Georgia Frontiere, Rams owner who moved team to St. Louis, dies

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Georgia Frontiere, the St. Louis native who became a hometown hero when she brought the NFL's Rams from Los Angeles in 1995, died Friday. She was 80.

Frontiere had been hospitalized for breast cancer for several months, the Rams said in a statement posted on their Web site.

"Georgia Frontiere was the first lady of sports in her native St. Louis," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement that also praised her philanthropy and concern for retired NFL players.

"Our mom was dedicated to being more than the owner of a football team," daughter Lucia Rodriguez and son Chip Rosenbloom said in the team's statement.

"She loved the Rams' players, coaches, and staff. The warmth and generosity she exuded will never be forgotten."

The one-time nightclub singer was married seven times, starting at age 15. Her sixth husband, Carroll Rosenbloom, owned the Los Angeles Rams at the time of his drowning death in 1979.

The Rams moved twice under Frontiere's leadership, first relocating from the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1980 to Anaheim, 35 miles away.

I became a die hard Rams in 1986 because my dad wouldn't let me watch the cowboys as a kid because he got to nervous watching them. I then decded I needed to change my team if I wasn't able to watch my favorite team. I fell in love with Eric Dickerson in 1986. I stuck to the rams until 2004 when I wanted to follow a local team with my kids. Now I am A Texans season ticket holder. But I will always remember the good times the Rams gave me. Especially the magical 1999 season with an uknown Qb who use to bag groceries.

R.I.P. Georgia and thanks for the memories.
 
I'm sorry, I am not a fan of this owner. She was no different from the carpet baggers who took teams from Baltimore, Oakland, Cleveland, Houston, and St Louis in the first place.

Her biggest legacy is that she abandoned L.A. and thus gave every NFL owner the perfect bargaining chip to use against any town that dares to deny them a stadium deal fit for Midas himself. L.A. without a team in it has been far more valuable to the NFL owners than it ever could be with a team playing there.

The Cardinals belong in St. Louis.
The Rams belong in L.A.
The Oilers belong in Houston (and the Titans belong in a history book).
The Browns belong in Cleveland (and thankfully that's corrected)
The Raiders belong in Oakland (and Al Davis belongs in the third circle of hell).

When Georgia Frontiere passed away that was just one carpet bagger down and 5 to go.

Actually, the Rams belong in Cleveland and the Cardinals belong in Chicago because that is where thay started. Teams move to other cities. Deal with it.

The Cleveland Rams and Chicago Cardinals moves did not take place in the modern era of the NFL. There is an enormous difference between these two examples you gave and the fairly recent phenomenon of teams holding up their respective city almost at gunpoint and demanding palaces be built for them.

The Irsays, Davis', Bidwells, Modells, Adams', and Frontieres of the world were a major part of bringing about what's wrong with the NFL today. Carpetbagger owners are what they are and when they die it doesn't mean that they get their slate wiped clean.
 
I'm in total agreement with you Herv. She showed women it's not what you do. It's who you do. Who is the new Rams owner?
