Harrington Unemployed/re-signed Atlanta

I mentioned this in the Deangelo Hall thread.

Atlanta may be making a move for Brady Quinn, because Shockley is still rehabbing a ACL, and Redman is not proven.

I don't see them wasting the 3rd overall on Ryan. He may be there in the second or third.

I think Flacco is better than Ryan anyway

Ryan reminds me of Matt Leinart in he's NFL ready but looks to more translate to a Matt Hasselbeck type player. Not that there's anything wrong with that but I'm not sure that is worth the #3 pick.

Brohm, Woodson and Flacco have mroe upside.

That's what I was thinking. We'll be quick to get flamed for saying it but the reality is, if Sage ends up getting traded- we have to get a veteran QB to back up Schaub, imo. Harrington would be a decent back up. We'd be running out of options.

Gus Ferrotte is available last i heard. 10x better then Harrington. Though that's not saying much. IS Tony Banks Still around?!

Man if we could get a second for Sage....I'd be one happy camper.
 
I wouldn't have a problem with Joey coming in here for the backup job if Sage is indeed traded for a 2nd or 3rd. He has shown flashes and was probably mishandled last year in favor of Sandwich err Leftwich.

I'm just saying. He could compete for the job. If he isn't good enough, we would know. It's not as if the guy is going to cost any money. Just a training camp invite ONLY if Sage is traded....which I think we should do if we can get our 2nd Rounder back....not for a 3rd Rounder alone though (like the Vikes have rumored to offer....i would do a 3rd and a late 4th or early 5th though)

exactly. if we are forced to play Sage and he performs well again, we may actually lose leverage because Sage may demand/ask for a trade after the season...thus lowering his value. If we need him, he probably asks to leave. If we don't need him, he probably asks to leave. Either way, his value drops next year.

Right now, its a perfect storm to get value for him. Good numbers. Lack of viable alternatives out there in QB market. Happy player. I want more than a 3rd for him but if they don't want to give up a 2nd, maybe we could take a 3rd and a 5th for him. Maybe Chester Taylor figures into the deal. That would be 2 extra prospects/players. I like Sage but like icak said, its a luxury to have a backup like Sage. Any investor knows to sell high, and its never gonna be higher. Sell.

Agreed about a quality back-up, which is why I am not as willing as some to deal Sage away.

If your QB is not getting hit, I'll agree. Carolina could have been a playoff team in the weak NFC South, were it not for atrocious play by the backup QBs. The Texans might have ended with a 6-10 record with a Leftwich as backup. Some might say, "So what?" I think a losing record would have put more pressure on this coaching staff. I think a losing record this season would put a ton of pressure on this coaching staff.
 
If I'm someone like Cleveland, Buffalo, or Kansas City I might try to trade my no. 2 QB for a draft pick or so (even if late round) and pick up Joey on the cheap.

Cleveland gave WAY too much up for Quinn to get rid of him after his rookie year. Losman and Huard may get you about the same as Sage could...maybe a little less in Losman's case.

Okay, Cleveland was probably the Heineken talking.

But I think that you probably could leverage Losman or Huard in this market to a team like Minnesota or Atlanta for a draft pick or so.

Me, proving yet again why I'm not an NFL GM (but it sho' is entertaining to speculate).

I agree that Losman and Huard both have some value. Huard may get you an early 4th and Losman may get you a little less.

I think that one also has to factor in the relative strength of the club.

For instance - a team like Cleveland is a contender and, as such, really needs a good backup QB in case they get a ding in Derek Anderson and need some one to come in and maintain at some point in the season. Whether or not BQ is that guy I don't know but I digress.

I don't think that anyone really could make the argument that Buffalo or KC is on the verge of a run. That being the case, if they have a Losman or Huard (either worth maybe a 4th or 5th round pick) then perhaps they should consider a journeyman like a Joey Harrington to keep the second seat warm an take the extra draft pick.

Who knows, maybe they get a gem like Freddie B and end up with a starting caliber player?

A JOB FOR JOEY?

Quarterback Joey Harrington has been dumped by three teams. One of them could soon be taking him back.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Falcons could be re-signing Harrington, only days after releasing him.

Harrington was scheduled to earn a base salary of $2.5 million in 2008. Now that he's had a chance to realize what else is available for him on the open market (i.e., nothing), he could be taking less than that to play for the Falcons.

Currently on the roster in Atlanta are Chris Redman and D.J. Shockley.
 
I'm in the camp that believes signing Harrington for a reasonable price would be a good idea if we needed a backup. The key to that is "reasonable price" of course.

Hear me out.

Gary Kubiak took one season to see David Carr for himself and said "This dog won't hunt". Now granted we have lots of people now saying "I've been saying that for years" and I'm sure that a number of them did in fact say it for years and out of all those guys who said it for years a handful of them actually knew what they were looking at. The truth is that if you looked at David Carr in 2002 you really didn't have much to go on. Maybe you saw some signs of things you didn't like but there was a lot going on and it was difficult for almost anyone not deeply involved with the team to tell where the problems were coming from. 2003 and 2004 were gradual improvements and most people, even those with misgivings about Carr were still talking about getting line help and needing more pieces. 2005 was when the wheels came off and most people I was reading at the time were talking about him being either too far gone from the hits or having never been what he was advertised to be. The Texans brought in Kubiak and just from looking at film he couldn't say for certain whether or not Carr was the problem. He coached him a season and then pulled the plug almost instantly.

I look at where Harrington has been and I see one team that's a perinnial basket case (Detroit), another team going through a very long drought (Miami), and another team running an offense built around a Michael Vick style QB (Atlanta). None of those teams look like a very good fit for Harrington to me.

I think that Kubiak could bring him in and tell fairly quickly whether or not he's a coachable player whose career can be salvaged (ie: victim of circumstance) or whether he is what he's looked like for years.

For a reasonable price I think it would be worth looking at.

So my question is; has Sage's value peaked, or will it go up as we get closer to the draft? IMO Minnesota is just playing us. I think we should be calling the Bears to see what they would offer. We'll see how much more Minnesota is willing to offer if they see we have another trading partner. There can't be that many QB's available if Testaverde played this year.:thinking:

Sage is worth more than a 3rd rounder IMO. The Vikings know that. I'm not opposed to a trade, but I wouldn't do it unless they offer a 2nd or two 3rds. I guess that's for the FO to decide, but I'm glad they didn't agree to it. I know, I should be on the other thread; but if they want a QB badly enough, they'll offer more. I don't think there are many QB's to chose from. :)
