Ever wonder about the media's predictions?

GP

Go Texans!
Every year, on this board, I see us talking about how "off" the media's predictions are. Well, here's a GREAT article which has a detailed listing of each media analysts' bold NFL predictions before the 07 season began.

Lots of analysts thought the 49ers would be awesome, and they had the NFC West as the TOUGHEST division.

It's a good read!

Why does Chris Mortensen even have a job? His "inside" info is correct about 5% of the time.

And I find that I disagree with most everything that Peter King says.

one of my favorites is Bill Simmons saying the Chargers weren't going to be a factor for the playoffs at all after week 2.

I love how the media kisses Dungy's behind & craps Belichek. Belichek has won more games that count than Dungy ever will

The media is not full of soothsayers. I kinda don't expect the pundits to be right....hell, it's tough to predict the weather much less the outcome of sporting events in a league with 32 evenly matched teams...unless you consider the Cardinals and Dolphins as "evenly matched" (insert rim shot please) of course .

I was looking at the cover of an SI today from the preview of the Super Bowl. There was a box on the cover that said "The Giants will win the Super Bowl and I will tell you why" by Peter King. Every once in a while they will get something right.

athleticism-wise, all the teams are fairly close. a few minor adjustments here and there with technique and coaching can change things drastically.

They don't exist to be right. They exist to talk about something we're interested in (our respective football teams) and to start conversations about same.

Based on the existence of this thread those guys have succeeded.

The media had a colletive tunnel-vision thing for the Pats, just as they did
on an individual basis for Reggie Bush a couple years ago.

it's entertainment, period. do people really think that these guys would be under scrutiny by their bosses, program directors, producers, etc for not being right all the time? :user: as long as they bring in the viewers, that's all that matters.

that's not to say that everything they say is for pure ratings, i'm sure most of it is their actual opinion, as ridiculous as it may be.

Whether we are talking about predictions relating to sports, politics, financial markets, or the weather, the media is routinely wrong.

keep in mind, when they're wrong, it's not because they're stupid. it's because no one can accurately predict things in sports with great regularity. gamblers say just win 60% of the time and you can make a living.

Just caught a segment on ESPN's First Take where they were making predictions about the upcoming NASCAR season.

One of the questions was, "Who is going to be the Reggie Bush, the overhyped driver who ends up being a bust?"

Not the exact words, but something to that effect.
