The Steelers have a national following and they travel well. You always see a ton of Steeler fans at TV games even though it's an "away" game for them.

Same for Packers. It's just the way it is.

Like he said, it's just his opinion. BUT, no way would I rank the Steelers above GB! Pack fans are like packrats, they pack up and go with their team. There were so many here last year I thought, for a nanosecond, that they would outnumber the Texans! They were EVERYWHERE! Fiercely loyal fans.

I didn't care to much for him placing the blame on the Oilers move on the fans. That's not true! The "worst owner" title should go to Bud Adams, the only reason the team now resides in Tenn. THANK GOODNESS!!! :jumpbanan

Did you ever go to an Oiler/Steeler game at the dome? Wow... they have tons of fans. The last game here in Houston, I thought they had the home field advantage.lol :howdy:

I don't know if this is any barometer of fan loyalty but listening to the various 610 open line segments there are always a ton of Steeler fans that call.

always looks like steelers have alot of fans cause of their "terrible towels" making the whole stadium yellow..rofl..they need to hand out towels for us!!!!!

Somebody has to got to be waving those towels so if it looks like there is a stadium full of yellow it's because there is.

I don't like the Steelers team but I've heard their fans are first class.

I moved here in 92...and sadly enough, I never saw the Steelers/Oilers play each other.

But I can understand, after watching the highlights of the Cowboys/Steelers game and the Jags/Steelers game...those people travel in packs.
Almost like a Phish concert...minus the helium tanks.

haha we are pretty low on the rankings there ??? i thought we had a pretty good fan base (even though we've only existed 3 years)

I think the ranking is totally due to the Texans being the newest team.

Seattle at #30....doesn't surprise me at all (the playoff game against the Rams barely sold out).

4. Dallas: In the city itself, these guys and girls are shameless front runners. There were non-sellouts during the Campo and Gailey regimes -- unacceptable, no matter how bad those guys were. But the Cowboy diehards around the country that have loved the team since Staubach and yet NEVER lived there, are smart and up to date on stuff. Even though some will act like rooting for the team since Aikman qualifies as a long time. I hate to admit it, but the Cowboys truly are "America's Team."
That's gonna sting some folks 'round here. :D

I remember when I was going to TCU in 98' and I bought Monday Night Football tickets (Eagles game when the holder dropped the snap and the Cowboys won at the very end) the day before the game through ticketmaster. Now the key words there was "the day before the game".

There is no way in hell a Monday Night game would be available through ticketmaster the day before the game here in Houston.

I believe that the author was just looking for knee jerk reactions. Why else would he put Cheeseheads behind Steelers? Makes no sense. :thud:

I have ranted over our position on this "piece" in enemy terretory. Why? Because I saw it there first, but more because of 3 little words....."so I'm told". The reject couldn't even see with his own eyes before judging our fanbase. What a hack, pull that press pass because this guy stinks. Get a real job pal. :loser

He got a reaction all right......
I just ignore Dallas. :howdy:

True story: I worked in the Pittsburgh area in the last few years and one of
the guys I worked with actually changed his wedding plans so he could arrange to finance the purchase of a new special edition Steelers Ford pickup (the large version - F250 I think?), that had just come out - Yellow & Black, Steelers logos on the truck, etc.
Needles to say, I can understand why the Steelers rank #1 in fan support.

Yeah, you just had to spend $100 in groceries at your local Kroger's and they'd give you Oilers' tickets.

Don't pretend as if Houston teams have sold out on a regular basis. I remember all too often the number of times the blackouts would be lifted after a local business stepped up and bought the remaining tickets.

Dallas fans fickle? Absolutely. Houston fans the ones to be pointing this out? Absolutely not.

I fall into the "fickle" fan category. I lose faith in sports teams very quickly for periods of time although I've never been a fan of a team and just dropped them forever. Hard habit to break.

I have no problem with the Steelers fans at # 1.I have been to a few Steelers games and their fans are crazy, and always own about half the other teams stadium.

Warning to readers: If you are truly a loyal and die-hard Texans fan, i.e., most anyone on a football message board during the offseason, this is not aimed at you.

My first Oilers game was in 1976 and I've attended every NFL game in this city (except for one) since 1978. A 20 ranking sounds about right -- I may have even rated us a little lower.

There are positive signs around but seeing so many season ticket holders sell out (literally) to Packers fans for the Sunday Night game just to make a buck -- disgusted me. There were thousands of Packers fans in prime Texans PSL seats. How did they get them? The four next to me bought theirs from a Texans season ticket holder who wanted to make a buck on eBay. Passionate and loyal fans don't do that IMO. Casual, fair weather, entertain-me fans do.

Then there's the Texans terrible performance on the field against the Browns which was surpassed only by the fickle, fair weather, and classless performance in the stands that day. Cheer 'em when they're up - kick 'em when they're down. That's our rep., like it or not.

But smacking your own is "NFL normal" and GB, Philly, NYJ, and Pittsburgh slam their own on a regular basis - but there's a difference between them and us: they keep coming back week after week because of the undying passion and loyalty that's part of their persona. We sell our tickets to opponent's fans to make a few $$ on a high demand game, or we do something else on Sunday until they start winning again. Now that the honeymoon is over, wait and see what happens in the stands this year if another sub-500 season comes our way. We are Atlanta.

As far as great fan bases, when your team's fans start showing up en masse for road games, that's when you know you've arrived. I've only been to three roadies in three seasons (New Orleans, Nashville, and Denver) but based on that, all I can say is we have a long long way to go.

I witnessed a lot of Oliers-Steelers games over the years and the Steelers Packers at #1-#2 seems right on to me. There will be as many Steelers fans in Reliant in '05 as we had Packers in '04, primarily because a lot of them already live here and they will gobble up the Ticketmaster share, and secondly because of paragraph three above.

Miami and Dallas at 3 and 4 is a bit generous. I think the Eagles (yes the ones that boo Santa Claus) and Jets fans need to be in the top five. Neither team has done anything in decades (won a championship) but few teams have more loyal fans across the board than they do. As far as the Cowboys, a large fan base doesn't necessarily mean a 'great' fan base IMO. Whether they like to admit it or not, their following consists a lot of the same fair weather/bandwagon stuff we've seen in Houston and a lot of other places over the years. The only difference is their weather has been fair a lot more than ours.

This (my rant and the author's) is all very subjective stuff and designed to inspire debate because there is obviously no right or wrong to any of this.

Both AJ. and Huge have hit it right on the head. I too remember blackouts being lifted after a buyout for the Oiler games. I often said that the Houston fans were all fair weather fans. Afterall, we always had a Dome to go to with perfect weather. Steeler and GB fans dressed for the occassion. Obviously, I'm a live and die Houston fan. I live in California and wear my Texan, Astros and Rocket gear all of the time. Being out here, I don't get to see too many of the games. I rely on these message boards for most of my information.
This kind of keeps me living in Houston until I can move back home. :texanprid

My Wife is from Pittsburgh and I have spent alot of time there. You can go to about any local bar and ask if they have room left on their steelers trips, They go by the busloads and have several companies that support these bus trips each year. They book entire hotels and have other local events planned. These guys have it down. Would be nice to see that kind of out of town support for the Texans. Hell, I live in Boston now and found a nice place to watch the games, wearing texans gear got me some talk in the beggining but by the end of the season they were reserving my table by the "Texans TV". It's not easy being a Texans fan when the Pats bandwagon rolls right through my block, I just try to remind these Pats bandwagoners about their team in the early 90's.
