the top :lion:

Regarding JS. nobody has taken a bigger hit who has always done the correct thing. Oregon gets little national coverage/recognition. he has always been an elite RB yet people doubt him. he played with turf toe in the Sun Bowl amassing 253 yds. & performed @ the combine running 4.44/4.48 plus positionial drills then gets surgery to correct the injury & gets hammer'ed. you have got to be kidding me

To my defense, I've bashed Stewart on a consistent basis and it has nothing to do with his turf toe.

IMO there are two elite players who might be available at #18. WIlliams LT and J. Stewart. Both can be considered franchise type players who will start for many years and probably will start game one if healthy. Stewart should miss no more than two games if that. If both are there #18, I'd go LT as on avg a LT can play longer than RB.

There are several interesting players at LT and CB avail in 3rd and 4th but again imo not so with RB. RBs I have followed are moving up with Forte 2-3 round and Tashard Choice now project in 3rd. Jamaal Charles, a perfect fit for ZBS, is projected at low first/high second and we miss him without a second and probably will even with. Kevin Smith 6'1" 217 lbs 4.53 from Central Florida. I've not seen him play but other posters have said he is good. The problem with not tagging a WIlliams or Stewart when in your sights, there is no guarantee a similar player will be there later rounds. I want some great picks, not a fill in or 2-3 years that might be good. If Williams or J.S. is at #18
that should be the pick unless Dallas wants to give us both firsts.

major suckage for you I guess then because the Texans have already cleared his jersey #28 (released boulware)

If Jenkins and Williams are off the board, I can only see the Texans taking Jonathan Stewart, unless they make a move down (or up I suppose). His value is just too high compared to anyone left on the board and RB isn't exactly a luxury position on this team. I feel we would almost be obligated to take him in this scenario.

Two strong yet fast backs, one seasoned and the other young and raring to go makes me smile. And if Taylor can solidify the 3rd back spot, we be doing ok.

I'd like for all of our young RB's + Chris Brown to do well so we can cut Ahman...

There are other players I'd prefer of Stewart at this point...

but Chris Brown, Jonathan Stewart, and Chris Taylor would make me feel REAL comfortable about our backfield.

So what are the ramafction if you cut ahmen ? and I agree with you and Beerlover he is top end RB....what I do not agree with is that turf toe is nothing....even operated on truf toe is dangerous. What I think....is they already have their scenrio laid out to what they are going to do. Mcclain has been prety infatic this off season....someone is feeding it to him...they'll go CB/OLT or OLT/ CB.
They have to give themselves the best chance to hit both. Be a weird board line up, or trade down offer if they don't/can't do this.

Per Icak; financial ramification is $3.8 million saving to cut Green after June 1st. Two players can be identified as June 1st cuts and cut prior to June. No reason to cut now as you do not know what will happen to your backs now to June.

In the ideal situation, It would be OLT/CB or CB/OLT, but given the scenerio of Stewart being clearly a tier above all the other options at #18, I just don't think that Smith/Kubiak would just let him go. I would imagine they would do whatever they could to trade down and pick up another pick so they can pick a CB/OLT that is worth the pick number they are choosing, but if not, Stewart would be the guy.

On the video on the texans website titled "Kubiak Discusses Offseason", Kubes says, quote, "We gotta make sure that pick will play for this team for a long long time. I mean, you don't pick a guy that just plays the position of need, you pick a player that you know will be successful in this league for a long, long time." Based on those comments, I would see us either picking JS, or trading to someone that wants him. (again all the top CB and OLT are gone in this scenario)

If Stewart and Williams at #18, I'd select LT then use my 2nd round (Sage) on either Jamaal Charles if still on board or Fort who is moving up as RB. I see several good CBs in 3rd and 4th.

Gibbs is 65.

I hope we go and get Jonathan Steward in the first round. We can pickup an OLineman in the third round (or second, depending on the Sage trade).

The Houston Chronicle notes that the Texans need to find a running back in the draft, but one "who's not coming off an injury."
The Chronicle seems to strongly suggest that the Texans will pass on Oregon RB Jonathan Stewart at No. 18 if they find a defensive end, left tackle, or corner worth that choice. They currently don't have a second-round pick.

I think the Chronicle and everyone else thought we were taking Reggie Bush too...

I am not believing anything about the Texan's draft picks until we're off the clock...

either they've been told to mis-inform the public, or just plain stupid, your choice.

I'm proud this board saw through the local media crap being released & voted Jonathan Stewart as the #18th pick even over the highly coveted (getting to be overrated) Branden Albert. well done :thumbup

this is a real scouts viewpoint of Stewart, Nolan Nawrocki
http://nflblogs.profootballweekly.com/NFLdraft/2.html

Well, I had hoped to send a blog after our annual PFW St. Elmo's bash, but in the back of my mind, I knew that was going to be an ambitious undertaking. More on Elmo's later; the main topic in this post is the RBs that were on display yesterday. By far the most impressive is Oregon's Jonathan Stewart, who weighed in at 5-10, 235 and has his sights set on cranking out a forty time in the low 4.4s on Sunday. This kid is one impressive physical specimen. You could just see that he's chiseled, but what struck me was his massive hands, which were wrapped around the podium platform. Stewart has shot past the likes of Darren McFadden and Rashard Mendenhall and appears destined to be the top RB selected. He plans on running and lifting on Sunday, and it will be interesting to see how he does. As for Mendenhall, I have to give him credit for doing a good job handling all the questions about his character issues. But his media presence isn't great.

mind you this was before he announced his injury & decision to get the surgery done before the draft so he could be ready for whatever team drafted him @ training camp. that act displays real character

man, you're turning into a full blown homer...

it (taking a DE, CB or OT before stewart at #18) is most likely the truth, not misinformation.. theres nothing stupid about it.. they probably cited the 'coming off an injury' part as an excuse instead of criticising stewart's game, which will be the deciding factor on whether we take him or not

and stewart is the #1 back now based on how he looked at the combine and how he handles interviews? :headhurts: some scout id say

imo stewart is at best the #3 back from what ive seen from the rb's

depends who is setting at #18 and if he is the Best Player on our board I think we will take him in a heartbeat especially if texans are still looking at signing Andre Dyson.

Well the white elephant in the room is ahmen..What Smithiack will be saying with the Stweart pick is: "We screwed up royaly last year. there is no hope. " Good luck with that one. I just remember how much grace Jopru recieved.....and he cost a heck of lot less than ahmen.

With the Mario bunus...I'm not sure you have the room to make the move.

For this team (Texans) I'd say Rashard Mendenhall is the best back for us to take, followed by Stewart. But I'd say theres only about a 30% chance we take a RB first round with the way it looks like the pieces are lining up.
