Are we re-signing anyone???

Can't we be resigning our own Free Agents right now? I would have thought we would have at least resigned a few guys by now. Especially Defense.

I don't think it's that period yet. When you start hearing teams signing their UFA's then we'll know. RIght now I think players are just getting "tendered" to deals.

we're allowed resign FA's now if we want to but look around at all the other teams- hardly nobody is doing it yet

Key dates:

2/7-21 Window for teams to designate franchise and transition tags
2/11 First day teams can cut players
2/20-26 Scouting combine (probably also aired by NFLN)
2/28 Deadline to tender RFAs and ERFAs
2/29 Free agency and trading window opens
4/18 Deadline for RFA offer sheets
4/26-27 2008 NFL Draft

According to Smith and Kubiak they are still evaluating our guys, the prospective FAs, and the draft. You need to figure out if the guy you have is better then the guy you are trying to sign. Or do you think you can upgrade by letting someone go.

I gotta little birdy on my shoulder telling me we MAY lose Von Hutchinson to the dreaded cowpolkes. And Andre Davis, if someone offers him #1 money, the texans will let him walk. Just brace yourselves there boys and gurls.

Davis is twenty-eight, and this is his last chance at the brass ring. If someone offers him the farm he's got to take the deal. He's going to be one of the very hot FAs this year. On the one hand you can say it sucks we'll lose a very good and productive player. On the other hand, the first sign there is some legitmate tallent on the club is when people steal them from you.

Nobody is going to offer Andre Davis WR1 money...unless Casserly is the GM somewhere and I'm not aware of it. If we had a NFL caliber secondary losing Hutchinson would be like losing Hodgdon from our offensive line. I'm not sure I'll have to brace for that one.

I assume we mean Von Hutchins?

I agree here. Hutchins can hit the road unless we could bring him back dirt cheap as depth.

IMO, AD will be a Texan. If he demands too much money for a good half season, then he can leave as well. SmithGM (& Co) has shown smarts with the cap and contract numbers so I'm not worried about it.

I don't know...I can the Titans doing it. They have TONS of cap space, and they are desperate for some WR's. Not to mention AD would make a good return man for them since they lost Pacman.

Andre Davis is a well spoken, decent person and a good team mate. That doesn't sound like a tack to me...

I dunno Dan Synder is always around. He gave Randle El that insane contract.

Honestly I see AD here next year. I think the FO has been candid in their want to re-sign him and as Smith put it he "fits here". As FA receiver I don't know of a much more attractive situation. An established #1 and an offense despite losing the starting QB, RB and so many turnovers still finished 6 or 7th in offense. There's something brewing here and I hope he realizes that AND wants to be a part of it.

IIRC, he'd cost us quite a bit to cut him. He'll be here next season.

We were all disappointed with Green's first year with Houston. I am always the first to give the benifit of the doubt and we gave Davis(Williams) OTAs at least. That still didn't work but Davis didn't have the resemee that Green has. Saying this, Kubiak seems to have learned from his mistakes so Green will probably cut him no matter what.

Just found out the answer today and it was what I thought.

The 500k is a roster bonus and the 200k is an off-season workout bonus (each year through '10).

The unique thing about his roster bonus is that it's not a lump sum. It's paid incrementally - $31,250 per game for games that he's on the 45 man active roster. Smart.

The workout bonus is paid only if he participates in at least 90% of the off season program.

My earlier post #10 is still accurate and it closes the loop on posts #14 and #31.

Green would cost $3.75 million on the cap to cut (likely spread over two years) if he was cut, and he could cost as much as $5.75 million on the cap to keep this year if he was active for every game and met his workout bonus criteria. Of course if he was active for all 16 games and produced like a RB1 should, he would be worth $5.75 million on the cap.

I can see the FO doing the same thing they did with Vonta Leach (and maybe Ron Dayne) last year.

Seems like Rick Smith has no problem letting another team negotiate with his free agents. If it's somebody he wants to keep around, then he just matches the offer.

I'm really hoping that we can keep Andre Davis and Will Demps around this offseason.

I'm not saying I want him to return. I just think he'll be here next season if healthy.

Thanks I-Cak. I still have a strong hunch he'll be around next season. I might be wrong, by George it wouldn't be the first time.

Little different deal. Leach was a RFA so the Texans had the right to match the offer. Davis and Demps are UFA's so the Texans have nothing but a year's loyalty to having matching make them return.

I can see Davis resigning with us.

I've heard he's really grateful for us giving him the chance that no one else would. He also likes it here, so I'm sure he'll get his agent to sign where he wants. ;)

I think a call from Matt and AJ to Davis saying "help us bring this team to the play offs" would not hurt. Demps may not have been a PB alternate on most other teams.

Rick Smith already had dinner with Andre Davis and Gary Kubiak visited Andre and his wife at home Wed night. They are actively courting him.

:texflag:

Why all the hate for Hutchins???

I agree he's not the best player we have in the secondary but part of building a great team is having quality back ups. If you don't think Hutchins is a decent back up for us than that's fine.

The way I see it, the secondary is a HUGE weakness on our team. On top of that, we've had an incredible amount of injuries to them. IMO, Hutchins is a versatile guy that can go in a play CB or FS if we really need him to. Obviously he's probably not the guy we really want starting but if we got injuries- we gotta put somebody else in.

So if we DON'T re-sign von hutchins...we have to pick somebody else up to fill his shoes. His contract isn't all that big if i remember correctly. Bennett is locked in as a starter. Dunta will be on IR for most of the year. Demps is a FA we should look at bringing back. Earl is coming off injury, and we have CC Brown. Backup CB's are Petey Faggins, Jamar Fletcher, and Dexter Wynn.

I'm one that would really like to see the addition of a good CB via FA/Draft. Even with that I still want to re-sign Hutchins. Who's the better player you sign to take Hutchins spot???

You telling me you'd rather Faggins/Fletcher/Wynn play instead? I hear people calling for all of them to get cut. We can't go into next season with only 4 or 5 DB's...at least that's my thinking. Should be really interesting to see what Rhodes has up his sleeve.

Very good news to hear. Davis is a must re-sign in my opinion. I wouldn't be too surprised to see Mathis get the boot (pun intended) before too long. Davis proved this season that he can get hit hard, take it for the team, play banged up, AND still produce. You don't let a player like that walk unless like some of you say he's asking for #1 money, which he shouldn't be. He's invaluable as a WR and a KR for us.

The way I see it...WR becomes another 'hole' if Davis leaves. Johnson is a stud, Walter is solid, Jacoby really needs more time to develop. If Davis leaves...I might be eyeing Malcolm Kelly in the 1st round....and that's not something I really want to do given our need at LT, RB, CB, etc.

I didn't show hate. I merely pointed out he wouldn't be worth keeping if he was looking for some sort of raise. Like I mentioned in my post, I'd have no problem re-signing him cheap for depth purposes only.

IMO, Fletcher should've gotten the nod at CB when Dunta went down. :)

Over Bennett?! Fletcher got his shot. Had he been better than the rookie, he would have started. He's not. He's too short and he's not the hitter Bennett is; and that's not to say anyone will mistake Bennett for Rodney Harrison or anything... but truth is Fletcher ain't really much more than half a notch better than Petey Faggins.

Now if you meant he should have started at #2 over Faggins... I doubt anyone will argue with you about that.

I have a question: Who is this Roc Alexander that we've been carrying on our roster for the past two seasons??

I have a question: Who is this Roc Alexander that we've been carrying on our roster for the past two seasons??

Alexander was picked up on waivers from the Broncos in 2006 (caught up in numbers in Denver). Shortly thereafter, he sustained a torn ACL and was placed on IR for the 2006 season. In preseason 2007, he was resigned, determined not to be ready for a comeback from his injury and was placed on IR for the 2007 season.

What type of player is he???????.......This is his draft profile:

Position: CB
Class: Sr
School: Washington
Conference: Pac-10
Ht., Wt.: 5'11, 185
40 Time: 4.38
Grade: 3.23

BIO: Played in eight games as a senior and totaled 25/0/1 defensively also averaging 20.6 yards on 13 kick returns. Missed seven games as a junior with a shoulder injury and credited with 22/3 on the season. Defensive numbers as a sophomore were 26/4/11 after leading the conference with a 29.2-yard average on kick returns.

POSITIVES: Explosive, athletic corner with average instincts and poor durability. Quick footed off the line, fluid transitioning to run with opponents and plays to his timed 40 speed. Easily runs downfield with opponents, displays a quick closing burst as well as recovery speed. Immediately plants then breaks on the throw and adjusts well to defend the pass.

NEGATIVES: Does not slow opponents with jams and marginal skills in run defense. Hesitant reacting and slow turning back when the ball's in the air. Falls asleep and gets beaten. Durability is a major concern.

ANALYSIS: From an athletic point of view, Alexander is a physically gifted prospect that will turn heads, but the major underlying factors most will focus on are the number of receptions he gives up and past injury history. Someone may take a flier on him in the late rounds.

PROJECTION: Undrafted Free Agent

.........There should be numerous concerns reflected. The best I can make out is that his main value to the Texans was projected as a kick returner. Recurrent theme and current legitimate ongoing question...............durability, durability, durability.......

IIRC, Bennett had already surpassed Faggins and was playing the #2 for a game or two before Dunta went down. So, no I was not talking about over Bennett. Fletch should've been playing instead of Von.:shades:

hmmm... I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. IMHO, Fletcher is marginally better in coverage and Hutchins is significantly better against the run. So since teams tend to run on 1st & 2nd down, generally speaking, you put in the guy who is best against the run. IIRC, Fletch was inserted on obvious passing downs as either the #2 or #3 CB.

from the HT.com site...
http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?STORY_ID=4153

Veteran Von Hutchins was a versatile contributor, starting eight games at free safety and the final seven at cornerback. He finished third on the team and led all Texans defensive backs with 93 tackles, including 77 solos.
I find it interesting that in an article about the secondary, from the Texans' official website, Fletcher's name is only mentioned once.
In reserve duties, Fletcher recorded 13 tackles, including 12 solos, and was a valuable special teams player.
Wonder if there's a message there...?

Just as an aside, Roc Alexander was apart of the University of Washington crew that won the Rose Bowl and shamed the entire school while doing so.

If ever you think that McNair or Kubiak or Smith might not take a guy cause of character issues, you can think of Roc Alexander, whom they've stuck with for two years through injuries. He's about as non-character as you can get (Without actually being Jerramy Stephens).

Yeah but you aren't really investing a whole lot in him. It's not like he is a 1st rounder or anything.

That doesn't make it better. If he's a marginal talent and on the cusp of being cut anyway, it shows a massive disregard for character to keep him around.

Unless, unlike Jerramy Stevens, he's actually managed to turn his life around.

You ask me, guys like that are living on borrowed time.

Yeah but you aren't really investing a whole lot in him. It's not like he is a 1st rounder or anything.

Oh no, without a doubt he is definitely no more than a warm body and that's it. But a lot of people talk about how the Texans only go after guys who are "niiiiiice" when really that isn't all the way true. Just mostly true. And probably true about any player that is a 1st round draft pick/Top FA signing/Player of a high profile position.

But yes, even the niiiiiiice Houston Texans have a dirtbag on their team.
