The best Back-up to emerge from all of our injuries???

euro-Texan

Rookie
I'm just thinking here, that had we stayed healthy we would probably have a better record and a wildcard playoff birth. Since that didn't happen, who were the best no-names, back-ups, bench warmers, who most likely would have never seen playing time without the hardships that have struck our starters, but now might have earned a starting role next year?

Von Hutchins. He stepped in at safety, then he moved to corner. He's consistently made plays. He gets my vote for most valuable non-star on the team. If he and Demps are the starting safeties next year, and Bennett and Robinson are the corners, I'll stop hyperventilating about the secondary. Unfortunately, Robinson won't be back next year at full strength.

I'm thinking during the pre-season that Davis was around 5-6 depth wise as far as making the team and now.... We better buy this guy a tractor or something.

Don't want to derail this thread (my votes are Demps and Bennett), but based on your vote, do you think Von was giving up the "short" route to protect against getting burned by Marshall last night? Seemed that he was getting chewed up early and I was already a few beers in but did the team scheme Marshall different in the second half, or did Von change his coverage technique. Don't think he played bad at all, just an observation that I wanted to follow up on with someone that might have had a clearer head last night.

Going into the season, our WR corps was a question. Our secondary was not. We all knew exactly what we had in the secondary - Robinson and a bunch of trash. Then we have injuries to Earl and Simmons, so Hutchins got his chance. The secondary just had their best game of the season, and they have been quietly doing pretty well since Faggins sat down.

I still say Hutchins, and that's not to take anything away from any other player. We've had a lot of guys step it up.

That's my assessment. The Broncos have been making big plays lately, and Cutler is really coming into his own. Marshall is probably the best WR in the NFL that no one knows about. That guy will be a perennial Pro Bowl WR, I think. Better to give up the underneath stuff in that situation. But I wasn't basing my vote on just last night's game, nor just on Hutchins' individual play. He's really shored up a weak spot. So has Demps, lately, but Hutchins was in there from the time Simmons got injured.

based on last night alone, I would say Demps. He was a monster, had he made those pics he would have been the MVP for sure. As far as my original question was more based on who might have never started a game for us had the injuy bug not hit. but now has earned a spot

No...understood, I just wansn't keying on VH last night except on the replays of Marshall's catches and then maybe the plays right after that an saw him giving Marshall a pretty good pad. Smart play, give up 4-5 short plays instead of one big one.

Andre Davis

Sage Rosenfels

I think Bennett would have got the nod at starter eventually, and after we got Will Demps, I figured he'd play eventually as well.

Sage?

Oh how the rumblings are going to start getting louder.

Well I sure wish hey would die down. Sage is a GREAT back-up, but Shaub has done nothing to lose the job. He has played quality ball all year and this whole phantom "intangible" crap has mesed with peoples thinking. I think there are already 10 or 12 threads on this issue though

Agreed. I was really hot for a CB at the bottom of the first two weeks ago. Are these guys growing up ? Or did Jon Hoke and Richard Smith suddenly become stinking geniuses over the course of two weeks ? Denver just came off a week where they blew out K.C. . Tired legs or well motivted guys in great scheme ? From my tree, it looks as though Kubiack took the hand cuffs off the DC and the DB coach and let slip the dogs of war. Kubick wanted this one baaaad.

I don't know 'bout "the best"...but 65's debute has got to rank as one of the best most improbable among o-lineman. I never saw it coming. That's for sure.

I'm not disagreeing with you. Sage has been playing lights out and would not have seen a single snap had Matt not gotten hurt.

Sage will have to pry the job from Schaub's dead cold hands.

Your right there are plenty of threads on this already. Id like to flip it on you and say that Schaub is a great backup, but Sage has done nothing to lose the starting job so far.

Watching the game a second time opened my eyes a little on the Sage hype. I feel Shaub would have hit Leach in the E/Z. Okay there I said it.

Bennett and Davis. I'd say Demps, but he hasn't played as much as the other two guys, and they went on a good stretch of playing some solid football. I like Demps, I just feel that Bennett and Dre have done it more.

Schaub has not been so great in the red zone, dont know why you would give him the benifit of the doubt like that. Sage converted on 3rd downs and placed the ball perfectly on some difficult throws. And he took ZERO sacks the whole game. Some people will never be satisified I guess.

For a long time Schaub hadn't been very good in the red zone, but I think that we underappreciate what the presence of AJ does to opposing defenses. In the last two games, we've seen little dump offs to AJ where they just let him do his thing and score, and defenses have to respect that, which really opens up things for our offense.

And yes, Sage took ZERO sacks the whole game. GREAT game for the offensive line...how much of that do you REALLY atribute to Sage Rosenfels avoiding sacks? One of Schaub's biggest plusses is his pocket presence, isn't it? So I don't see much of a difference there...

Except Faggins gave up the short and long route. He has played nicly and if hee was a 3rd CB and back up safty, Id be very content next year. But my vote goes to Ron Dayne and Andre Davis. Both guys are invaluable to us. Pair Dayne with a speed guy and we could be set for a while at RB. Davis is our #2.5 WR. Both have been great signings.

The O-line played a great game and gave Sage time to throw. But when a QB takes zero sacks the whole game, that must be at least partially attributed to smart play at the QB position. Especially considering that he was throwing against the best coverage unit in the NFL and the WR were taking time to get open.

AJ certainly does open up our offense a lot, there aint no denying that. Somehow we still lost to the Browns and the Titans with AJ back, what gives?

Yep, those were two heartbreaking losses that IMO could have gone either way. I never said having AJ was a guaranteed win.

Sage is just a diffent QB the Matt. Sage gets rid of the ball quicker then Matt, but takes more chances then Matt. Matt also gets rid of the ball quickly, especially compared to "he who shall not be talked about on this board", but is a little more conservative.

Fact is we have two great QBs. Both of whom can start for a bunch of teams in the NFL.

Matt is our QB of the future here. Why? Because his contract money says he is. When Sage's contract is up, he will probably move on to a place that can pay him a lot more then we can as a back up. Its an unfortunate economic reality of the game.

Vast disagreement on this thread is a good thing.

What we are seeing has a lot to do with overwhelming buy-in by 53 guys to coach and system.

Robinson on the Right...Bennett on the Left...it's gonna be *ON LIKE NECKBONES next year baby!

* in this particular instance "on" is pronounced as "own."

Andre Davis and Von Hutchins... Prolly Von Hutchins because I had absolutely no expectations with him on the field.

Albert Haynesworth would beg to differ. He'd rather play Schaub any day over Rosenfels. :shades:

Considering our team's past history with sack records, I'd say it's been amazing this year that both our QBs have such low numbers. Schaub was hurt after releasing the ball both times, and that could happen to any given QB.

yep, and I would not be surprised if we parlay Sage's worth into a trade for draft picks and/or players. I'd like to have him as our backup, but we know how the business of football works.

There are a lot of guys that really stepped it up. I would say that Fred Bennett is quickly becoming a fantastic player. Other guys would include Andre Davis, Ron Dayne, and Sage Rosenfels. One other guy has been RG Mike Brisiel. He has been very solid.

I would say Dayne, but because we'll most likely end up getting another RB and Dayne being the backup once again, he's not on my list.

Bennett's my favorite rookie, and I think he should start next season.

Andre Davis is another obvious pick.

I think Daynes' stock has risen due to the effect he has late in season against banged up D-lines. He really punishes them. Before we played the Browns I was on their "dawgbones" site and some of them were talking about what a terrible player Davis was. I sure haven't goteen that felling at all about him. He fits in this system well and I hope we give him a payday. He will give JJ some time to develop and put up numbers in the process. Von and Fred have been part of a more complete backfield than I remember even with D-rob. NOTE: D-ROB is still the best pound for pound CB in the league, but talk about stepping up while he's down. After I watched the replay of the game, Demps really stood out.

Yep, he's surprised me too. Mike was basically a Practice Squad player his whole career, and he really stepped up after the injury of Fred Weary. So he surprised me as well as Bennett, Davis, Walter and Hutchins. Actually the whole receiver squad (maybe except for Jacoby) surprised me this year. And I'm pleasently surprised with our decimated secondary. :fans:

I have a few on my mind and won't put them in any certain order

Sage, Fred Bennett, Von Hutchins and Will Demps.
