Jamaal Charles going Pro

"UT is a wonderful place and everyone has been so good to me. But, playing in the NFL has always been my dream and when the NFL report came back, I was happy with the grade and felt like it was best for me to enter the draft," Charles said in a statement.
A week ago, Charles said he wouldn't jump unless he received a 1st round grade. Guess that's what he got.

I like his speed a lot and think he could definitely help the Texans rushing attack, but he'd have to show rapid improvement in his pass blocking and the ability to hold on to the football before he'd crack the starting lineup.

Selvin Young went undrafted last year. I'll be interested in seeing how high Charles' stock goes in late April. He'd make a good fourth round pick IMO.

This'll sound crazy coming from a Longhorn, but I'm not all that interested.

I've probably seen every college game that he's played in and I always thought he was overrated. He fumbles too much, he gets hurt too much, and he can't run between the tackles.

I'm a little more partial to Chris Ogbannaya myself anyway.

Whether we like it or not, "Ronnie" isn't going anywhere for the mere reason that he can hang onto the rock. The best that we can hope for is an RB that brings some speed and elusiveness to the table. There should be plenty of those left in the 3rd round.

The Texans need an LT in the first round. period. I don't care which skill player comes out or where he went to school.

I can see Charles going early to mid second. I can also see him being a back that shares the backfield but gets the majority of the carries.

This guy has speed, real speed. He won the Big 12 100 meter event in the last year or 2 with what, a 10.2 or 10.3 time ?
But is that all we are talking about here, a real fast guy, a track guy, and
nothing more ?

I would love to trade out 18th pick down for a later first and a second and draft a OT/S with one of those picks and then Charles with the other than go into the third round with 2 of the three big need positions filled

Maybe to the Titans splitting carries with LenWhale?

Wouldn't surprise me. Bud obviously regrets leaving Texas so to make up for that he just drafts every player coming out of UT. BTW, he can have him. This guy fumbles way too much and at the worst times.

I don't see why he wouldn't be considered. I mean look at what Selvin Young, who went undrafted, did. Charles has more skill than SY and is 6'1, 205. SY is listed at 5'11, 207. My problem would be the fumbles.

Selvin's success with the Broncos will work to Jamaal's favor. And the NFL loves stopwatch speed, and Charles should be among the fastest at the combine.

Titans draft Sweed and Charles. Then people here will moan and complain about not drafting the "hometown" guy.

That's good for us. We need more underclassemen to delcare because it will increase the number of good players available to us.

Charles would finally give us that speed in the backfield but he does seem to fumble a lot. He did, however, do a good job this season of holding on to the ball. I'd also see him as a guy that would succeed in the zone-blocking system. Charles really doesn't dance, his problem is that he tries to bounce everything to the outside. In zone-blocking, he be able to make that one cut and use his speed to get up the field.

And everyone knows Studdard is on this team so when people bring up the fact that the Texans don't draft Longhorns, others can bring up the little used Kasey Studdard. Duh. lol

Don't forget Sloan Thomas.

Exactly. They live for that stuff and the guy is a burner and track guy that is actually a true football player. As I said on the earlier page is a little bigger than people think too...I wouldn't call him "scat."

I dont think fumbling should be as big of an issue as others make it out to be. More often than not its a technique issue, im sure he'd improve markedly in holding onto the rock after being in an NFL training camp.

Heck, Tiki Barber was a fumbler until Tom Coughlin came to town and then he was one of the most sure-handed backs in the league!!!

Jamaal without a doubt is an exceptional athlete, football player and track star. If he can learn to hang on to the football, he could make an excellent pro. I sound like a longhorn homer right now, but i'm actually an aggie, but i watched him alot in high school and occasionally in college. He will most likely have a very good combine, and probably will be drafted late in the first round. That being said, i'd rather have Jonathan Stewart:fans:

I want Jamaal.

I am a Longhorn that grew up in the Golden Triangle so I am doubly-biased.

If we can trade down and still get him, fine. If not, take him at 18.

I'm an admitted homer but I truly believe that in Kubiak's system Jamaal could be a game breaker.

:texflag:

1st rd: Sweed
3rd rd: Charles
4th rd: Mack Brown's stepson
5th rd: UT Water boy
6th rd: UT Ball boy
7th rd: UT Walk on

Woot. Go Horns!!!! Finally the Texans draft them hometown hero studs!!!!

Disclaimer: I'm just joking Horn fans.

no thanks i dont want him in our backfield ans no i dont hate the horns. the kid is fast but he fumbles way too much and i will say this i am so tired of longhorns fans crying about not having any longhorns on the team. i wonder what some aggie fans think about also having just mckinney on the team. i just want the team to draft the better players not based on schools

No doubt. The fumbling wasn't much of an issue until this season.

I'll pin this on Greg Davis, too. His RB's get so cocky that they start thinking the football is the 6-pack of tallboys that they're about to take to the Omega party after the game.

Teaching how to carry a ball might not be part of an OC's job, but Greg Davis gets paid enough that it should never be an issue.

I would wager that 60% of the people in this thread claiming "fumbling" as a reason have not seen 25% of his college games. Possibly combined.

Charles will be a fine pro IMO. He doesn't play around in the backfield. He isn't exactly a 1 cut back, but he likes to cut back. He knows how to go around a blocker. He knows how to use them, and then he can outrun people. I will also wager that he will be a better pro than Stewart.

I have watched a lot of texas games and he has wasnt that impressive after the first three games of this year except against the cornhuskers, sun devils and osu. he had a great 2005 year but 2006 he sucked it up. Stewart may not have his speed but he atleast can but it up the middle between tackles. I am not saying that charles hasnt gone between the tackles he just doesnt do it a lot. He reminds me more of a bush kind of player where he does his best work "in space"

Wrong. Charles had a well documented fumbling problem. He improved as the season went on, but holding on to the ball has been a major concern.

IMO, I highly doubt we go with a RB in the first round, but if for some reason we do I'd rather have Rashard Mendenhall over Stewart and Charles.

Personally, I think we'll be drafting a DB in the first. Possibly a LT if available. :shades:

Kubiak won't go with someone with a fumbling problem. We had Echemandu - he fumble once and was cut. In training camp this year he was all over Chris Taylor for fumbling. Fumbling = Kubiak's pet peeve & mine too.

RBs not getting the ball into the EZ from inside the 5 is my pet peeve.

Charles reminds me somewhat of Portis. A little short, compact, track speed. He has good vision and the ability to completely cut back across the field. Blocking is another concern, but he should be a top "Denver Style" RB in this draft.

Both are extremely fast & elusive. Both have not shown the ability to break tackles between the tackles. (My definition of a scat back). I am a UT fan.

I think it was a mistake for him to declare. I'm a huge Longhorn fan, as are most of my friends, and we all said the same thing. He's not ready. Nobody denies his speed but it's lack of pass protection and inability to run in-between the tackles that hurts him. Plus, he fumbled too much in his three years here. He should have stayed for his senior year and assured himself of going in the first round.

Pretty much exactly what me and my buddies said. One thing I would like to add to this is that running the ball out of the shotgun was not the best thing for Charles. He is much more explosive getting the ball on the run out of a legitimate offensive formation which Greg Davis has yet to identify. I would not hesitate to draft him in a later round if he falls. Speed makes those small holes just a little bit wider.

Studdard used to be babysat by Kubiak's wife. Kubes has known him since he was a kid. Family friends. Still barely got him drafted at all though (6th Round i believe)

True, his dad Dave Studdard played with the Broncos for about 10 years and with Kubiak for about 4-5 years.

This is what I think too. I think whomever gave him a 1st round grade was severely overrating him and setting him up for a draft failure.

He might sneak into the 1st with an excellent combine, but his well documented fumblitis will hurt his stock a little. I just think there's too much talent at the top of the RB class for him to think he'll slide into the first. McFadden, Stewart, Mendenhall, Jones, and maybe even Rice are above him in talent and skill.

His 4.3 40 is going to raise a few eyebrows though.

He also has Olive Oyl ankles and bird legs. The thing that makes him fast will also make him injury prone. Agreed up there, third round. If the price is right I'll except the risk.

Correct me if I'm worng wasn't there a Denver connection between Kubes and Studard's dad ? Agreed up there also...hell will freeze over befor the Texan's draft another longhorn. Seven years makes it more than a trend.
