MANVEL - Houston Texans receiver Jerome Mathis was arrested on assault-family violence charges late Sunday after allegedly choking his pregnant girlfriend, Brazoria County Sheriff’s officials said.

Mathis, 24, was booked into the Brazoria County jail at 9:26 p.m. Sunday and posted $3,000 bond at 11:11 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office. He faces one charge of assault causing bodily injury under the family violence code, Patrol Capt. Richard Foreman said.

Mathis allegedly pushed Erica Smith, 26, onto a bed during an argument in their home in the 3600 block of Tumbling Falls at about 11 p.m. Friday, Foreman said. The couple apparently discussed a cell-phone battery charger before the incident, he said.

“She reported that he came home verbally aggressive toward her and left the residence, then came back a few minutes later demanding his car charger,” Foreman said. “He became angry while he looked for the charger, and when she gave it to him, he pushed her down on the bed and began choking her while putting all of his body weight on her.”

Adios, Jerome. Just when I thought this guy was dead weight, he shows that he has some physical ability when it comes to beating up on pregnant women.
 
Bless his heart - Mathis has gone slowly downhill since his pro bowl appearance. First attitude, then injuries, then pit bulls and now this. For sure he won't be a Texan now -but I do hope, for his talented, young self, he gets it together and lives to play again somewhere.
 
There's a young dude out there someplace just waiting for his chance to shine in the NFL. JM is definitely replaceable!! Since he's on IR, when can the TEXANS cut him?
 
Hardly a surprise. I was really hoping we could deal him. Now since the Raiders are the only ones who would take him (even cincy gained a clue) we need to find a way to make them bid against themselves.

He was gone anyway. Dude's got "Dumbarse" written across his forehead.

And I am sure Miss Smith wouldn't exaggerate facts now would she?
 
Awful situation for the family. Mathis is now at risk of being without a job to support his newborn.

He has made it an easier proposition for the Texans to let him go.
 
When the cops arrived he fled, but they caught him after a brief chase because he pulled a hammy. This is not true, just poking fun at him. But seriously don't hit or choke a woman you coward, but you may fit right in with the Raiders loser!!!
 
Makes an already no-brainer decision twice as easy. He sure is making it hard for himself to find someone else to give him a chance when he's healed...
 
"Choking pregnant girlfriend."

That phrase right there gives me no sympathy for the guy. Scum. Take his ass elsewhere if alleged charges are true. I would feel bad for her an dthe baby but if he is choking the pregnant mother than maybe it is better off he is not around a crying child. No excuse.

They dont have to cut him he is a free agent. Since he would be resticted they just wont be tendered an offer. It is a clean break which will be good for us. We can finally move forward from this situation with Mathis and concentrate on signing Davis.

Hopefully his agent doesnt try to hold us hostage now in contract negotiations due to his added importance now.
 
Well we all felt the same way about Julio Lugo.. the Astros cut him, etc for allegedly beating his wife.

Turned out he was cleared in Court when the wife acknowledged that she made everything up.

I'd feel more comfortable about it if police had been called and he was arrested immediately at the scene.

The incident allegedly happened Friday, but he wasn't arrested until Sunday....
 
Not only will he soon be out of a job, if he lands somewhere else and turns out to be guilty, Goodell will have his way with him.

The most dispicable thing I can think of is to hit or choke a pregnant women. If this is true, he is scum. Any type of abuse is horrible, but she's pregnant with his child, what a moron. Two words for the lady: GET OUT!

Actually I don't think they have. It would be different had Jerome been a consistant WR in the offense.

IMO the writting has been on the all year this was a make or break season for Jerome. It'd be different if he'd put his shoulder to the grind wheel all year and got injured. The injury again this year was a big blow but I think after the Pitbulls incident espcially it being a touchy subject after Vick sealed it. This was just another hit for re-inforcement on his character. Down the road someone might bite I really don't care though.

AD's negotiations will be more leveraged by other teams true interest in his service...not by any stretch what has happened with Jerome.

Yup.

She declined to press charges probably just for that reason. (Though I will say that the truth in domestic abuse situations is hard to figure out sometimes).

Oh and 6'1? I don't think so.

Who wants to sign a teammate-hitting, motorcycle-crashing, pitbull-threatening, prego-girlfriend-choking, lives-on-the-IR returner who played on a team where other players were also able to have spectacular returns?

That's what I was thinking. Remember there is two sides to a story and some women out there are not goodie two shoes either. Don't get me wrong, if he did do this, terrible to be you Jerome but I will wait to see how this plays out.

She declined to press charges. When that happens, the state can bring charges based on the evidence they have. Due to the red marks and the fact that she is pregnant, they decided to bring charges. Deciding to make that decision can take some time.

You are right to say that you never know what the situation is going to be with domestic violence charges. The truth is hard to figure out sometimes.

The problem that Mathis has in that he doesn't have a large store of good will like other members of the team. If a Fred Weary or Chester Pitts says something didn't happen the way it sounds in police reports, they are going to get a bigger benefit of the doubt than someone who doesn't have much of a history of being responsible.
 
After a pregnant mother's choking, Mathis better pray that she gives birth to a healthy baby without mental deficiency or physical deformities............otherwise, his problems become much worse than simply not returning to the Texans.

Can we hold that loser on the team until the last possible second and then cut him on the last day of cuts for the 53 man roster? I would love to screw a scumbag like that over.
 
And I was hoping we'd get a 4th if another team signed him. arggh! Even if the dude turns out innocent, he sure is making it hard for anyone to want him around.

I seem to recall he had some "attitude" issues in college too. Guess his early success went to his head.
 
This is a reminder of why building a team w/o "character issues" may take longer, but has less downside risk.

er, fast smurf WRs. Down side for the organazation is they probabaly can't get two six packs and a hamsandwich for him now. I recall after the pro bowl year a certain poster suggesting we trade the guy then at the peak of his value. And I also recall a bunch of folks posting how crazy I was.

IF, and big emphasis on IF this is true, then im sad for that situation. I hope he gets whatever help he needs....in prison. Sad and pathetic. Abuse of women is just wrong...for the same reasons i don't want kobe bryant in a rockets uniform, i now don't want Jerome Mathis in a texans uniform. I'd like to hear some more evidence before i convict him in the court of public opinion however

He doesnt need to be cut he is a RFA. They can just not tender him, or not offer him a contract.
