Roof: Open or Closed

I know the roof policy is 50-80, but I saw the high projected high for the day @ 58 with a 30% chance of rain. I'm guessing game time kickoff will fall just under 50 degrees.

Has anyone heard what the Texans are planning?

Here's to hoping the roof is open, even if just falling under. I'm thinking we'd like to showcase our stadium with the roof open for the prime time audience.
 
Can we just seal the roof shut and give the taxpayers about $20 million back or however much it took to make it retractable?

Right on. What a freaking travesty. Football is meant to be played outdoors. The fact that the roof was closed yesterday is proof that the retractable roof was a huge waste of money...

To many season ticket holders probably complained about being to hot, or to cold, or to wet, or to sunny, or they can't scalp the tickets on the sunny side of the field........
 
I hate how the roof is always closed. just weld it shut and rename the place the Reliant Dome. If they're not going to open it on a day like yesterday, when will they? Here's what got me, Texans official website said the roof was closed due to there being a chance of rain. At the same time, the Texans had uncovered merchandise stands all around the stadium.
 
Be careful what you wish for......remember the Pittsburgh game (it wasn't just the sunny side folks who were dieing like the proverbial flies) and then there is the Toilet Bowl - ye gads - talk about a travesty!

Perhaps their new roof policy is a bit of an overreaction - but better than 112 on the field. That was an experience I would just as soon never have again.

I do agree that the roof should be open Thursday night - cold, rain, or sleet - it looks better on TV. A little sacrifice for positive media exposure.
 
The problem is ventilation. The stadium was designed very poorly. Even on a very nice day outside, the conditions inside the stadium can be very poor if the roof is open. There's NO breeze, so sitting in direct sunlight is not comfortable. It's gets too hot and stuffy inside unless it's really nice and cool outside. The lower end of the threshold should be more like 30 instead of 50. If it's 40 outside, it would be really nice inside.

The 50-80 rule is also flawed because it doesn't account for sunshine. A night game at 80 degress would be really nice. A sunny afternoon game at 80 would be much different.

The roof should be open for all night games (except pre-season) unless there's a monsoon.

Open it for this Thursday. I don't care if its raining, big whoop.

The atmosphere for the Packers prime time game (rainy/cold) was fantastic with the roof open. Was chilly inside the stadium and actually FELT like a football game.

I am guessing it will be open.

Personally, I have never experienced a day where it would be too cold in Houston for football. The KC night game was awesome.

Remember The Golden Rules!

If the weather is 50ish to 60ish on Thursday, I think an open roof would be nice. It was a lot colder than that on Thanksgiving Day, and I loved it. I wasn't sitting the the section to get the snowfall, but the cold weather was wonderful.

If you are talking about the Packers game here, the roof was closed for that game.
 
I just spoke with the Texans and as of now (12:40pm Tues), barring possible rain, the roof is to be OPEN!!! :doot:

It's ridiculous that we're in mid-December and just now getting our first open-roof game. Remember before the first season when the rule was, "as long as there's no lightning and the winds don't exceed 30 mph, the roof will always be open"?

I miss those days...

man, I agree 100%. Over 80 degrees and sunny, I can see the point, but it should never be closed because it is too cold. It is never too cold in Houston for football!!

The Texans should re-visit this 50-80 rule this offseason.
 
If it's 20 degrees outside and rainy, leave the roof open....I don't care.
But if it's 90 degrees/sunny and humid...shut the dang thing. The Steelers game in 05' was brutal in the Bullpen.

I just don't think there should be some set rule. No way should the roof have been closed this past Sunday. It was 81, cloudy, and breezy. It should always be a gametime decision, not some stupid standardized rule.
 
Weather.com is predicting mid to low 50's, but they also show a 50% chance of rain. I think it'll be closed.:pirate:
 
I'm not complaining about the roof.

I complained all of 2005, and I'm still standing by the policy. This is houston, it's hot!

I want it open Thursday, though.
 
I could care less about the roof, either way. I'm looking down at the field, not up at the roof!
 
The National Weather Service provides the most reliable forecasts.

Here's their forecast for game time Thursday night:

Thursday, December 13 at 7pm
Temperature: 56°F Dewpoint: 48°F Wind Chill: N/A Surface Wind: NNE 7mph
Sky Cover: 72% Precipitation Potential: 20% Relative Humidity: 74%

The 11 pm forecast is basically the same with temps around 53 or so...

I prefer the roof open. I don't look up when the game is going on either, but I'm in the lower level and with an upward peripheral, seeing or sensing sky - black or blue - is more appealing to me than roof truss and teflon coated fiberglass.
