Where does Mario rank among all NFL DEs?

At this point in the season where do you think Mario ranks as an overall player among all NFL DEs?

Remember, this is just for this season only and guys like Peppers and Taylor are having subpar seasons while Freeney is out for the year so you might as well throw them out of the equation.

I think Mario is somewhere in the top 5-10 range and still climbing behind guys like Jared Allen, Aaron Kampmann, and both Giants DEs. I think that he is playing like one of the best DEs in the league right now, not only is he pressuring the qb but he is proving to be a rock against the run so far. There was only one play that stuck out where they broke off a long run on his side today and that may have been because of the way the DL was supposed to play on that play (I think Mario cracked down on the tackle and the other DL did too, like all of them shot into their left gap and Graham ran right off the tackles back on that play).

It's hard to say. I'd say a handful of DEs can pass rush better than Mario, but they won't do half as much as far as run defense.

Tough. It's obvious that the whole of the Texans defensive line can be very inconsistent at times, which I think is due mostly to the lack of experience on the lines.

I think pretty much for this season, you have to say that Mario is improving. He seems to be really complete, with being good against both the run and the pass. I think that players like Merriman and Wimbley being considered "LB's" rather than DE's, it helps Williams in being considered the best in his position.

In the AFC, hmmm, Jared Allen is probably considered better than Williams, but I have yet to see him play in a game.

Elvis Dumervile is also having a great year, again, I haven't seen him play, but I will get the chance on Thursday.

After that you pretty much have to say "Mario" in the AFC, but Kyle Vanden Bosch is right there on his heels, and a lot of Titans fans would probably say that he is better than Mario, but they are smoking rock.

Rest of the NFL, you have to say that Kapmann, Kerney, Cole, KGB, and Umenyiora along with the already listed AFC DE's.

Top 10, definitely not top 5, but a prospect that looks to be growing well.

I still love Mario, and I think he's going to get snubbed for the Pro Bowl this year because Dumervil put up a huge game today, and the voting ends Tuesday.

But yeah, he's really putting up great numbers, and performances this year, and looks to be a real force coming soon.

According to NFL.com, among DE's only, he is tied for 11th in the NFL in tackles (46) and 6th in the AFC. Also he is tied for 7th in the NFL in sacks (9.5) and 3rd in the AFC. He is tied for 20th in the NFL in forced fumbles (2) and tied for 8th in the AFC. He is one of 6 DE's in the NFL to score a TD and one of only 2 AFC DE's to score a TD this year.

Well on his way to living up to his draft position.

I thought it took 3+ years for DEs to develop... :d: Imagine what he'll be in '08 and beyond.

I think he's up there in top 10-15 and there's plenty of room for improvement. Hopefully he can continue to play great ball and help us to a couple of more victories.

He made the play at the end of the game that sealed an improbable victory. That's what your superstars are supposed to do isn't it ? Make a big play at the correct time ? With his potential, I wouldn't trade the guy for anyone in the league or four very high draft picks. Just me, I think he has only scratched the surface of how good he's going to be.

Mario is a far more superior DE than Dumerville and Cole. While both guys are good pass rushers - they very average in the run game.

I'm not sure but I think I'd put him ahead of Anthony Weaver!

I think it's about more than stats , it's about when the OCs game plan for the Texans ... Mario is their top concern .

I think Mario is a top 10 DE . I suspect he'll be moving up the next few games .

Mario is now reacting instead of thinking . They did a stunt on the Cochran sack where Mario did'nt take a long looping path ... he cut it tight and I think the guard doubled on him and let Earl free .

I think Mario's next step will be getting the sack even when he's being held .

This year he's just outside of the top 5.... barely. The stats TB posted include LB's, but if you look @ his body of work this year only 5 other DE's are producing at or better than he is: It's funny b/c Umenyiora got 6 sacks in 1 game & that's pretty much the only reason he's up where he's at.

kerney, Umenyiora, Kampman, Allen, Dumervil & Cole.

He's the 1st in that 2nd tier but he's also the youngest of all of these guys by a mile.

Plus, I was quoting those stats, with tongue planted firmly in-cheek!! It was more for those haters that would always try to compare offensive stats versus what Mario was doing...

I've been a Mario supporter since day one.

Mario is 16th in total tackles and 9th in sacks among DE. I'd say that's pretty good for a 2nd year player.

My favorite DE are Patrick Karney with Seattle and Kyle Vanden Bosch with Tenn. Both guys have huge motors, which Mario lacks. But neither are the physical specimans like Mario.

Mario still has a huge upside to him.

I'd have to say Mario is a top 15 DE and maybe even a top 10. Top 5 would be pushing it right now, but isn't out of the range of possibilities next year.
