Chronic: Iowa CB Charles Godfrey impresses Texans

Texans34Life

I BLEED TEXANS!
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/texansfront/5566675.html

Iowa cornerback Charles Godfrey grew up in Baytown and played at Lee High School. He's 6-0, 207 pounds and expects to run the 40-yard dash in the 4.3s on Tuesday. He hopes to play for his favorite team.

Godfrey is such a big Texans fan that he has their logo tattooed on his right hand.

"That's my team," he said. "I'm from Texas. That's our NFL team.

"I would love to go home and play for the Texans. They have a team that's really on the rise. They've got a great scheme, and I would love to play for them."

Godfrey spent 15 minutes being interviewed by the Texans.

"They talked to me, got some information from me, told me they were interested and said they were looking forward to seeing me perform (Tuesday)," he said.

The Texans indeed are interested in Godfrey.

"I like him," general manager Rick Smith said. "He's fast and physical, and it's a position of need."

Godfrey's older brother, El Roberson, played quarterback at Kansas State.

With his size, Big 10 experience, and if he does run in the 4.3s it's really difficult to think a player like him at such an important position like CB would last until the 3rd round ?

That's what I have been reading. I'm just speculating. Since we do not have a 2nd round pick at this time I would like for him to fall to the 3rd round.

Maybe we trade down into the second to get him?

Regardless, it's just great to read someone has nothing but great things to say about our team.

With RB and CB so deep, its possible to get 1st round type talent in the 2nd. Which pshes 2nd round talent into the 3rd and so on. Its a good chanc

Honestly I'm not trying to be a cynic here, a wise-guy or whatever, but don't you really think these players will say and do about anything to get drafted
as high as possible? I would if I were in their shoes. And I doubt that Godfrey is thinking about the third round, he's probably thinking about the #18 overall ?

I think the kid would fit our team.

But let's be honest, how many kids that say they can run 4.3 actually run 4.3?

I would be fine with us drafting him in the 3rd IF he is worth picking in the
3rd. We do need DB help. I don't know much about the kid but the good thing is that if he is drafted by the Texans I won't have to change my loyalties to another NFL team. I mean since he went to the same high school I went to, I have to root for the team that drafts him right?

Who wouldn't want to do that? Agents spend half the combine talking to scouts asking what they think about this player or that player. Question is though, how many teams would you be willing to tattoo on your hand?

He has good size and weight for a corner, pretty big acutally, if he can really run in the 4.3's it sounds like a solid pick up for us.

Anyone know how his coverage skills are, nose for the ball, etc.?

Overview
Godfrey entered his senior season barely a blip on the NFL radar, but after a breakout campaign that resulted in Second Team All-Big Ten honors, his stock is on the rise.

A former safety, Godfrey has shown significant improvement in his two years at the position. He is hyper-aggressive in his run support and seems to relish the physical aspect of the game. Godfrey averaged 74 tackles over his two seasons at cornerback, but it is his improvement as a pass defender that has scouts so intrigued. Godfrey showed better recognition as a senior and an ability to make the big play (nine pass break-ups, five INTs).

There are some concerns about his transition -- Godfrey isn't as fast on the field as his timed speed -- which could result in his being moved back to safety in the NFL, at least initially. There are some concerns, but Godfrey's physicality and raw athleticism will result in an early-round selection despite the fact that he remains a bit unpolished.
Analysis
Positives: Rare combination of size and speed. ... Well-built athlete who has the physique of a safety and track star speed. ... Versatile, having played his first two seasons at safety before making the transition to cornerback for his junior and senior seasons. ... Flashed ability previously in his career, but enjoyed a breakout senior campaign. ... Rare pure speed. ... Significant improvement as a senior in terms of technique, play recognition and creating turnovers. ... Physical defender. ... Reliable open-field tackler who aggressively supports the run from his cornerback position. ... Good initial quickness and physicality to re-route the receiver. ... Smooth transition to run downfield. ... Effective in zone coverage. ... Reads the quarterback's eyes and can break on the ball to make plays. ... Learned to use his hands much more effectively as a senior, improving from two INTs and five pass break-ups to five INTs and nine break-ups in second season at cornerback. ... Still learning the nuances of the position, but possesses legitimate upside. ... Hard worker. ... Team leader.

Negatives: Still a bit raw after only playing cornerback for two seasons. ... Elite timed speed, but this speed isn't always evident on the field. ... Faster than he is quick. ... Improved as a senior, but doesn't always recognize the play as quickly as scouts would like, showing only marginal break on the ball despite his experience and athleticism.

politics-

from a chat at espn:

Brad (Gadsden,Alabama): Charles, Who was your fav. nfl player and team growing up?

SportsNation Charles Godfrey: Growing up my favorite team was the Cowboys. And my favorite player would have to be Deion Sanders.

http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=19278

maybe it was an iron on tatoo.

either way, politics aside, he seems like a pretty good fit for our scheme. They should have checked his other hand for a STAR.

Considering he was 16 when the Texans played their first game I don't see how he could possibly say the Texans were his favorite team growing up.

I suppose he was answering the question literally and determined that after 16 he was "all growed up" and so the GIANT TEXANS LOGO TATOOED ON HIS HAND wasn't motivation enough to consider them his favorite team.

(please keep in mind that my gripe is light hearted and purely for entertainment sake. i mean absolutely no harm)

I really like this kid. Here are a couple more write-ups on him.

http://condraft.com/database/big-10/iowa/charles-godfrey/index.html

Overview A well-seasoned corner who possesses all the skills necessary to succeed at the next level. Is going to test off the charts at post-season events.

Strengths Physical from beginning to end. Jams receivers and knocks off their routes. Timed speed is phenomenal(4.3 range). May just be scratching the surface of potential. Excels in cover skills, very good in run support.

Weaknesses Does not play as fast as he times. Has been known to be too aggressive and be completely out of the position. Can't keep up down field with elite speed receivers.

Projection Will work out as good as any corner and elevate his draft stock at the combine and pro days. Is big, physical, and fast, important for an NFL corner. Looks to be a 2nd-3rd rounder.

http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/cb/charlesgodfrey.html

Strengths:
Has excellent size with a solid frame and long arms...Outstanding timed speed...A fantastic athlete...Real quick with a burst to close...Very good ball skills...Is strong and tough...Physical and aggressive...A reliable tackler...Will deliver the big hit...Is versatile with experience at two positions...Still improving and has a huge upside.

Weaknesses:
Extremely raw and still learning the position...Has to work on his technique when it comes to footwork and positioning...Marginal instincts and awareness...Doesn't play as fast as he times...Inconsistent and gives up too many big plays...He relies too heavily on his natural talent...Risky and might be a bit of a "Workout Warrior".

Notes:
Older brother El Roberson played quarterback at Kansas State...He played safety early in his college career and only moved to corner in '06...Finally started to fulfill his potential as a senior...Will test through the roof and it'll be easy to fall in love with his measurables but he is still somewhat of a developmental guy...He'll likely be chosen relatively early based more on potential than actual college production.

Pros: Good combination of size and speed. Well-built athlete with a solid frame and great speed. Versatile, playing his first two seasons at safety before making the transition to cornerback for his junior and senior seasons. Very good tackler, who shows the ability to come up and support the run. Still learning the position, but possesses legitimate upside. Is said to be a hard worker and team leader.

Cons: Very raw, having only played CB for two years at the college level. Not as quick as he is fast. Does not break on the ball as well as he should be able to given his athleticism.
