Warner in Red and White?

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Arizona Cardinals, in search of a veteran quarterback, will make a strong push to sign two-time MVP Kurt Warner this week, according to a league source.

Warner, who exercised an out in his contract with the New York Giants in order to become a free agent, wants to go to a team that would make him the starter, which is a role the Cardinals can give him.

Josh McCown, Arizona's starting quarterback in 2004, did get a qualifying offer from the Cardinals this week as a restricted free agent. He received the highest tender of $1.4 million, which will essentially keep him on the roster.

McCown also has high praise from coach Dennis Green, although he hit on just 57 percent of his passes last year while throwing 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. McCown was benched for a time in favor of Shaun King.

Green has had success in his career with veteran quarterbacks, including Brad Johnson and Randall Cunningham with the Minnesota Vikings, which is why the source indicated the Cardinals would move in the Warner direction.

Much of the talk here at the NFL's scouting combine has Warner ticketed to Chicago to play for the Bears, but it appears the Cardinals are willing to make a push to keep that from happening.

At 33, Warner started nine games for the Giants last year, going 5-4 before being replaced by rookie Eli Manning. Giants coach Tom Coughlin said at the combine that he strongly believes Warner can still be an effective starter.

If he does sign with the Cardinals, Warner would be throwing to a heck of a receiving group in Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Bryant Johnson. The Cardinals will add a top back in the draft, possibly with their first-round pick.

Warner led the St. Louis Rams to Super Bowls in 1999 and 2001, winning the first one.

Warner and the Cardinals would be a good fit IMO. He still has something to prove I think and what better way to do it than in Arizona. Sure he mightn't make them a SB team but he can't hurt their chances now could he? Look at his weapons out wide, and I am sure a few QB's would love to be throwing to the Cardinals WR's.

There is also rumour of him going to Chicago. He could possibly do ok there as well I think but we'll have to wait and see.

What does everyone else think about Warner (either for or against)...???

I've always liked Warner and hope he does well wherever he goes. I think he's sliding as far as his talent goes but in the right situation he can succeed.
I'm a bit surprised he wants to leave the Giants so soon; he can be a very capable backup.

I like Warner. I am concerned about the thumb on his throwing hand though. It seems like he a fumbles a lot when he is sacked now. He didn't do that nearly as much prior to the injury to his thumb.

I think the NFL should reevaluate the QB rating. Warner's rating was skewed because he threw something like 6-7 passes where the receiver was tackled inside the 5 yard line (and he didn't get a passing TD on the possession).

There are rumors that Warner wants to play for the Lions above all others.

"Two-time MVP Kurt Warner" - Simply amazing.

I don't see Kurt going to Detroit. Besides they have Joey Harrington out there and he is getting better through the course of each season. I'd like to see Kurt on the Cards. With a WRs like that who wouldn't want to be there. I don't know anything about the Cards' o-line. Hope it's good enough to protect him IF he goes there.

i see kurt going to chicago...with rex grossman having to rehab his leg...his starting ability is still up in the air...warner can go in there and possibly take the starter position away from him

Regardless, he looks like he is staying in the NFC.

He needs to pull a Marshall Faulk and admit he is getting older and just settle with a back up job. Where ever he goes he will probably be sub par and be replaced mid season like the last few teams he has been with.

The thing is, QBs and RBs have different ages of decline.

Not to mention, Faulk would still be somewhat effective were it not for those injuries.

I'm fairly certain Warner might have a few more good years left in him.... having to be a Giant certainly didn't help him out [c'mon, no oline or receivers, and a psycho of a TE].

Now, if Warner goes to Chicago, that's when we should persuade him to hang up his cleats.
