Lance Z's Mock with Texans taking a CB

No doubt that CB is a major need. However, I doubt they want to line up a guy with just one year experience and a rookie as the CBs or heaven forbid, Faggin. I expect that they get a mid-level type CB in FA and draft a guy later that could develope.

Wow! Scratch that! I went to read the comments and he has a different CB penciled in ahead of Cason now. Anyone know about Flowers?

He's supposed to be one of the top CBs, if the the top CB in the draft according to Mayock. I don't know much about him, though.
_______

On another note, I don't think we take a CB in the first round. CBs take too much time to develop into a starter (exception being Dunta), and we need a starting CB day 1.

I think the texans will definatly bring a free agent CB and they will draft another corner in the 3rd round, I think the Texans will go after mendenhall if he is there at 18.

Brandon Flowers, Junior, Virginia Tech. his specific combine measureables may change so it reamains to be seen if in fact he is 5010 or less (the NFLAC, graded Flowers as a 2nd round pick) solid build/frame 190. physical tackler with nose for football, seperates football from receiver/ball carrier. will struggle in single coverage without help over the top, looks for the homerun hit, gambles & intimidates.

Looks & sounds more like a natural saftey. if Brandon measures out under 5010 say 5090 thats Bob Sanders territory. hard to argue that kind of player is not worth a 1st rd. pick, however even Bob was a 2nd rd. pick. Flowers seems like a similar type who projects to safety in the NFL, but could begin & adequately fill Dunta's roster spot until he is able to return, upon which he would be the one moving to FS not Dunta Robinson.

Bottom line while I could understand the selection I would like it more if he was targeted later in a trade down scenero & that the Texans should expect better value & more a pure positional player, CB, OT or RB with the 18th pick.

another ridiculous scenario of Miami moving into the 20's from the #1 pick.

In any hypothetical deal, you would obviously receive more than just the two 1st Rounders in 2008. You would probably get a quality starter, a quality backup, some more late round 2008 picks and probably a 2nd Rounder or more the following year (2009)to close the deal.

Personally, I dont think that a deal gets done. I could see Dallas moving up to get McFadden only if he falls past #4. Moving up to #1 overall just costs too much and McFadden is no sure thing.

The silly part is the cowboy's giving up multiple picks and a good player to the dolphins for an overrated prospect, not the Dolphins taking it.

If recent reports are indeed true (I don't buy them) that McFadden is falling, it is far more likely that the Cowboys would be looking to trade up with New England who is traditionally looking to trade back.

I wish the draft would be here sooner. Now I don't really watch it on TV except when the Texans make their pick, but all the talking about it on blogs, here, tv, etc... make me excited about it nonetheless.

Bill would love to give the finger to the NFL and get his 2 First Round picks back. That is for sure.

I'm surprised its taken so long for some to start to discount Longs lofty ranking and being rated the #1 OT ahead of Clady from Boise State ?
The thing is I've read in many places that Long is basically a RT whereas I've
never seen that about Clady.

The salary cap seems to play a bigger role everyday in what teams decide to do personnel wise . But if it were me i don't do it unless the boys give up way more than it is worth and then marion barber :thisbig: . My vote for the texans first round if it falls like this mock presents is rivers , no way do i go flowers over either rivers or chromartie .

NFL Network's Adam Schefter and NBC's Peter King say they're "hearing" the Dolphins are interested in Virginia DE Chris Long.

Not really. Not if Barber and another pick are included.
trade out Barber for Demarcus Ware and Miami will listen. another runningback is completely unnecessary with the way the defense is looking right now.

and forget about what it means to Miami, it's just idiotic for Dallas to move up to #1 when McFadden's value is dropping steadily in a crowded RB draft class. especially since all of this speculating is based on something Jerry Jones said 7 months ago when everyone assumed Dallas would be drafting top 5 because the Browns were expected to suck royally. i bet as soon as the Browns started looking good, Jones just dismissed the pipe dream and started worrying about other players.

of course they are, they're definitely interested in the cream of the crop players. they've scouted Glen Dorsey more than anyone else so far, too. both Longs, Dorsey, Ryan, Ellis, Gholston...they're all under consideration.

Here are additional notes that he added to the page. Interesting to see the battle between WRs.

From LZ's blog ----------------

- One scout told me that he thought it was ludicrous that I had Early Doucett in the first round when he thinks there is a chance he'll go in the 3rd. There are major differences out there in terms of opinions regarding Doucett, Limas Sweed and James Hardy.

- It is looking clearer and clearer that Vandy LT Chris Williams is the Brandon Roy of this draft. Houston Rocket fans know what I mean by that. When shooting guard Roy was coming out of college, he would have been the perfect fit for the Rockets, but as the draft got nearer, it became obvious that he was moving up and wouldn't be within reach for the Rockets. Williams would be a great get for the Texans but it is looking less and less likely that Williams will be anywhere near 18 come draft day.

- Don't be shocked if you start to hear more and more buzz about Boise State LT Ryan Clady being drafted ahead of Michigan LT Jake Long. Long had some very solid games this year, but the game against Ohio State is bothering some teams and I'm beginning to hear more and more teams who are considering moving Clady ahead of Long on their draft board.

Never gonna happen.

Ware is the best passrushing LB in the NFL. Not even Jones gives that away in a trade.

Kastofsna is playing you dude so don't encourage him. the Dolphins can't possibly screw up this draft as bad as last year thats why they reeled in Big Tuna to play the pond for all its worth :bunpan:

I've been on the Chris Williams bandwagon here for a while and really doubt many teams will select him higher than 15. He's a great athlete, a big but suitable ZB LT, but it's clear that Clady and Long are the poster boys. Williams would be a reach if he's selected before we pick. He simply wouldn't be the BPA until around pick 18.

yup, and think about it. they have teh #33 pick as well. If they traded down and picked up another first and a 2nd, they could end up getting 4 of the top 50 or so players in the draft. They are already getting 2 of the top 33 guaranteed. Parcells wants to build the team and if he could get both Dallas 1st Rounders, a 2nd, Barber, Carpenter (sign and trade?), and a conditional 3rd next year, then you would be adding Barber, Carpenter, and 4 of the top 50 players. It's all a crapshoot. Miami will make a deal with the team that gives them enough value, otherwise they will take Long, Dorsey, or longshot Ryan. My money is on Dorsey. I think Long falls to the Raiders and he follows his dad to Oakland.

Ok, here is a possibility. Chris Williams, Mendenhall, Phillips and Stewart are there at #18. So are Cason and Talib. All listed could be a starter game one. What do Texans do? Forget FA as we have no guarantee on if they'd get anyone.

You take Talib or Cason, whichever one you feel more comfortable with. I'd go with Talib.

I keep changing my mind. Was Bennett in the fourth luck or could lightning strike twice? It is very hard for me to turn from a franchise type RB, but I think I go CB, but not sure which. NFL Draft Scout rate them 4 & 5 with Cason first and Talib, while faster and bigger, maybe dropping to 2nd round. Although I hope we get a corner in FA, I hope we have this choice to make.

Bennett was actually projecting as a 3rd rounder so we got great value for him in the 4th, (plus I really liked him anyway and was hoping we would draft him) so I wouldnt bank on us getting another player as good as him especially because there was alot of mid round talent at CB last year. That is not to say we cant get a good player in the 3rd or 4th because I think we can. I think what you do is grade out the talent at our 3 big needs LT, RB, and CB. By doing that you see RB is the deepest and LT has the largest drop off, but t our position we are drafting in the 1st the BPA will likely be CB, so you wait til the 3rd for a LT and 4th for RB.

Anyway thats how I see it.

thats a visual example of why I beleive he projects to FS in the NFL. likes to play in a soft cover 2 keeps the play underneath then deleivers the big hit :hothboy:

Just wanted to point out that in that play Flowers is hitting a guy different from who he was covering. He starts out at the top of the screen covering the far receiver on a post pattern? and then hits the receiver cutting across from the other side.
