Offseason:looking at the Texan Secondary

Wolf

100% Texan
Jan. 4, 2008

Last offseason, the secondary was a position of need. This offseason, the need is more urgent, considering that head coach Gary Kubiak has said CB Dunta Robinson will be out until at least midseason because of knee and hamstring injuries. Also, five key defensive backs, all safeties — Will Demps, Glenn Earl, Von Hutchins and Jason Simmons (unrestricted) and C.C. Brown (restricted) — hit free agency. Demps, a Pro Bowl alternate, and Hutchins, who can also play cornerback, could attract the most interest in free agency. Indeed, the Texans' secondary could look vastly different next season, and reinforcements and/or replacements could come in free agency or the draft. One player not going anywhere is CB Fred Bennett, who likely has locked up a starting role in 2008 after flashing potential as a rookie.

so maybe 2009 for D-rob (somehow when Texans say midseason, that means out for the season) based on history

I am really excited about Fred Bennett's potential. 2 of the reasons he slid to the 4th round in the draft and several posters on this forum were apprehensive about his selection were his ball skills and physicality. I think he proved that those are 2 of his strengths.

As impressive as many of the FA's on Wolf's list may be to the Texans, I don't believe that they will be all that sought with ( if accompanied by high price tags) after by other teams ...........not even Demps........for the most part, we should be able to keep those we want and let the others walk by our own choice.

sorry i dont see anything to get excited about with von (especially as a starter).. hes somewhat decent (>faggins, fletch) but got exposed imo far moreso than freddy late on in the season

I assume you mean Malcolm Jenkins-Ohio St.?

If so, I agree that would be a great choice.

Has Malcolm Jenkins declared yet? If so I think he's the first corner off the board, next is probably Talib. Mike Jenkins is a player as well that will get consideration and Jack Ikegwuonu who could be great CB/FS type of guy if we trade down and recoup another pick or two.

No. Mike Jenkins from the University of South Florida. He is the best corner in this draft IMO. He made the opposite corner for the Bulls (Trae Williams) look great this season by forcing teams away from his side, last year as well.

I should also add Antoine Cason to the list. I would be happy with any of these three guys (Cason, Mike Jenkins, and Talib)

Not so high on Malcolm Jenkins. Wouldn't be upset with him, but I am just not so sure how great he is in man coverage. I saw him get beat throughout the season, and Brandon Lafell (who is from Houston by the way) beat him pretty bad last night as well. To his credit, it was a bad defensive call by the Buckeyes. You just can't leave a guy like Lafell in the slot with no safety help and man coverage. I don't care who the corner is.

I don't want to sound like I am bashing the guy but the pick he had last night was an obvious mis-communication between Flynn and his receiver. Still got to give Malcolm Jenksin credit for making the play though.

Anyone of the Jenkins would be a significant upgrade in our secondary but if I'm on the board, I'm picking a LT. But I do agree that Mike Jenkins is the #1 CB in this years draft.
