Awtysst's knee jerk Mock

Draft Guru
Thats right. This is my knee jerk mock. After watching the superbowl I had a knee jerk reaction. I will probably not feel this way tomorrow, nor will I probably even think its a good idea. But as Social Distortion said, "Reach for the sky cuz tomorrow may never come"

Off season: Texans sign Marcus Trufant for CB.
Texans resign: Will Demps FS
Texans resign:Andre Davis WR

1. Calais Campbell: DE Univ of Miami
Yup there it is. Knee Jerk. Whats better than having Michael Strahan? Thats right: Osi Umenyiora on the other side.

2. Matt Schaub: QB: Houston Texans
Man, I cant believe he lasted this long. Oh, wait, nm.

3. Oneil Cousins: OT UTEP
Good agile feet, nice long arms, and has good flexibility to bend at the point of attack. Alex Gibbs is gonna love this kid.

4. Mike Hart: RB Michigan
I was surprised he was here so I grabbed him.

5. Marcus Griffin: SS Texas
Slide him next to the newly resigned Will Demps. Let Von Hutchins walk Let Brandon Harrison back up Demps, and let Boulware, Earl, and Brown fight it out.

6. Jordy Nelson: WR Kansas State
I know we have a solid WR group but this is a value pick. Besides, there might be times we want to go 5 wr sets. AJ, AD, KW, JJ and Jordy Nelson would be a scary.

7. Jordan Dizon: OLB Colorado.
Dizon can backup Meco and Diles when Diles becomes a starter. He might even become our third OLB.

Why would you sign another Mario Williams ? Isn't campbel like 6'5" and two eighty ? Now if you want to go tramping for another Strahan clone....

Thought the 3-6 was very good value picks. Don't understand the 7, second MLB pick ? Are you moving Demeeeco or just projecting an injury in '08 or '09 ?

I agree with TTP, I personally would not mind a DE at all, but Campbell is very similar to MW, I would like a guy with a little more speed at RE. I would take VG if he fell in a heartbeat. I like your idea though. Another guy that liked alot was Johnny Dingle from WVU. I only saw them play a couple of times but he seemed to jump off the screen making plays, plus he might be available in the later rounds.

Well the thought last night was that it would be scary to have a line with basically 2 Marios. One Mario can wreck havoc. 1 Mario and 1 Okoye create more havoc. 2 Marios and 1 okoye is scary.

7th was basically a value pick for depth. I am projecting that Zac Diles becomes a starting OLB (possibly replacing Greenwood). Greenwood hasnt been bad but for the money we paid him, he hasnt produced enough. Kinda like Weaver, he hasnt been bad, he just hasnt produced. So, Dizon becomes depth at both MLB and WLB. And he is a 7th, anyway so if you can get depth at the 7th round you have done pretty well for yourself.

tomorrow has come & I like it :)

although I'm feeling a little, well lets just say I'm in need of productivity enhancer :coffee:

Calais is a RDE Mario LDE. both are 6070 but Calais is leaner & quicker about 20 lbs. lighter. he has much better pass rushing skills using speed, long arms & use of quick hands to shed blockers.

Schaub our 2nd rd. pick again? oh well its a done deal.

Not as big of Cousins fan as some here, but if he fits Gibbs zbs then I'm all for him too.

Hart would present very good value in the 4th & add to depth.

If they drafted Marcus I think he would play FS. better speed than we have & can bring some lumber, similar to Demps.

Nelson & Dizon are two of my favorite prospects both can play in the league, however both will be selected long before here so if you can rig the draft this way, I'm all for it.

good knee jerk mock :music:

This pretty much echos my feelings as well.

Campbell is more of a pure passrusher than Mario. Mario is pretty much a complete DE. Campbell, while possessing ideal height and arm length along with other physical attributes, he is an ideal RDE. Campbell compares more to South Florida's George Selvie than Mario. Size shouldn't be the only thing we think of when comparing DEs. It's not like Campbell is a slouch at stopping the run, but he is just a natural at getting to the QB. He is leaner than Mario size wise as well, and is just quicker off the ball.

exactly.

wonder how many Texans fans have changed opinions since the Texans selected Mario over Bush & VY :lightbulb:

Calais is sick value @ #18

Haha. Yeah. Pre-season, Campbell was a top 5 pick. His team had a down year and flew under the radar so to speak. Scouts know about him. He physical attributes and physical projections are sick. Campbell is a top 10 talent, and top 5 IMO when you look at projections and potential. Getting him at 18 would be a steal. I don't advocate D-line with our pick, but I would be giddy if we landed Campbell at 18.

I'm guessing, of course (was not watching the SB w/Awysst) adding a RDE to weapons like Mario & Amboi is not that disimilar to adding Tuck on a Giants team with Strahan & Umenyiora :photos:

Tuck was also a discounted (3rd rd.) tall (6050) rangy edge speed rusher. it was thought as well he needed to get stronger in his upper & lower body. hows that working for you now scouts :pirate:

heres my ideal mock: its possible but probably unlikely

FA: resign demps, davis.. sign boss bailey, sopooga, drayton florence/jacque reeves, lehan or some1 of that ilk in FA (sounds like we'll be going after 'guys' in FA not the premier people)

Draft:
#18: calais
#29(trade a future 1st and this yrs 5th or something): anthony collins
3rd: matt forte/ray rice
4th: justice/wallace/pollak

id like to get a good ZB guard too (scheunning or some1) but it'll prob be some late rd 'nobody' or frye etc

I've got Calais going high on my mock on this site.

He is a great player. I think he goes in the top 10. As interesting as it sounds, I don't even think he will be there at 18.

Taking another D-Lineman would be a luxury pick at this point.

No Running Back
Too many holes in the secondary
LT

If you want a pure pass rusher, you can usually get them later.

I'm ok with Trufant or Asomugha for CB and Andre Davis. Whispers are that Demps may have set his price to high to return. FS has not been too high on Kube's list.

Your draft:

1. We have to fill holes. next draft we may go for the gravy. If STewart at #18 he is a must.
3. Oniel, I was interested too but he seems to be dropping (see link) size and speed look good but some see him more as a guard. http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/profile.php?pyid=19291

I am leaning towards Tony Hill who should fit well in ZBS and should be there when we pick.

4. You should be surprised if this RB is there in 4th. Even though he is dropping a good showing will boost him into 2-3.

Nice picks and agree on a lot of them but I will add my two cents to drafting Calais Campbell.

1st RD. Derrick Harvey | Florida | 6-4 262 4.75 | DE

3rd RD. Ray Rice | Rutgers | 5-9 205 4.48 - We might have to move up a little to land Emmitt Smith & Maurce Jones - Drew clone. RB

4th RD. Craig Steltz | L.S.U. | 6-2 209 4.55 | Safety

5th RD. Andre Fluellen | Florida St. | 6-4 280 5.00 | DT

6th RD. Jacob Tamme | Kentucky | 6-5 240 4.60 | TE

7th RD. Darius Reynaud | West Virginia | 5-10 200 4.45 | WR

Free Agent Signings:

CB - Trufant, Marcus UFA Seahawks - Potential Shut Down guy.

OLB - Bailey, Boss UFA Lions - Brings speed to LB Corps.

S - Wilson, Eugene UFA Patriots - More competition on the back end

RB - Jones, Julius UFA Cowboys - Sign to a 1 year Deal with an option for a 2nd and let him prove what he can and allow him to compete with young Ray Rice.

S - Wilson, Gibril UFA Giants - More comp at this position not to expensive.

DE - Odom, Antwan UFA Titans - Division Steal not to expensive.

CUT: Anthony Weaver DE, Ahman Green & Release Ron Dayne.

Wait. Are you saying that we sign all of these guys? Some of these guys are going to get more money than you think fist off, 2nd we would possibly be crippled by these signings in a few seasons. I think it would be a mistake to try to fill that many positions with higher end FA's.

Boss Baily is an injury concern and I dont want anything to do with him.

Marcus Trufant will likely re-sign with Seattle. And if you wanna pony up the doe for Trufant you may as well just go for Asante because they will probably get close to the same money. The kid from the Raiders will likely get the least of the top 3 but he will still be making some serious coin.

Eugene Wilson will want money unless he resigns with the Pats.

Julius Jones will want starter money not a 1 year deal with a 2nd year option contract. Someone is going to pay him.

I actually like the last 2 guys as options and could possibly see that happeneing.

Weaver and Green being released would be alot of dead money this year. Green will be the guy that you are wanting Jones to be wether you like it or not, and then he will get cut next year and it will cost us almost nothing.

Dayne doesnt need to be released as he is already a FA. But again don't be suprised when they resign him.

As far as DE's in the 1st round are concerned NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!:gun: :)

Seriously though. why should we spend another 1st rounder on a pass rusher when we can get a situational guy in the later rounds and keep Weaver on the team for running downs and save cap space?

I don't doubt that at all. But I would like to know more about these whispers. I haven't heard this before.

Don't forget, in the same draft that they took Tuck, they took Kiwanuka in the first round. He helped them a lot last year but was injured this season. So, they had 4 DEs that could get to the passer... that's in addition to first round pick Fred Robbins at DT three years ago.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. What I saw in the SB was pressure coming from all angles. I also saw possibly the best Oline in the league (based on the number of pro bowlers from the Oline) struggle mightily against the pressure. Sacks were coming from all over the place and the Oline never really looked comfortable. Thus it shows that a good pass rush can beat a good o line. Thus my thinking for taking the pass rushing Calais with the first pick. Remember: Manning, VY, and Gerrard are in our division. Manning and Gerrard have quick releases so we need to get in their face and make them uncomfortable. VY also tends to not play as well when he is being hurried.

Very good post. You are right. The Giants have invested heavily in their D line and it worked. Their D backs are not as strong but they only need to play adequately with that kind of a D line. Thats what I want to do here in Htown: Monster D line that inspires fear in the opposing QB with DB that can cover and not give up big passes.

I don't doubt that at all. But I would like to know more about these whispers. I haven't heard this before.
I am pretty sure I heard this on 610 radio in afternoon. Matt Jackson? I've tried to track it down since but to no avail. If I was his agent, I would see what others would pay before signing with Texans.
